Maggie update - Page 14

Patrick, I live about fifty miles Northwest of Orlando in a little town called Fruitland Park.

Z, $1600 for a pair of 1.6s? Where are you pricing them? I haven't found a dealer here who is willing to discount the $1725 MSRP. I guess I'm going to have to go to work a little more forcefully on the dealer that I bought my MC1s and CC3s from if I can get out from under having to pay full list price.

Dean,

I spent several hours several weeks ago at my local dealer listening to the 3.6s. I can easily see myself moving up to them someday!!

To All,

I am still having trouble with my Marsh A400s amp wanting to clip if I turn my Marsh P2000t preamp up past 11:00 on the volume control. I have been doing some research and now am thinking that there may be an input sensitivity issue between my preamp and amp. Here are the spec for both units:

A400S Stereo Power Amp
Power output at 1 kHz: 200 watts x 2 at 8 ohms; 330 watts x 2 at 4 ohms
Frequency response, 20-20000 Hz: +0/- 0.2 dB at 1 watt to 200 watts output into 8 ohms loads, -1 dB at 80 kHz
THD+ noise at maximum output: <0.02% from 20 Hz to 20 kHz into 8 ohms loads (<0.01% at 1 kHz)
Slew rate: 40 V / uS
S/N ratio, A-weighted (ref. 200 watts): >110 dB
Input sensitivity for 200 watts at 8 ohms load: 1.4 Vrms for unbalanced and balanced input mode
Input impedance: 56 k ohms unbalanced, 4 k ohms, balanced input
Input power: AC 110-120 V 60 Hz
Power consumption: 900 watts max.
Size: 19" wide, 18.25" deep, 7.125" high
Weight: 45 lbs
Shipping weight: 54 lbs.

P2000T Tube Hybrid Preamplifier
Frequency response (20 - 20,000 Hz): +/- 0.1 dB
THD plus noise (1 Vrms, 20 - 20,000 Hz): <0.05%
Input impedance: 50 k Ohms
Maximum gain: 23 dB
Signal-to-noise ratio ('A weighted'): 90 dB
Maximum output (1 kHz): 8 Vrms
Crosstalk (1 kHz): -90 dB
Crosstalk (10 kHz): -90 dB
Power consumption: 30 W
Dimensions: 19" wide, 4.5" high, 13" deep
Weight: 13 lbs.
Shipping weight: 16 lbs.

Several months ago, Audio Advisor was selling these 2 units in a package deal. I can't believe that AA would sell or Marsh would design 2 units that are not compatable!

I have read that these may solve or reduce my problem:
http://www.rothwellaudioproducts.co....tenuators.html

I am really grasping for any help that I can get. I know it is asking a lot from you guys, but if any of you have advice or input on this subject, it would be greatly appreciated!!

Peter Thank you

Can all Mags be wall mounted without affecting the sound?
Scott, From what I understand, only the Maggies that are specifically designed for wall mounting should be mounted to the wall. I haven't tried it quite yet, but I suspect that the sound of the wall-mount speakers can be greatly improved by placing them on floor mounted stands and away from the walls. I'll be doing some experimentation with floor mounting my MC1s this week to prove/disprove my hypothesis. (It almost sounds like I know what I'm talking about, doesn't it. )
In my smallish HT the balance between real estate and perfromance is always a challenge. From the looks of their site it looks as if the smaller ones are the only ones that can be placed against the wall.

Please keep me posted on the results
Dean-O: Try offering to pay for them in cash and see what happens Besides, I've also spent some green with my dealer in the past (Denon 2900, Paradigm Studio 100s, 20s), so he always gives me a small break on stuff.
Z, I pay for all of my toys with cash. I'm trying as hard as I can to behave myself with the credit cards as I could get into serious trouble with this HT stuff.
I'll lean on my dealer this week and see what he says.
P:

Good question. You would think that the two of them would work well together. Have you written to Marsh to say what they say?

What about your idea of using your 950 as the preamp? What about getting a 990 and using it as your preamp?

6,

I've been doing some more research and discovered that these Input Sensitivities are fairly normal for this type of gear. So I got my SPL meter out to do some checking...hell, I can crank it up to near 95 dB with peaks higher than that without it clipping. I guess I can live with that!! I must have really been cranking it when it started to show signs of clipping. I have been playing CDs all day while I am at work and the Marsh preamp and amp are sounding better and better!! I'm keeping them.

I have also added several fake ficus trees placed behind the 1.6s for difusion. Took the edge off of the very high notes and seemed to make the sound stage more solid. As good as these 1.6s are sounding, it may be a while before I jump over to 3.6s!!

Now I have to sell my Earthquake Cinenova Grande 5 channel beast of an amp. It is a great HT amp, but not as good as the Marsh for 2 channel music. Much the same as the Outlaw 950 was a great HT pre/pro, but not as good as the Marsh hybrid tube preamp is for 2 channel music!!

Guys:

RAF was at the HT Expo and said Outlaw had a room setup that showed off the 990. He said that it is a killer preamp. He currently owns a Lexicon MC-8 and said that if the 990 was available at the time he bought his Lexi that he would have probably gone with the 990.

Knowing Dr. Fowkes as well as I do when he says a pre/pro is that good I believe him.

I may trading my 950 in for the 990 at some point in the not too distant future.

P:

Sounds like a killer set up to me. I am glad you are liking the tube amps more and more each day. I still say that tubes give you something that a solid state amp can't. This is very subjective to the listener but to me tubes are more dynamic.

6, That's very encouraging news on the 990. I've been expecting the 990 to be good, but not that good. I feel better about ordering one without having the opportunity to hear one.

I got my MC1 stands finished and installed this morning. The improvement in SQ was immediate. The speakers sound much fuller and less flat than they did mounted to the wall.
No pictures yet as my fiancee is in Houston on business, and she has the camera. I'll post a pic when she returns.
I decided to do these on the cheap since I'm planning on ugrading anyway. So, instead of using oak as I usually do, I made them from 2"x2" Douglas fir. It cost me $17.83 and a couple of hours of labor. It's probably the cheapest HT mod I've ever done. Next on the list is some DIY Owens-Corning 703 acoustical panels from http://www.insulationworld.com/

Thats great news 6,
the 990 is on my short list of upgrades. The new harmony 880 color remote is another on the list.

My IB sub is finally finished. After calibrating it,I watched the incredibles again on saturday night to give it a test run. With its 2 15" strykes,it was extremely quick with no roll on.I think this is the quickest sub I've yet heard. This IB was a very nice upgrade to my HT.
On a sidenote,my brother in law stopped by and gave me a 22" subwoofer(driver) he found somewhere(wont tell me where, think he recieved it from one of his clients). There are no markings on it other then a serial number. Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do with it .

Nice tweak on the stands Dean, your the man

Z, Adios amoeba to you too.
(The only Spanish I know.)

M, I'm happy to hear that you like your IB. When are you going to add the other two drivers?

Z,
hmm,its spanish and nope dont speakie it

Photos will be up after my business trip ends next week.

Dean,
before I install the other 2 strykes,I was thinking of hooking up this 22" to see what it does.Ok,now I've scared myself, lol.
We have created IB monsters.
I am happy.

If any of you are setting on the fence about getting a front projector I may have the steal of the century coming to HTF soon.

M, I would try to find out the specs on the 22" to see if it's suitable for an IB before going through all the trouble to install it. It sure would be scary if it'll work well though.

6, No fence-sitting here, Getting the TV out of the livingroom and having a seven foot screen would be great, but I have the wrong house for it. There's no way to accommodate a projector for day time viewing without making my livingroom into a cave. I don't think that I can talk the boss into moving so I can have a projector. Even I'm not that good.
Adios ameoba? LOL

Hey, I just had a totally cool Maggie Moment.....Down here in the ATL, we have a high def channel called 'Bravesvision' that broadcasts Braves home games in HD and 5.1 DD. I'm sitting here watching the Braves getting pounded by the Marlins, and all of a sudden I hear this man's voice that I could SWEAR was someone coming through the patio door down here. Turns out it was the friggin peanut vendor at the stadium lol. I've never heard the Ws in back throw an effect that wide before.....it sounded like the guy was coming in from the other room.....very, very cool

6: I'd love to hear what kind of deal you are able to procure regarding the projector.....a really good deal on one of those may offset the absolute NAUSEA I get whenever I see those new orange aaaa-HSU!! (gedzunheit!) banners you guys are sportin You're probably going to have some killer deal that I'm not going to be able to jump on, though, cause I'm definitely going to need a projector w/ horizontal lens shift. As of now the Panny AE700 and Sanyo Z3 are on my short list.....I'm keen on a 720p unit, too, since I'm a HD watcher I'm a good month or two away from purchasing though. I want to get a fixed screen instead of a pull-down, and I'm still trying to figure out how big it can be w/out the Maggies blocking the view of people sitting on the sides.

Hey M.....Is that IB kicking your behind then, or what? lol

Thanks 6,

Just when I thought it was safe to get in the water again, you tell us about a deal on a PJ.

"Hey M.....Is that IB kicking your behind then, or what? lol"

Z & Dean,

I'll explain it this way,

My wife has a blown glass ball( about 2 inch diameter) that hangs from the ceiling in the corner.Everytime the IB really kicks in,that ornament spins like a whirling dervish

P.S. there is no name or anything else for me to follow up as a clue to the specs on this 22".i might take it down to speaker city to see if they know anything about it.Other then that, hooking it up is my only other option. If it blows,no loss,if it works correctly,my neighbors will know, lol.

Just hit is with a spot light, put on Disco Inferno and you have an instant dance hall.

Let me put it this way on the projector. Here are some of its stats.

It is rated at 1100 ANSI lumens and 2200:1 contrast. It features a 5x speed, seven segment color wheel. The unit weighs 9.5 lbs.

The connection panel on the rear of the unit offers a wide variety of input options including an M1-DA port, a 15-pin VGA, two sets of three RCA component jacks, two S-video ports, a composite jack, and a D5 video input. There are also two 12-volt triggers to control other features such as lighting, drapes, and screen deployment.

It has a signal compatibility including DVI-HDCP, component and RGB HDTV 1080p, 1080i, 720p, EDTV component 576p, 480p, standard component video 480i, 576i, S-video and composite. Color systems include NTSC, NTSC 4.43, PAL B, G, H, I, M, and N, and SECAM. Computer compatibility includes digital and analog PC and Macintosh up to SXGA 1280x1024.

It has a manual 1.38x zoom and focus lens. It throws a 100" diagonal 16:9 format image from a distance range of about 11 to 15 feet.

It retails for $8,999 and the deal we are going to be able to offer it for will be less than $3,000.

The deal isn't set in stone yet but I wanted to give you a heads up. This is all I can say about it now but we should be putting something up on the main forum announcements soon with all the details.

How is your IB doing with music? Is it blending well with your Maggies?
Thread Starter
Hi Dean,

yes,its blending much better then I expected. The 8" sub I was using was quick I thought.Until the IB was working,I never realized how much roll on I was experiencing..With the IB I'm hearing precise bass that blends but doesnt cover any of the Maggies output.
I'm really pleased with the result of the project.
M, So, when are you going to add some larger Maggies?

I'm running out of things to do to my system, so I've decided to start shopping around for a used pair of 1.6s or possibly 2.6s, and sell a pair of my MC1s.

Not for a while Dean.I'm really pleased with the way my system has come together.I've odered the Outlaw 990 and am waiting for it ,and I'm also going to buy the new Harmany 880 color screen uni remote. That should hold me for a short period.

Of course there is that PJ I'm looking at

You two are as bad as me.
I was going to order the 990, but I just got the estimate for a new roof on my house - $13K. Ouch!
Is the roof the reason why you're going with used 1.6s, Dean-O? I'm sort of in a similar boat in that my car is in the shop.....If their guess is right, it's going to delay my projector fun by at least a few weeks. But I'll get it sooner or later!
Z, it's the only way to have my cake and eat it too if I want to get them anytime soon. I've been looking around and there seems to be some good deals on the 1.6s fairly often. If I can't find the color and trim combination I want, the socks and trim look like they can be swapped out easily.
