I moved the speakers close to my listening chair. They look ridiculous and I had to listen in the dark. The singers were in the room. I could hear the bass guitar dude plucking the strings on Diana Krall Love Scenes. Trully awesome. By the way I also moved the tweeters out. To me it sounds even better this way in my room.

Z: thanks for recommending Diana Krall. I would never have discovered this musician. You don't even know me and you have given me a gift. Thanks. To all others on this forum--Thank You ALL, too!!
That's funny...I was just messing around on iTunes last night and ran across Diana Krall. She's got a great voice! I downloaded her version of Billy Joel's song "Just the way you Are" to test it out on my speakers.

Linda, yes, maggies are great speakers. Once you go maggie, you never go back to box speakers!!
Yeah, I heard plenty from AlanZ about them when he had them. He has some pretty nice ones now, though.

It works absolutely beautifully. If it were just for me without worrying about people outside the sweet spot, I would say it works better than with a CC.

The only issue is how many people you want to play to. I had my MMGs and currently have my 1.6's running as a phantom center, and I am the only one who has a problem with it when I sit off axis. All the friends and family are ignorant of soundstage and imaging to the point where they don't care. Although when I make them sit in the middle, they are confused by the beautiful sound coming out of the screen of the RPTV.

But no worries, phantom center is a great way to use these. It's just that the imaging collapses outside a 2-3 foot wide area.

It was in the 90's in L.A. yesterday. Backwards world.

AZ, a little too far for a demo. Come to L.A. ever for any reason?

Thanks for the offer Alan, but I am pretty well sold on it, just waiting for the room to be in the state to accomodate it.

Re: Maggie update

Brandon,
I think we need to invite ourselves to M's house for a demo. Hopefully he has a kegerator and a grill for some good all-american beef!
Hard to believe only a couple of days until T-day and we are setting record high temps. At least the L.A. area cools off considerably after sundown. I think about 3 am we finally get into the fifties.
When my house sells (the market is weak now), I may just take a weekend and come over for an audition before dumping funds into something new.
Were you around when the Swan Diva speaker craze took off? Every other thread was about them asking ,"the greatest speakers ever?". If you didn't agree you were flamed without prejudice. Getting to the point, there was a website to locate someone within your proximity that owned said speakers and was willing to demo them. I did demo them at guys home and it would be cool to offer the same to someone else in the future. I have given demos of my previous systems in the H/T format, and like I stated before the last one brought a guy with a badge. He was cool though.
happy days to all!

Andy,

You're welcome to a demo anytime.I've given a number of demo's here, including to my local AVS forum group.

Re: Maggie update

Its easier now than ever to setup one of those demo sites. All someone has to do is create a maggie owner's frappr map.

Re: Maggie update

If anybody here ever gets to the Cincinnati area, I would love for you to hear my maggies. I just added three additional tube traps (ASC 16" Super Traps) and it has taken my system to a new level!! These babies have some real bass slam with a properly treated room!!

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!!

Re: Maggie update

BB and M,
thank you for the offers and I am going to plan a trip around them. Now we all need to go to Ohio and hear P's setup. Sounds like a premise for a road trip! It would be cool if that was all I had to do, and could afford it. Travel around and listen to peoples setups. Damn everyday life and expenses keep getting in the way!
I hope all of you have a good Thanksgiving whatever you choose to do or however you celebrate it. I am sure most of you like myself have many wonderful things to be thankful for, living in the greatest country in the world. My wife, four children and 7 month old granddaughter top my list.

Re: Maggie update

Hello Friends,

A confession: Last week I almost sent my MMGs back:

Up to now only a handfull CDs of mine sounded absolutely gorgeous, but much of my music sounded less than nice. I told myself I was going to ship them back. Then I played my favorite CD again (Indian Ghazal) and it brought so much pleasure that I was torn about my decision about sending them back.

Day after Thanksgiving I was at BestBuy. They had a Klipsch sub for sale (the PB-10 for $200). I took it home and got it hooked up. Every CD sounded fantastic. I repeat: every CD, every CD, every CD.

The MMGs will never go back, unless I upgrade to the bigger Maggies.

You guys have been right three out of three: Maggies, AMP, and a quality sub. Okay, the sub I got is not a Hsu or a SVC, but for me its good enough.

More listening,

Gasdoc

Re: Maggie update

Any speaker can sound bright if not balanced on the bottom end. I would GUESS you might not have felt that way with 1.6s or larger and a big, huge, SS amp because they would have a lot more bass inherently but the MMGs obviously needed some help. No problem there. The number of $550 speakers that have good clarity, speed, accuracy, and transparency and ALSO do not need a sub to produce full range sound is seriously zero. If there was a $550 speaker that did all that it would be the best selling audio item in the history of the world.

Re: Maggie update

gasdoc: Glad to hear that you found some improvement by adding the sub Something you should keep in mind is that you have a very transparent and revealing pair of speakers....while great recordings will sound great, less than great recordings may very well sound like crap. It comes with the terrirory of having such a revealing speaker. While someone like myself may absolutely love that quality (transparency), you may not. But I dare say that when you hear something that is not appealing to you, it's got much more to do with how it was recorded than it does anything with the speakers

Re: Maggie update

Congrats Gasdoc on the sub.

One thing to keep in mind when using the MMG's.Although they are rated down to 50 hz,they start to fall off at about 80 hz.
To have a balanced sound(highs, mids and bass),a sub is required to bring out their best qualities.

Re: Maggie update

Gasdoc....MAGGIE MAGIC!! ENJOY!!

BTW, looks like it will be OSU/USC in the BIG ONE. Can you say ROSE BOWL!!

Re: Maggie update

Thanks everyone:

Based on your comments I will try my passover at 80 and see how I like that. The Klipsch sub 10 is working out OK, but I will always wonder what the HSU/SVS subs might have done. Anyways....

The sub increases the "sweet spot" quite a bit which is nice. I think that other than a DIY stands for my MMGs I might be done. Maybe MYEs......

I also got a 1080P Mitsubichi DLP RPTV this last week. Quite nice!!. High Def locals and DirectTV look fantastic. I can't wait to see what a 1080P signal will do.

The only thing I am missing now is time to listen....Well.......

Thanks a lot you all. I mean it.

Re: Maggie update

As an update, I purchased a Forte Model 3 amp. It puts out around 350w RMS into 4ohms. Its an amp from when Nelson Pass was at Forte. I doubt he designed it top to bottom but I hope it has some of his magic.

That should be a nice upgrade, Charles....the MMGs will be happy

Re: Maggie update

Hello All,
Using MMGs as fronts, phantom center, Klipsch Sub10, and el cheapo Polk R30
as rears.
Watched Disney Cars with the family yesterday. A very immersive experience and very clear dialogue. Hooked up the MMGs directly to the Sub-10 bypassing the sub out from the receiver.
Now even in strictly stereo mode the sub comes into play.
Loving every music/HT experience.
I may put up my Athena ASF-2 for sale and buy some MYE stands.
Thanks,
Gasdoc

Re: Maggie update

I got the new amp and the improvement is pretty nice. Not earth shattering but I can clearly hear that the amp maintains better control over the speakers. It would probably be even better if I had a nicer pre-amp but right now I'm still using the H/K receiver as a pre-amp until I get, hopefully, a nice tube preamp.

Re: Maggie update

Thanks for posting my pic, 6!! There is a discussion on another forum about room treatment vs. non-room treatment. I'm here to tell you that my system now has the well balanced sound and fantastic soundstage that I knew I could achieve with the proper acoustical tools. I have spent many $$$ and much time to finally realize the full potential of my 3.6 maggies. I knew from the start that the room would be the hardest obstacle to the sound I so desired.

My latest additions are (3) 16" ASC Super Tubes that are placed in the corners. These have made the biggest improvement in the balance of sound than anything else. You'll notice that my sub is now positioned in the center behind my audio rack sitting on top of an ASC Sub Trap. On top of the sub is a Michael Green Design (MGD) Floor Standing Room Tune to help fill in the center. You also see (2) 11" ASC half-rounds and in the corners above the Super Traps are additional MGD Room Tune products. And of course there are the fake plants scattered about. So as you can see, the rear wave of my maggies is treated with absorption, diffusion, and reflection. It took some time to realize the proper amount of each, but I wish each and every one of you could hear the results. I have had several professional musicians over to listen and they have been blown away with the life like presence the music has to it.

And I'm sure each room and each system requires differing amounts of treatment, mine required a bunch!! Have a nice day!!
