Re: Maggie update

Well,I sort of have an update.Today is july 16 ,hows that

Ok,on a more serious note.I was at a local audio shop picking up some cable for my bedroom HT.I saw an Old M&K mx-2000 subwoofer in teh corner they were selling for a song(ok,it was the same price as lunch for the wife and I).

I called M&K(a local company for me) and asked about the mx-2000.It seems this was their 1st push-pull design(2 12" woofers) from 1990 and is a true dipole subwoofer(their newer subs while push pulls arent dipole).with the same amount of sound coming out the front as the back,or in this case ,the 2 sides.

I picked it up and brought it over to M&K for a complete refurb(btw,it weighs in at 125 pounds).

After 3 weeks I brought it home and calibrated then sat for a listen. What do I think? For movies,I prefer my IB.For music, the mx-2000 is a perfect match for the 3.6's.Lighting fast, and very detailed.
So now of course, the wife is asking me why I need 2 subs and wanting me to get rid of one or the other. If I have to make a choice, its gonna be a tough one

Re: Maggie update

M, just tell her that you really don't have two subs, cause the IB is basically just part of the house, LOL.

Re: Maggie update

Ok guys, I'm 16 and I've never listened to a maggie (or until recently heard of Magnepan) How would my family like the sound from them? We are trying to build a very low visual impact system with a PJ, but the audio is giving me headaches. My dad doesn't want any floorstanders or bookshelves or anything giant sitting on stands mounted to the wall.

I was looking at these expensive in-walls but nothing look right for the money. Then I saw the Magnepan MMGWs and I was like: " $300? that's not bad at all for planar speakers." Unfortunately I have no way to know how they will sound in a 5.1 system. We watch some DVDs and listen to a lot of music, so this will be about 60:40 music to DVD.

I'm looking at the harman kardon AVR635 (75x7) because it has everything we need and it looks good, but I'm also open to suggestions.

We are also really trying to spend less than $3000 for the whole set-up, so the MMGWs make sense. The MMGC is a bit of an issue. Ideally we would want everything mounted on the walls, but that center seems pretty big. How does using a pair of MMGWs for the center work?

Thanks for any help!

Re: Maggie update

Good morning Colin,

I use MMGW's as my surrounds.
As to how your family will like them, theres no way of knowing that until you try them.Maggie does have a 60 day return policy if you dont like them.

The MMGC is big,no question. You could use it under your screen or give Maggie a call and ask how to set up the MMGW as dual centers.
One thing you didnt mention, the MMGW's only play down to 100 hz.A sub is a must to get any type of bass sound.

While the HK wont bring out the best in the MMGW,it should be acceptable in a family environment.

Yeah, do you have to pay shipping if you don't find them to your liking? They don't weigh much so it wouldn't be too much of an issue.

I'm looking at getting the SVS 25-31 PC+, which should fill in the low in pretty well, shouldn't it? From what I've read, the maggies have a pretty steep drop-off, so they will play pretty well down to 100 Hz, but no farther. Is this true?

It has pre-outs, so later on could I add something like an Emotiva amp to add extra power? I don't think we (the family) could tell when a planar speaker is underpowered, they aren't huge audio purists.

Cool, I think I'll call them today and see what they recommend!

No, no.....you don't understand.

When I put on a CD, sit down to listen, lean back and close my eyes, my maggies are gone!! I can not locate them in my room!! The sound stage is so vivid that I think the music must be live!!

Will, I have never heard the 20.1's, and I doubt that I will ever be getting a pair of them. But I am seriously thinking about upgrading from my Rotel amp!!

Glad I got your attention anyway guys. We need to keep this thread going on. And where is Z and Dean??

Re: Maggie update

I was thinking of you guys when I was out at CEDIA and saw some nice planars. I also saw a room that they had set up with a front projection system that used a transparent screen material that used a microweave instead of holes. As I listened to the image coming out from behind the screen (as it should be) I was also thinking how great it would have been to have a great set of Maggies behind the screen. Talk about realism.

Glad to see that all still have their Maggies.

Re: Maggie update

Hey 6!

Do you hit most of the big shows each year? I'd love to be able to go to CES or the RMAF at some point....I love hearing/seeing new stuff

As for Magnepan, they are truly one of the greatest speaker companies in the world, IMO....I know that 'M' and I have been busy at another forum trying to help people with their questions and bringing them into the Maggie family

Re: Maggie update

As a side note,

I invited one of the local Avs forum speaker guru's(his opinion is well respected on the forum) over to my place to listen to my Maggies.Yesterday,he took me up on my offer and stopped by.

He had heard Maggies before in a show room only ,and wasnt a Maggie fan by any means.

After 4 hours of some HT listening ,but mostly cd music(we also moved speakers, changed many cd's,and listened in 2 channel and multi channel),his comment on 2 channel was,"wow at times the speakers disappear"(kind of fits in with P's post above.)

He is a multi channel music advocate.I kept telling him 2 channel when done with the right speakers can be just as spacious .

While we both agreed, box speakers are more dynamic in the mid range, the clarity of Maggies truly impressed him. The Live performance air of a panel speaker won him over.

Re: Maggie update

Hello All,
Anyone around in the greater Detroit area who has Maggies that the consider well set up. I am considering a setup using the 3.6/r for the fronts, the 1.6/qr for surrounds and cc3 or the c20.1 if it gets released for the center channel. I live in Ann Arbor, MI and would love to have an opportunity to hear them in an HT setup before I pull the trigger and discover that they aren't for me. I've owned a pair of the SMG series (don't remember if they're a, b or c) and currently own Martin Logan CLS and love the sound of both. I'm concerned about dynamics since they'll be used for both 2 channel music and 5.1 HT duties.

I'm also wondering if I'm being overly optimistic thinking that this setup will work well in a 15'6" long 13'6" wide space thats open to one side.

Finally what subs are folks using. Any comments on the REL Britannia series?

TIA,
Ali

Re: Maggie update

Good morning Lotia,

I think Alan P is the closest to you.Z and Dean are in Florida,I'm in Cali.

Although Maggies dont have the dynamics of a box speaker in the midrange, when powered properly(that is the key),they do have some dynamics.Setup correctly,it really becomes a non issue.

As to room size, the only way to know is to try it.My room is 20 x 15 and I have 3.6's,MMG's and the MMGC center.

You might want to ask about someone local, and whether the REL will blend, over at the Maggie users group webpage.Heres the link.

Happy shopping and keep us posted on the outcome.

Re: Maggie update

Lotia,

Several years ago, and in a different house, I had an all maggie 5.1 HT system that was fantastic. I have since upgraded to two different systems, but my maggies are strictly 2 channel now. (3.6's)

My old Ht consisted of 1.6's fronts, CC3 center, MC1's surrounds, and a SVS PC-Ultra........WOW!!

You are more than welcome to come down and listen to both my systems anytime (northern Cincinnati).

Re: Maggie update

Thanks for the kind offer Alan P. Wondering what you changed over to? I'm currently using electrostats (original Martin Logan CLS) in a two channel system and am having difficulty letting go of a lot of the planar sound characteristics. I am aware that Maggies and Martin Logans don't sound exactly the same, but they do share some of that planar speaker magic.

Curious to see what a former Maggie user switched to instead, and what precipitated the move.

TIA,
Ali

Re: Maggie update

My 2 channel system can be seen here:
http://www.integracoustics.com/MUG/MUG/pix/HTFer/

My current 6.1 HT system consisting of B&W 600 series speakers can be seen here:
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/gall...g2_itemId=2941

The simple reason I went with 2 systems is this;
I am an 80%/20% music/movies listener. My wife is just the opposite. When we bought our new house 2 years ago, I had planned on using the basement for a HT system with my all maggie line up. But one of the members in our local HTF group had a 2 channel system that got me to wanting to upgrade to a music only 2 channel system. Plus, my wife would have used the downstairs HT more than I would have. Our B&W / SVS 6.1 HT is really all we (I) need!!

Re: Maggie update

Hello all. First things first I must admit I have not read the entire thread though I do think I've read large parts of it in the past.

I'm thinking about bringing some Maggies in the house. Like many people, I have a budget. I also have other areas of the system that need upgraded, but unfortunately I think I need a change in the speakers soonest due to some things I'm hearing inherent to the design of my current speakers that I don't think I can fix with other upgrades.

My current speakers are probably worth $750-$850 on Audiogon. I have an HK receiver that will do 85 watts at 4 ohms and have heard that HK is good about actually being able to do 4 ohms. If I sold my speakers I could probably get a DAC (which I desperately need as I'm using the internal DAC in a ROKU soundbridge) and the MMGs at the same time and use my current receiver. There is a local Maggie dealer so I could take advantage of the 100% trade in allowance within a year and move to probably 1.6QRs. After that I would look at moving to separates including much higher powered amps (thinking about Outlaw monoblocks for 200-300 wpc.)

Is my thinking sound here? Can my receiver power the MMGs in a large room (24x38x8) and will the MMGs provide enough volume in that room (I don't listen at ear splitting levels but that's a big room)? etc.
