1933 King Kong in November - Page 7

Yeah it does sound silly in retrospect but it would've made a fun and campy film.

"Mount a couple of browning machine guns on Son of Kong's shoulders" Well hell, I'd watch THAT!

The 1933 pressbook for "King Kong" sold for around $21,000 last year on eBay and the "Son of Kong" pressbook went for around $12,000...the movie is still gold!!!

Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young will be available in a special 4-disc set of Kong in November, plus it looks like we'll also be getting a Ray Harryhausen commentary! Woohoo!

I hope it's true, here's a link.

Jackson working on DVD for original 'King Kong'

"Fans of this film are going to go crazy; we've got everything but the kitchen sink on here,"

In true Warner fashion, "King Kong" -- which has never before been available on DVD -- will arrive in stores in two configurations: a two-disc special edition and a two-disc collector's edition packaged in a collectable tin and including a 20-page reproduction of the original souvenir program, postcard reproductions of the original one sheets, and a mail-in offer for a reproduction of a vintage 27-by-41-inch movie poster.

Warner also will release a four-disc collector's set featuring the two-disc "King Kong" special edition along with "The Son of Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young."

Wow!!!

btw Kong has been available on dvd before, I know because I've bought it.

Wow, that sounds awesome. I hope the 4-disc set will have the Kong 2-disc collectors edition in the tin...

Warner needs to do two things in regard to "Son of Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young". Either make them available with the collectable tin too or have them available to buy separately so that those of us that want the collectable tin, can also have those other two films on dvd without having to buy King Kong twice.

Thanks for the link! November 22 will be a date circled on many people's calendars.

It's nice that Mr. Feltenstein has finally confirmed that a recreation of the spider sequence is included in this set. The extras sound great. No mention of a price tag though.

No mention of a price tag though.

This is one title that I don't care what the price tag is....

Same here... it'll be great if Mighty Joe Young had a commentary by Harryhausen, it was the first film he worked on and many of the effects were done by him. Can't wait.

Great ! The 4-discs set will be mine.

Don't be so quick to purchase this one. Wait until it gets the RAH Seal of Approval...

Sweeet!

I'd like to get the tin set but I definately want the 4 disc set w/ Son of & Joe Young.

Steve, while you are correct, I think the story was referring to Region 1. None of these titles have ever been available on DVD in Region 1, however, they've probably been available in every other region for years.

AMEN, Crawdaddy! I'm with you on that one! I also hope I don't have to double-dip to get the tin and Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young, but I probably would if that is the only way to get them. I guess we'll have to wait until we get the official announcement. Does anyone know when we should expect that?

Does anyone know when we should expect that?

I would suspect early next month.

Also, "King Kong" wasn't released in Region 1 and neither have those other two titles. I do have a Region 2 dvd of "King Kong".

I'm in the same boat as many of you. I want all of the extras in the Collector's Tin (Primarily the mail-in offer for the reproduction poster - I wonder which poster this is, there are some great Kong posters!). I also want the other films from the 4-disc set, so I hope that WB gives us the opporunity to buy them seperately or includes all of the extras from the tin in the 4-disc box.

It's going to be an expensive fall. It kills me when people say that DVD is coming to an end and that the studios are running out of material. What are they smoking?

I'm sure it'll cost less than a Monkey.

There's a blurb about this in USA Today. The collector's tin will retail for $39.99 while the standard will be $26.98. The article doesn't mention the cost for the box set.

The 2-Disc Special Edition has an MSRP of $26.99, while the 2-Disc Collector's Edition tin has an MSRP of $39.98 - from what I can tell, the 4-disc set is in fact the Collector's Edition tin packaged with the two additional DVDs for The Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young, but no official MSRP yet.

I'm curious to know more details about the mail-in offer for the vintage poster reproduction. I was surprised that Feltenstein was quoted saying the original is worth about $25,000 only because the last I heard Harry Knowles was offered more than $100k for it and still refused part with it.

Is that the actual box cover, Nils?

I'm not Nils, but Yup

It's also in USA Today.

It doesn't sound like Warners to make you buy two different boxed sets to get everything you want.

I have the region 2 DVD of KING KONG, too (it's mediocre) and the Japanese release of MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (which is terrific).

That would be an awesome tin, anyway I've been hyped for this for years definately going pre-order it as soon as it hits Amazon.com. Being 17 though it makes me sad that my peers and kids my age discredit older movies since more often than not there better than the movies coming out now. My only beef with older films though is the lack of blood not because I'm a gore hound but immediately you can tell it's fake. Anyway though I'm excited to see this with a great quality print, it'll be interesting to see on DVD since I'm use to old beat up/scratch up tapes from hollywood video.

Wasn't Fay Wray supposed to have been interviewed for this DVD release?

According to today's Variety, the Collector's Tin does in fact include all three films, plus the collectibles. That makes much more sense: the standard 2-disc special edition, or the tin with more extras and the additional 2 films.

Here's what the blurb says:

"A collector's edition packaged in a tin will include the two-disc special edition and two more first-time DVD releases: the sequel released later in 1933, The Son of Kong, as well as 1949's Mighty Joe Young. The latter is accompanied by two featurettes on f/x artist Ray Harryhausen and commentary by Harryhausen, Ken Ralston and Terry Moore.

Warner also will be releasing Cooper's 1935 release "The Last of Pompeii."

There's a small picture of the tin, but I'm at work and can't scan it right now.

One tin, please.

i hope the tin is just a container to enclose the seperate keepcases and other assorted extras, rather than being modefied to actually house the discs themselves.

if thats the case, i'll pick up the tin to get MJY, otherwise i really like the choice of poster art used on the 2 disc release, and much prefer having keepcases on the shelves rather than oversized, unique packaging.

if i can take the keepcases out, i'll toss the tin into the same box in the closet with my cylon head and wickerman case.

Am I dreaming? 1949's Mighty Joe Young. The latter accompanied by two featurettes on f/x artist Ray Harryhausen and commentary by Harryhausen, Ken Ralston and Terry Moore. Like they've been reading my mind and deciding Steve will want to have this and this included and some of this, yeah put that in too, that okay Steve? Wow! Thanks WB! hmmm or should I wait for the eventual single disc HD edition? Naah.

these are the tins from the R4 release
that's great news about MYJ with a RH commentary
