Re: ***Official PSP Post-Release Discussion and Review Thread Thread***
Demo disc collectors may be interested in knowing that Circuit City will be offering a
Loco Roco demo disc with the purchase of any PSP game beginning this Sunday (August 13).
I think I'll be holding off on a PSP firmware upgrade for now. As a homebrew user, the following excerpt from a PSP-Vault column has me somewhat concerned:
Quote:
It should also be noted that as of firmware 2.80, your PSP can also send its firmware version:
This has some important implications. First of all, and I hope this doesn't sound alarmist, but it means that any web developer can obtain specific information about how you reached their website. Someone with expertise could tell what firmware version, what application, and what region's PSP their users are using to access their site. Invasion of privacy? I don't know. But with this development, it would also be possible for Sony to restrict access to certain webpages if the user's PSP is not the latest firmware version. When you think about this, it's a big problem for homebrew users -- let's say someone wants to put out some new downloadable content for Wipeout Pure. This game was a launch title; it only requires PSP firmware version 1.50. What if they made it such that you couldn't access the webpage unless you had firmware version 2.80? You'd have to update to the latest firmware version to download the content, or download the content from somewhere else. If this is combined with the "unique PSP" technology rumored to restrict users from sharing save games in Tekken: Dark Resurrection, users wouldn't be able to simply share downloaded content with others -- they would have to download it themselves. |
Of course, if I had a second PSP, this would be moot.
