Hmm,
Thats interesting about the EQ.

I use to run an EQ back in the days when I had a 2 channel stereo system.Matter of fact,I still have the EQ in the closet somewhere.I believe out of its ten sliders,4 of those are in the bass range(its been years since I've looked at it).Guess I wont throw it out with the dirty dish water as the saying goes.

Now,once the wife goes to work today,I might actually get to finish my IB.

Mine works from home, so I can get an assistant when needed.

The Rocket EQ is supposed to be for bass only from what I've read. ThomasW at the Cult forum recommends the Behringer digital Pro EQ for bass at ~ $120. Most folks who have tried it seem to be happy with it, but being a fussy old man, I prefer something that's designed/packaged for home audio.
Be sure to write back with your thoughts on the Rocket EQ if you go that route. The BFD seems to be fairly difficult to use.

Anyways, sorry for being out so long, I spent the weekend pulling cabling in the new house. (778 Ft. of speaker and 454 Ft. of Cat5e according to the markings) A whole lot of fun!

H, it will probably be a while before I get the Rocket EQ. From what I understand it isn't available yet, and no idea when it'll hit the market.

Hello all I've been reading (aka lurking on this thread from almost the beginning. I also live in MN. One of my friends dad's had Maggies way back when.

I had always thought they were cool then and after reading all the posts on the maggies I kind of need to hear them again.

But my local dealer is closed on Sunday and Monday. Which are my best times to listen and test drive.

My BOSS is not real enthused about trying things out but once I make up my mind she will usually come with to give or not give her blessing.

here is the link to FLIM and the BB's on Amazon.
All there stuff will stretch your system and your ears.

Howdy Patrick and welcome to the thread.

Thanks for the link.I just placed an order for a couple of CD's .

As for the BOSS,just remember the line"but honey, all the other husbands have them."
Pat: Glad you stopped by! Thanks for setting me straight on the CD.....I never heard of those guys until '6' mentioned them, so I'll have to pick up a copy. I think it's great you are going to go and audition some Maggies....you may have been able to gather that several of us are pretty happy with these awesome speakers. It would be great to hear back from you after you've gone to take a listen....seems like there are lots of folks who heard Maggies in the past, but upon hearing the latest models really fall for them.

By the way, are you guys glad to be rid of Moss?

Howdy All,

I just bought a demo Marsh Sound Design A400s amp from Audio Advisor. I can return it within 30 days if it doesn't work out.

I am going to run my 1.6's with it along with my Marsh P2000t hybrid tube preamp. Although it has less power than my Earthquake Cinenova, I have a feeling that it is a more refined amp and will mate well with my maggies. I have done a lot of reading about this amp, and it is really well reviewed!!

http://www.audioadvisor.com/store/pr...%20Power%20Amp

I will hold on to the Cinenova until I have had a good chance to listen to the Marsh. From what I have read, my preamp/amp combo should sound sweet on the 1.6's!!

I will give you a full report when I can.
BTW, I saved over $800 on the demo!!
Hey, P! Congrats on your new amp! I read through the link you sent, and it sure sounds like you found a winner. I've never even heard of Marsh before, but apparently they design some top notch stuff.....can't wait to hear what you think of it! You're way ahead of me with the upgrades, but a good 2-channel amp is on my list. I'm kinda partial to B&K since I grew up just outside of Buffalo and I'd like to support them, but I haven't even begun to do much research on which amps are best for Maggies. Anyway, I know you were pretty pleased with the difference when you upgraded from the Outlaw to the Marsh preamp, so hopefully the amp will take it to an even higher level!

M and Z Yeah Flim and the BB's are some original pioneers in digital. Here is a link from the original label:
www.dmprecords.com/technology.htm

I heard them on a buddies stereo just after tricycle came out and it was just awesome!

M my wife had looked over my shoulder as I was typing that earlier post and all I heard from her all morning was 'Boss huh'.
Well, I've come up with another doodad to add to my ever expanding list of upgrades.
In reading up on the 1.6s and the 3.6s, I've found that quite a few folks are big fans of tube pre-amps and amps to drive them for music. Although I don't think they would be very practical or cost effective for my HT set-up, I would like to give it a try for music. The simplest and most cost effective idea that I've come up with is to use the Ah! Njoe Tjoeb 4000 CD player for music. Do any of you have any experience with this player? Other than great reviews, there seems to be very little actual information available online.

Z I forgot to answer your question about Moss and yes many people including me are happy to see the spoiled little brat go. He is great and virtually unstoppable when he feels like playing. BUTT!! he doesn't always feel like it.

So for me it is good riddance.

Pat: I don't blame you at all.....besides, you guys have just loaded up on talent in a sick way since he left! You have a few of my beloved former Buffalo Bills up there, so I'll be rooting for you guys except when you play us
post #314 of 1614
Oh no another Bill fan!! I work with a guy from Buffalo and that is all he ever talks about. He has Bills stuff everywhere. He also usually goes to at least 2 to 3 games back in Buffalo a year. It helps that several of his relatives have season tickets. And that we work for NWA.
Ha ha! Well tell your co-worker that I said 'Let's go BUFFALLLLLLOOOOO!!!!!!!'

Hey, you should be a fan of the Bills, too.....you guys are going to get a taste of defense Buffalo style this year....Ted Cottrell is an awesome D coordinator, and you've got Winfield and Big Pat now, too! A lot of us Bills fans were sad to see them go, but we couldn't pay them what you did.....oh well lol

Dean:

Great job on the cabinet build. I had a similar box made to go around my RPTV.

Have you thought about attaching your Maggies to the sides of your cabinet? You could put some hinges on the sides of the maggies and then attached them to your entertainment center on the sides. This would allow you to toe them in or out, get them away from you back wall and get them off the floor without having to build any stands.

One of the things that I see people recommend a lot if they are wanting a dead wall is to hang a large carpet or tapestry to absorb the waves. Plus it has a decorative touch to it that the "Boss" might enjoy.

BTW, Mike Knapp over at Home Theater Talk (http://www.hometheatertalk.com) is a huge tube fan for 2 channel music. Give him a shout over there and he can hook you up with some great tube amps.

Z and M let me know what you think of Flim and the BB's. Some of the sweeps they do (they generate a lot of their music on the computer) is unbelievable. One cut that I love is "Funhouse" off their Big Notes album.

Also, if you guys order from Amazon I have added a pull down search menu for them in the middle blue bar menu on the forum pages.

Patrick:

Thanks for the link and welcome to the maggies thread. Ain't it great!!

And I will close with "Go Chiefs!!"

Defense what's that?! We could sure use it.
Patrick,
I agree 100% about letting moss go. He's a great receiver, when he feels like playing. Unfortunately, that's about 20% of the time.

The first few years he was with us he was unstoppable. Now he's just wasted space.
Wow, a thread that is about both HT AND football! Doesn't get much better than this!

Don't forget tailgaiting, barbecue and beer.

Now were did I put my remote?

Z:

I really don't like getting smacked by my wife. So in my house at least she is the only woman allowed. (I don't count my 5 year old but she will be joining in on the who is allowed at the game too). She is also a huge Cheifs fan and yells at the screen more during a game than I do. She can get quite scarey at times.

Now if I was going to watch the game over at a friend's house then I say Game On!

I've already started building stands.
I've also found the stuff I need for sound treating the walls - Owen-Corning 703 rigid fiberglass insulation panels. Tapestry or carpet hadn't occured to me, but 'glass panels will be a lot easier, and won't require me to drive you-know-who all over the Southeastern seaboard looking for just the right carpet and color.
I turned down a great deal for a pair of Maggie MG-IIIa yesterday, so I hope the 1.6s blow me away on Saturday.
6: You are a wise man! Your wife is a Chiefs fan, huh? Wow, the Chiefs and their stupid stadium are like kryptonite to my Bills......Gotta love Vermeil, though!

Dean-O: Just out of curiosity, what were the details of the Maggie IIIas you passsed on? Was it a local thing? I honestly don't know if the 1.6s can out-gun an older '3' model or not......I think you made the right choice, though. The 1.6s are fine speakers
post #325 of 1614
Z, the deal was through my dealer. He said that he had originally sold these as new to the owner. He also said they tested them, and they're in great shape - off-white socks and oak trim - which is what I'm looking for to match my other speakers. $700 for the pair.
HELLO ALL MAGGIE MATES!!

I need some input from you guys. I bought a demo Marsh A400s amp from AA. (2 x 330wpc @ 4 ohms, 2 x 200wpc @ 8 ohms) I hooked it up last night and it sounded pretty good. I am auditioning this vs. my Earthquake Cinenova. (5 x 600wpc @ 4 ohms, 5 x 300wpc @ 8 ohms)

The Marsh has much tighter and authoritative bottom end then the Earthquake. I had to lower the crossover on my MartinLogan Depth sub from 45Hz to 35Hz and reduce the gain. This amp made that much difference!! But it doesn't seem to have as good of sound stage. I'm hoping that some breaking in will help that. I put in a CD this morning and am playing the Marsh all day by repeating play on the CD.

As is the case with my Earthquake, when I turn my Marsh P2000t preamp up to about 11:00, the amp starts to show signs of clipping. I am running all my gear on one 15 amp circuit. I will be getting a dedicated 20 amp line installed in a few weeks.

Do you think both of these amps are having trouble pushing my 1.6s with this 15 amp line?? I really want this Marsh amp to work for me. I can tell by the bottom end of the Marsh that it is a better quality amp!!

Do you guys have any opinions or advice on this matter. Thanks!!
P, I'm far from an expert on any of this stuff, but it sounds to me like your electrical supply is the limiting factor as neither of those amps should have a problem driving the 1.6s. Is there any way that you can speed up the process of getting your wiring re-done? It seems to me that testing both amps again with the upgraded circuit would be the best thing to try before making any decisions in regards to the amps.
P: I'm even less of an expert than Dean-O, but based on what I learned during the time I spent with my dealer, I think Dean is correct. He told me that a 200wpc amp that is stable into 4ohms is more than enough. That amp should have no trouble at all powering your Maggies. It has to be a non-amp issue.

By the way, this question will probably (definitely!) expose my ignorance on the issue, but what exactly constitues a circuit? Are there a certain number of outlets on the same circuit? And how do you know what kind of circuit it is?
Z, think of your breaker box as a circuit distribution center, and each circuit has its own breaker/fuse. Each circuit has a positive and negative wire coming out of the breaker box and goes to different areas of your house. There may be more than just outlets on a circuit - you may also have lights on the same circuit. Appliances that have a heavier load typically have their own circuits - water heater, A/C, clothes dryer, etc. You should be able to tell what amperage each circuit is by looking at the circuit breaker for each circuit. The amperage is usually given on the circuit breaker. Also, most circuit breaker boxes have numbers and labels on the inside of the box door that will give you an idea of what's on a given circuit. For example, the #6 circuit breaker in my box is for the dryer and is rated for 20 Amps.
Hi guys, P based on some calculations using your amps specs as a guide you need anywhere from 18 to 21 amps at max output to drive them cleanly.
I arrived at this using basic assumptions of 110 to 120 volts and .8 power factor which is the standard we used in the Navy when I was a NUKE on a Submarine.
I had to look up the formulas as it has been about 11 years since I got out and had to use them.

You can find the formulas here:www.engineersedge.com/electrical_equations.htm

So in theory you will need the 20 amp one that you are adding for your amps and the one you already have for everything else as the only thing that really draws and power is the amps.

Although you may need another for your Depth SW. If you have the space in your circuit breaker panel.

I hope that helps.

Pat
ps: the 110volts corresponds to 21 amps and 120volts to 18amps.
