Tabitha - Page 2

That "Friends" was a one-hour comedy / drama about a bunch of school kids, one of whom was played by Jill Whelan. The show was so awful I think even Aaron Spelling would rather forget it. But Aaron must have liked Jill: She got cast on the The Love Boat as Vicki Stubing immediately after Friends was soon cancelled.
Yeah but do you remember the opening theme song? :p)

Nope, because it's as forgettable to most people as the rest of the show.
In 1979 Friends aired on ABC on Sunday nights at 7. It was rightfully massacred in the ratings by the CBS powerhouse 60 Minutes.

Thank you. It's too bad that Elizabeth was not involved especially since the show is a spin-off.

There is a section in Herbie J Pilato's "Bewitched Forever" that talks about "Tabitha". He had asked Elizabeth Montgomery about it. This is what he had to say about her involvement with the series.

Quote:
Elizabeth, who had "absolutely zero to do with the show," used to receive mail from people who were outraged that Erin and Diane Murphy were not involved with it. As she recalled, the letters would say, "What....is going on here? Tabitha is in her twenties! This doesn't make any sense!" And she responded "to each and every person who was looking for an answer." She said, "I felt an obligation to them. They were annoyed and felt betrayed."

Herbie J goes on to say that Sol Saks, the creator of BW, was asked by William Asher, a director on both shows, to come work on the show but he had different ideas for "Tabitha" and didn't like how they were trying "to do BW without Samantha and the original cast."

I would've LOVED to have seen EM reprise Samantha on the show but I think that her choosing to distance herself from it was a better choice as she maintained her credibility.

On another subject I would like it if the Saturday morning cartoon special called "Tabitha and Adam and the Clown Family" was included as an extra on the "Tabitha" DVD.

"I felt an obligation to them. They were annoyed and felt betrayed."

I like "Tabitha" only because of Lisa, but I applaud EM for taking that position. In a similar vein, Richard Hatch could have done well to learn from her!

I dont know what is scarier, the thought that they are releasing this show or that I still remember some of the theme song.

"Some people got it and some people dont"....

That song does stick in your head! LOL

Here are the words from Lisa Hartman Black's website:

It Could Be Magic (Jeff Barry) (opening theme from "Tabitha") :37
Some people got it
Some people don't
You'll never know
Until you try
You never know
Baby you can fly
If you try
It could be magic
The way I feel
It could be magic
But it feels so real
It could be magic
Ooh yeah
Well it could be magic
It could be magic

You can also listen to it on her site too.

Another thing about her website...the news of the Tabitha DVD wasn't anywhere on there so I emailed them last week and got this reply:

Thank you for the heads up. I have contacted Lisa, and her manager, and they have not heard anything about this. We are looking into it, trust me. It would be wonderful. If we find anything for certain, we will post that news on the NEWS page on her website the second we find out. Thank you again so much for this information. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

That theme song is so 70s cheesetastic.

The Tabitha theme song is terrible. The lyrics, the melody, and the choice of singer. I'm often a fan of 70's TV theme shows but the one for Tabitha is probably the worst I've ever heard compared to say themes from Alice, Angie, Chico and the Man, Welcome Back Kotter and so on.

I think the theme is very good, much better than the show itself. Written by the great Jeff Barry (Sugar Sugar). I've always been disappointed that Lisa never included it on one of her albums.

I like the theme song too...it was perfect for the time.

I just found while looking through my TV Land tapes of "Tabitha" that there is an alternate theme song that was used on episode 2: "Tabitha's Weighty Problem". I'm assuming it was also used on the pilot, which wasn't shown on TV Land. It doesn't have any words, it's just an extended version of the incidental music that was used a lot on the show. And instead of showing clips of the cast when their name appears on the screen it just shows Tabitha driving through L.A. in her VW-convertible.

Along with a new rumour about the release of BW a new one about Tabitha came about as well. This was from RP who posted on the Bewitched website Harpies Bizarre with info she's gleaned from a contact within Sony.

I received another update on the DVD's last night:
June 21 release definite - Announcement April 5th or 12th.

...TABITHA series will be two discs. (6 episodes each, I guess)

Also, this is NOT firm by any means...Again, take with a grain of salt.

According to the Sony news release, Tabitha is being released with 13 episodes so by my count that should include the original pilot since there were only 12 Lisa Hartman episodes made. Good for them. Now if we could only get them to dig out the 2 unaired All in the Family pilots and include them at some point.

Having watched this series in 1977 when it first aired (and with no interest in ever seeing it again), I can tell you there is no lost episode...sorry!

I know that, I was just being sarcastic. Tabitha's rapid aging is just one of those things the producers hoped we wouldn't notice, like Darrin getting a foot and a half taller or Catwoman's sudden racial shift.

I would, however, love to know what Chuck Cunningham could have done that was so horrible, no one in the family ever spoke of him again...

I take the view that Chuck Cunningham, like all characters who disappear without explanation from TV shows, was transported to that unknown region in the great beyond that spirited Colonel Forbes and Colonel Harrington away in the Twilight Zone episode "And When The Sky Was Opened". (You can just see Chuck one day saying, "I feel like I don't belong here," and then vanishes and no one remembers him!)

VideoETA.com has listed a suggested retail price of $29.95 for Tabitha available on 6/21/05.

I think that price is much too high for that series. I was thinking more along the lines of $19.95, which I expect will probably be the going price at Best Buy or on Amazon.com.

Thanks for the release date into. I haven't seen it posted yet on TSoD, or did I miss this one?
TSoD posted about what Variety had reported on 3/29/05. http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=3182

Take note that David L. also said that Sony will release an official announcement next Monday, April 11 WITH cover art! I can't wait!

Thanks for the info. I remember the Apr 11'th thing but I didn't remember the earlier post.

He fell in love with and married a black girl, and this being the 1950s, the conservative family never spoke to him again (only joking, folks, though this sort of reaction wouldn't have been unusual at the time. Thank goodness those days are mostly behind us).

I do think it was a nice surprise to bring out both Chucks on that recent reunion special hosted by Garry Marshall.

The depression caused him to overeat and he put on about 100 pounds. Exiled from the family in disgrace, he moved to New York and changed his name to Tom Willis...

TSoD posted Sony's official announcement of Tabitha today...pretty much solidifying all the rumors of before but with some cool cover art!

I'm pretty excited for this but even more so for the original BW!
Ditto on the Tabitha / BW build-up Can't wait for this one!
Sony has posted the Tabitha series up for pre-order on their site and they do list the Liberty Williams/Bruce Kimmel original pilot as one of the included episodes! Awesome!
I saw that Pavan had posted a review for this release over at Sitcoms Online. It sounds excellent! Especially the part about chapter stops, play all and vibrant colors on the video.

I can't wait to read the upcoming reviews of BW!

I started watching these episodes last night. Now, I loved this show when it originally aired but I was only around 7 or 8 yrs old. Obviously my tastes back then were pretty simple because I can see why this show never made it past 12 episodes. It's awful. But I'm loving it anyway.

I can also see where fans would get upset with the continuity of the show. In the episode I watched Adam called Tabitha his "kid sister" but on "Bewitched" she was the older one. Talk about a glaring discrepancy. And from what I heard, on "Tabitha" Adam is a mortal and has no powers but on "Bewitched" he did. Actually, I always thought he didn't on "Bewitched", but that isn't true?

So what do the rest of you think about this show?
This show is not even an 1/8th as good as it's "mother" but it's still fun to watch.

I noticed that too about Adam calling Tabitha his kid sister. I guess they changed it to work more in the context of him being a protective older brother.

Adam did have powers on Bewitched. In Episode #242: "Adam, Warlock or Washout" his powers are to be tested by Enchantra and Grimalda and Endora to determine whether Samantha's mortal marriage should remain intact. Maurice, Samantha's father, finds that Adam doesn't show to be magically inclined so he endows him with some of his powers which allows Adam to fly and pop out. Later on he admits that he gave the magical assist to Adam and that he doesn't show any powers. That's where it seems people stop watching. Right after that Samantha says that maybe Adam was too scared to do witchcraft because of Darrin always getting mad about it so Darrin gives his permission and Samantha shows Adam how to levitate a seashell, which he then does on his own powers. He even zaps his mommy into the kitchen at the end of the episode.

He didn't show his powers in any episodes after that which is too bad.

But back to Tabitha, I'm glad it was released on DVD as I like that Dr. Bombay and the Kravitzes made appearances on the show.

Well, I finally got around to watching Tabitha this weekend. I remember watching it when it was originally on, and while it was memorable I can see why it didn't last that long. It's pretty mediocre. For some reason, I always remembered Adam on Bewitched as being a mortal, but I guess that is wrong.

Yeah, the whole mysterious aging of both Adam and Tabitha is rather lame, but once I just accepted it I did enjoy the show. To a point. As I said, it's pretty mediocre. There's nothing worse than an unfunny sitcom.
