Maggie update - Page 4

Hi Huys,

Well Dean,I've decided to use the Stryke/Lamba 15's.I'm planning on using 2 in a manifold with the woofers facing each other to cancel negative effects.The only thing I'm unsure of is the type of wood and thickness I'll use.It seems like mdf or ply with a hardwood inside facing seems to be the way to go.

From what I'm reading 3/4 or 5/8 thickness will do.My old house was built in 42,so I'll be cutting through plaster rather then drywall.I'm hoping the studs are at least 16" apart,but who knows what they did in 1942,lol.

"how long do you think you'll have to sleep on the porch?"

I'm using two layers of 3/4" plywood to build mine. I thought about using hardwood, but I was concerned that it might have a greater tendency to transmit vibrations to the surrounding area. The glue in plywood and MDF seems to dampen vibration a bit over hardwoods.
The only problem that I've run into so far is finding a jig for my router to cut the speaker holes. I can't seem to find one locally, so I'll probably order one from PE.

You know,now that we've brought up the question of woods.I had a thought(scary I know).

I know in jet aircraft,the smoothness of the intake and exhaust effects airflow.Roughness disrupts the flow and the limits the amount of airflow .Smooth corners are preferred so air flows more freely.I wonder if this effects soundwaves also?

Hmm,I may try sealing the manifold inside surface with a glaze.

M - Sound waves are air in motion, so there may well be something to that. However, I don't know how significant a factor it would be in our situation. Home Depot sells a two part pour-on type epoxy finish that can be applied quite thickly. It might be a relatively easy way to smooth out the inside of the manifold.
BTW, I'm looking at Ascendant Audio's Avalanche 15 for my IB. I have a very nice porch.

I guess I could just wire the porch for sound and get myself some 1.6Rs for it. If I have to sleep on the porch with the dogs, I might as well enjoy myself. Oh hell, since I'm already delusional I might as well make it 20.1s.
Have you found someone to split a set of four of the IB15s yet?

Nope,I havent found anyone to split the strykes with yet,I figured I'd either sell them on the bay or in the recycler .

Hmm,now that I think about it,2 strykes for my Ib,2 in the dog house so they can have their own subwoofer,hmm,nah.

You could just wire the IB into the front porch and when you wanted to scare the shit of someone, say the Postman or those pesky door to door candy sales people, you could put on a little low LFE at 3,000 watts.

I think I have just invented a whole new way of showing off your bass to your system.
The next step in bass reproduction.
You've heard of bass shakers.
You've heard of (but never actually heard) of near DC bass notes.
Now you don't have to dream about it.
You can actually experience it.
It's porch shakers.
Enough low end LFE to actually measure on the richter scale. (Banned in California or anywhere near a fault line).
And when you are really tired. They also work well as a large foot massager.

I was thinking of putting my PB12-Plus/2 in the trunk of my S2000 (with a really long extension cord) so that I could show all the annoying neighborhood kids what real bass sounds like.

Those side view mirrors are just waiting for a special something to make them really stand out.You could always mount some MC1's to them.Put a reflector on the top and shazzam,better mobile sound and a good safety measure all in one

Yeah, and I'd probably become airborne at ~60 MPH.

I haven't ordered anything yet, but I have finally quit waffling and made a decision (I think). I'm going with the Avalanche 15" - 2 Ohm version drivers in a single manifold (22.5" x 22.5" x 22.5") centered between my mains. I'm going to try two drivers at first and if that doesn't seem to be enough, I'll buy another pair.

What's up fellow Alans, honorary Alans, and number 6! lol

I figure I'll just post here instead of starting a new thread....

I went to demo some speakers today since I'm off from work and it's a BEAUTIFUL day here in North Georgia. I've been wanting to hear some Gallos, in addition to some other stuff. The Gallo guy didn't have the Reference 3 in, but he did have some Dues. These little things put out a very nice sized soundstage, and they were better than a lot of stuff in that price range, but where I really felt they were lacking (especially in comparison to the MMGs) was with vocals. Nowhere NEAR the same quality.

Thankfully, my preferred local guy is also the local dealer for Maggies, so I thought I'd go over and play with the 1.6s, 3.6s, and CC3. He is the same guy I bought my Paradigm Studios from a couple years ago, and he just happened to have the Signatures in the same room as the 3.6s and 20.1s. First of all, the 1.6s really are a nice step-up from the MMGs. I was very pleasantly surprised, cause I love my MMGs and really couldn't imagine them sounding THAT much better. The difference was the size of the sound and also the effortlessness with which they produced it. My dealer had a Diana Krall 5.1 DVD and it sounded awesome......amazingly natural. I really liked the MC1s in back, but I don't know if I feel compelled to upgrade my MMG-Ws any time soon. They are more than fine in back. But the 1.6s looked much cooler than I thought, and they sounded very, very nice. The 3.6s are clearly a step up, but I didnt' spend much time with them since they're probably out of my price range for the time being.

This is really the first time I've been able to compare some stuff to Maggies in the same place, and I have to say I'm now convinced that I'm a planar guy. I just can't see myself going back to a box. I'm 99% convinced that I'll have 1.6s in my HT within the next 30-60 days.

Anyway, just wanted to share my day with you guys......

Congrats Z,
The 1.6's are a great speaker.I listened to them last week at my local dealer.I think you'll be a very happy camper.


On a side note,talked to an old friend last week also,he has a set of old Maggies(about 1989 vintage).I think they are along the lines of the (look like)3.6's(different model number).He told me they are sitting in the garage and he hasnt used them in years.He also said he doesnt think they are worth much(lol).I may go over there in the next week or two and make him an offer

Yep, I was actually quite pleased with the CC3. It's a great center! It wasn't QUITE as good off-axis as I thought, which was the main reason I was interested in it. If I had a larger room that would allow the listening position to be further away (and subsequently the Maggies to be further apart) I'd invest in a CC3 in a heartbeat. But it's definitely worthy of all the praise it's gotten from reviewers. The biggest thing for me was the fact that I wasn't drawn to the Paradigm Signatures at all.....if you'd have told me before I went into the store that there wouldn't be ANY aspect of them that would appeal to me over the Maggies, I'd have bet you otherwise. Part of me honestly thought that maybe with a very dynamic film that I'd long for a 'box' instead. The Signature 4s are great speakers that look very nice......but to my ears and for my money, I'll take the 1.6s

'M': You'll definitely have to keep us updated on THAT lol. I hear stories all the time of people who find older gems that their owners just don't realize are really good pieces of gear. You may have a real find there! Who knows, maybe you can even send them back to Magnepan for a refurbishing on the cheap and end up with a nice little upgrade!

Z, I like the CC3 so much that I've thought about using six of them in a 6.1 set-up. They seem to work well in my room - my L&Rs are only ~7.5' apart, but seating position is ~14' away. The CC3 casts a wide field at that distance. It's far from an optimal arrangement, but it's the best I can do with the room without building an addition on the house... Hmmmm....

Dean: I had a similar thought as you, but was going to use three or four of them as my surrounds. The only problem (for me) is that they are a grand a pop. I did see that one reviewer use all CC3s though, and he seemed pretty pleased with it. It's definitely a solid addition to the Maggie family, with plenty of placement options. Since I would just be using them for surrounds, though, it's hard for me to justify that when I can get Ws for $299 a pair. I would probably feel differently if I was more into multi-channel music, though.

If you start going nuts with the CC3s, I expect pics and feedback, bro!

You can be sure that I'll be bragging if I get four more CC3s. I already told "The Boss" that I would like some more, and she said that I really need to get a Behringer Feedback Destroyer first. At least I think that's what she said, she mumbled something about a BFD.

I think I have some sort of disorder.....I keep laughing to myself about the mental images I'm getting of Parker after the whole Rod Stewart and Number 6 things lol......I can't seem to stop.

Number 6 (that would be 'numero seis' for our Spanish speaking friends.....though I think El Numero Seis sounds funnier ), did you ever tell us what kind of gear you are currently running at home?

EDIT: I just went back through the thread and saw you mentioned the Outlaw gear (nice amp, by the way).....what are you running for speakers and sub?

I hate to disappoint all here but I am only running Def Tech BP20s, CLR 1000 and BPX2s for speakers. I do have an Outlaw 950 with the 770 Power Amp. I have a custom SV Subwoofer (Ron and I have the only two) that is a CS model with a 400 watt amp built in, tri-port and high output sub.
I don't have the sub turned on though as it scares my 4 year old and my wife would just tell me to turn it down until I couldn't hear or feel it anymore anyway. It just acts as my monolith in the corner of my room.

Speaking of monolith. Wouldn't it be cool to have a sub that has 4 12's that is in a vertical alignment with ports running between each sub. Make it about 6 foot tall and put a 1,000 watt amp in it.

Before I bought Maggies Parker,I would have killed for that system.

6 - Doesn't Martin Logan make a sub very similar to that idea, or used to make one?

I pulled up all the carpet and pad in my living/HT room yesterday. Wow, what a difference in sound (the house is on a concrete slab). I loved my Maggies before, but they sound even better now. The carpet is being replaced with genuine simulated wood, which shouldn't impact the "new" sound too much, I hope.
Since I'm remodeling the room anyway, is there anything available for treating all the walls in the room relatively easily that works well and doesn't cost a fortune?

I think that they made (make) one too. I just thought it would be cool to make one in lieu of an IB and set this puppy in the corner of the room, maggies on the outer perimeter, center and surrounds. The standing wave in the room would be so palatable each time the LFE (such as from Das Boot) hit near 20 that if you were standing it would blow you back in your chair. (Think Mike Fox in Back to the Future).

Nice!

My real thoughts were to get a near as possible to the experience of sitting front row with a Philharmonic playing Beethoven's 9th. Can't you just hear the tympani? Have your favorite chair setting in the middle being surrounded by your maggies and the monolith corner loaded. I swear I can hear the conductor move his wand.

Heh. I can dream can't I.
