Maggie update - Page 13

P, I know nothing about tubes, but I suppose it could be a possibility. I would still check out the amps with the dedicated circuit after swapping out the pre-amp for the your receiver. The circuit itself is the most obvious potential problem, and you're planning on installing it anyway. Depending on the load requirements of your receiver, it may or may not tell you if it's a problem with the load, or with a bad tube.

Back when I was in the nav(67 to 70),we still used square riggers and were served rum everyday

I remember that! The worst part was having to field strip a saber while under cannon fire. I'm glad those days are over for me, but I sort of miss my eye patch and parrot.

Dean-O: I have spent some time lately figuring out if I could get a front projector to work in my room.....turns out there are some projectors that have this 'lens shift' feature that allows you to project the image from an off-center location. Basically that means that I could definitely make one work in this room......why am I telling you this? Cause I blame YOU for putting this idea in my head!!! lol Actually, a large part of it is that I'm so content with how the audio sounds right now, I can comfortably consider other upgrade options. I honestly didn't know you could get a projector of good quality for under 2k....I pretty much knew nothing about them. So, I think I'm going to move my upgrade to the 1.6s into second position and focus on a projector. The thought of having films and HD sports on a 100" screen is getting the better of me....
You aliens sure are a fickle bunch.
I wish you luck with the projector. Position wasn't a problem for me, it was the amount of light in the room. I wanted it to replace the TV in the livingroom, but it's not to be I guess.
I'm going to audition the 1.6s tomorrow. I'm driving my S2000, so I guess there's not much chance that I'll be driving home with them.
Dean: S2000, huh? Nice!! What color is it?
You'd definitely probably have some issues trying to get the 1.6s home in that.....though you could use them as wings and go James Bond style As for the projector, I have to blame '6' for a large part of it, too....he's been encouraging me in one of the projector threads lol.

Z, The car is Silverstone. I didn't want one of the brightly colored ones that would attract too much attention on the road, if you know what I mean.
Dean they do make a 30 amp 120v receptacle but you will not be able to plug a regular plug into it. Here is a chart that has lots of different plug and receptacle info. The one you are talking about is 5-30R or in code terms straight blade 3wire 30 amp 125volt receptacle.
www.leviton.com/sections/techsupp/nema.htm

I hope that does not confuse the issue.

Pat
Dean So yes you can install a 30 amp 125volt outlet but you need a special cord to go along with it and it has to be dedicated to that item only. In other words it can only have one receptacle per breaker I believe. Again I was going to be completely sure today but my electrician buddies at work were off today.

I hope I have thoughly confused everyone now including myself.

Pat
Thanks again Patrick. That wasn't confusing at all, even for an old fart like me.
Pat,

I did 14 years and was discharged due to a blown out disk in the cervical spine area C6-C7.

Nav ET on the T-hulls but picked up the fast boat ET NECs but never did get to a fast boat.
Nothing better then a moon lit night on the surface and having to go to the bridge to work on the radar mast. Translation hanging out in the bridge enjoying the fresh air, listening to the wayter break off the the sonar dome while watching the shadows of the dolphins jumping off the wake.

I have great pleasure of working with some old shipmates. Its kind weird at times. When we get together the sub lingo and trash talk comes out.

Glad to see you here. Thanks for the 9 years in serving in the Silent Service.

For all you Maggie and Outlaw fans, are any of you familar with this company that mods the M200s? http://www.underwoodhifi.com/mod_outlaw.html
I'm wondering if it's worth the money and effort as opposed to buying a higher end amp. Any opinions?
Scott,

Yeah those night time topside liberty cruises were great weren't they. We had our FC go down one night and it was calm seas and my MPA had the bridge and he gave me a "checkout" up there for about two hours. It was spectacular. We were in the caribbean at the time. Did you ever do any swim calls out at sea? I'm thinking not since you were on a boomer.

Thankyou also for your 14years of service.

I work with a bunch of Ex-Navy guys, but most were Target sailors. But there is one ex-nuc MM in the bunch. We can get real bad sometimes.

Patrick:

I knew that you couldn't have more that a 20 amp line but I was using 30 amp as an example. I should have compared 20 to 15.

Dean:

You want to go back to school to become a Focker so you aren't just setting around the house? Believe me. You want to be setting around the house instead.

BTW, my minor was Psych.

Z:

Believe it or not I haven't seen the first Focker movie. I should get ahold of a copy and watch it some time. Been a tad busy and haven't been able to watch as much lately. Actually I have worked on a Telemetry floor with all the post op CABG, AICD placements, pacemaker, post cardiac cath, PTCA, stents, etc. and all the respiratory complications you can imagine except CA. I was a CCRN for awhile but never worked the units as I liked being able to talk to my patients instead of a machine.

If you are thinking of changing areas to work in look into your stepdown units with Telemetry. It is never a dull moment.

M:

That's ok. Its another medical field.

I just think it is really Twilite Zoneish that we all all in this thread with similar backgrounds in medicine and have the same affinity towards speakers, amps, preamps, music taste, etc.

Now if any of you are married to a woman named Susan and have a daughter named Sharon then this will get really really creepy.

6, I wasn't seriously considering it, the subject of me going to vet school also came up (I already have more damned degrees than any normal person would ever need or want in a lifetime ). I'm just looking for a change of pace and something to do for twenty or thirty hours a week. However, I think I may have anal glaucoma - I can't see my ass going back to work or school full time.
Dean: That sounds like one sweet car, man!

6: I didn't minor in psych, but I do have a prior degree in it lol. I worked as a crisis counselor for Charter Hospitals for a was offered a pretty attractive deal to stay in school and complete a combined MA/PhD, but I just didn't see as stong or stable of a future as I'd hoped. As for the Fockering, I worked on a high-acuity, fast paced telemetry floor for the first two years after graduating from Emory down here in Atlanta. When I left there my supervisor said, 'You'll miss it, AJ. You may feel like you need a break, but as tough as this floor is you won't find anything else as interesting or challenging'. Well, it's been about 18 months since I left there, but it only took about 4 to realize that she was correct lol. I worked a psych unit for about a year and have been helping a small home health facility get off the ground since then, but I'm bored to tears by it. So yeah, I think I'm going to go back to a med/tele floor pronto!

As for the names of the wife and kid, we definitely don't have that in common......but I'll work on it!

And for gosh sakes, rent 'Meet the Parents'.....you've GOT to see Focker defending his decision to be an RN in front of his future in-laws (a few of which are docs). I bet you'll find it's one of your favorite scenes!

i will make a random jump in -- meet the fockers was not really that good ...you could do a lot better as far as recent movie references are concerned. anchor man much funnier (meet the fockers makes the same jokes, over and over again)

as far as life is concerned, stella artois was $3 a draft tonight at smokin joes, if anyone from pittsburgh around to care

cheers
Kyle: Thanks for stopping by.....I agree that 'Meet the Fockers' was disappointing. But any male nurse would get more than a kick out of 'Meet the Parents', particuarly the scene I referenced above. But I agree, 'Anchorman' was damn funny.

That's too bad. Now you can't see the shit happening around you all the time either.

Z:

I lived in Tuskegee for awhile near the Institute. I will pick up Meet the Fockers (sorry I meant Meet the Parents) this week as a rental and check it out. I am sure that I will love his explanation. One of my favorite shows on TV is Scrubs due the fact that I work with characters like that every day.

Patrick and Scott:

My brother went in for submariner but he got a medical because of sleep walking. I guess you really don't want a sleepwalker on a boat. I can only imagine what it would be like on one of those beautities out at sea. Submariners never get the credit they deserve for providing the protection that they do for this country. I say thank you both for all the years of service.

Hi guys,

"BTW, my minor was Psych."

6,That was my major.

This is a little off topic, but I must be living right.Went into home depot today to buy speaker wire for my IB(yes, its finally done).I bought 100 feet of 12/2 gauge wire marked 37 cents a foot.
When I came up to the register to pay,the young lady said "that'll be $1.12".It seems since it was the end of the roll,I recieved a discount, the cost was 1 penny per foot plus tax.

Sometimes, that karma really does come back and say hello
post #381 of 1614
C'mon, Dean-o! We're/I'm waiting for the update on your Maggie demo day!
M:

You aren't helping any.

So did you use your major in your current position or did you go to work in another field? Hmm...I will have to watch the wire spools at my local HD now to see if they are near the end of the roll or not.

Z:

Dean (I am sure) is smiling too much to post about his exploits yet.

6: You may be right about Dean....between that flashy sports car of his and the Maggie demo, he may just been feeling too good today to come back here and mess with us Either that, or maybe a Bose salesman got a hold of him lol

By the way, if any of you guys have not yet watched 'Unbreakable' on your systems, the sound quality and BASS is amazing! I made the mistake of watching it at around 2am last night.....This may be one of my new reference DVDs for audio demos!

I just got back, and what a trip. Keeping true to my luck, the 1.6s I went to hear sold this morning a couple of hours before I got there. So, I had to settle for listening to the 3.6s.
I was stunned by their clarity and detail. I was also stunned while listening to DSOTM that I could hear sounds that seemed to come from over my shoulders, even though there were only two speakers playing which were positioned in front of me. I can see now why some owners of the larger Maggies feel no need for a center speaker, because these speakers put out one Hell of sound stage.
I have often heard people describe speakers as invisible, but I've never until now experienced it. The speakers just disappeared and created quite an ambience in the room.
The dealer also played a jazz CD which was quite amazing. I'm not a jazz fan, and I've forgotten the name of it, but some of you may recognize it. It was a live performance recorded at a club in Sweden. When I closed my eyes, I could swear I was at the club. The incredibly realistic sounds of the tinkling of glasses and silverware of the patrons as they ate and drank surrounded me.
All said and done, it was a very enlightening experience even though I didn't get to hear the 1.6s. As far as I'm concerned, if the 1.6s are half as good as the 3.6s it will still be money well spent for me. The 1.6s have now been moved to the top of my "just gotta have 'em, or I'll die if I don't" upgrade list.
Dean-O: Pretty cool! What about the Maggie IIIa? Is this the same dealer who had those things? And did any part of you entertain the idea of going to the 3.6s instead of the 1.6s?
I'm going to pass on the IIIa and hold out for the 1.6s. Although the 3.6s sounded incredible, once I saw them in the flesh I could see that they're just too big for my little room. :sniff:

I forgot to mention - this isn't the same dealer who has the IIIas.
I think that's a pretty good decision.....in my opinion, even though the 3.6s sound better (with the right equipment), I love the look of the 1.6s. For some reason that third vertical piece of wood on the 3.6s sort of bugs me. Makes them look outdated or something. The 1.6s are much more stylish, IMO. Of course, it could just be that the 3.6s are out of my price range and hacking on them makes me feel better about myself.....who knows?

Did the sales guy try to sell you any other brand of speaker?
No, he was very accommodating and let me poke around on my own. I also listened to a pair of Innersounds. I have no idea what model they were, but they were about six feet tall. They sounded nice, but they just didn't do it for me like the Maggies did. I also got to check out some high end Music Fidelity stuff - tube amps, pre-amps, and CD players. They were nice, but more than I want to spend.
An Ayres (I've never heard of them before, but it looked to be high end stuff) amp, pre-amp, and CD player were used for the Maggies. I can't comment on how they sounded, I was too busy being blown away by the Maggies.
Innersounds, huh? I've followed that whole mess from a distance, but don't know many specifics of all that went down with that Roger guy who designed their stuff. Supposedly the asking price on those things went through the roof when the new management took over. I dunno, I've never heard them but I can't imaging getting much better value for $1600 than the Maggie 1.6s. If you end up getting a pair I can't wait to hear about how they integrate into your room
post #390 of 1614
6, Being on the sub was a great experience and thanks for the complement. And as for your brother. Sleepwalking and any Navy boat or ship don't mix.

Dean, Sounds like you had one heck of a trip and an ear opening experience.

Where abouts in FL do you live again? My inlaws live in Sarasota.
