MythBusters and HTF... - Page 9

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

This was a cool episode (earthquake machine). Like Jamie and Adam, I wasn't expecting much to happen on the bridge, but the fact that they got the thing vibrating was both intriguing and scary at the same time.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Yes, that was impressive.

And I think Kari looked particularly fetching. There was one great cutaway that I'm sure will find its way into many a screencap collage.

Any chance of a screencap? Or a link" Please?

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

The moment I had in mind didn't quite live up to my memory, but this one from the same scene is pretty nice:

There was a scene where she was standing there in a shirt that was just above her waist line and showed off some belly skin!!!!

Here's my page of photos from the Mythbusters Panel at Dragon Con this past weekend.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Thanks Patrick! So what had Kari looking all embarrassed?

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Oh, at the start of the panel, they ran a video of "blooper footage" that ended up being stuff they can't air, but would be funny to show fans of the show in person at conventions. The first segment was testing for the presence of female flatuence, and, of course, Kari had to be mic'd up in her panties to capture fart sounds, and the whole process was pretty embarrassing for her, and some of the photos capture her reaction to the segment as she had to be mic'd up all day.

The other part of the video dealt with the lighting of flatuence, and Adam was game (as seen by the 3 photos I managed to snap of the screen). I've seen it done in person (silly college days), and the person doing the lighting produced blue flames, but Adam produced red flames when his flatuence was lit up (after a few false alarms in the segment).

The gang did warn that if the video ended up on Google Video or YouTube, or other video-sharing sites, their legal staff would get the footage removed from those sites, so if you do find it out there, watch it quickly because it may not be there later. There were quite a few people that did tape it for there own personal use (so many gadgets that record in movie mode these days, it's hard to keep control of such blooper footage).

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Oh, one more thing: The gang debunked the myth that Jamie and Adam were gay. Neither are gay. Adam is just hyper, and Jamie is eccentricly Jamie, and Jamie hates it when they do their Jamie impression in his presence, so they don't, but they will do it for an audience of their fans.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Not only does it appear that she is married, it looks like she may be with child.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

So the straw thought a palm tree myth....I would have loved to have been there to mention this - They said it was busted because they couldn't get the straw to go completely through the palm tree, but is that actually what the myth is??? Why would people report straw going completely through a palm tree? What would be the evidence (besides the hole, but I doubt that's what they are talking about here)?

I would assume the myth has to do with exactly their results...The straw (or thatch) being embedded into the trunk (even only a half inch or so). If I ever saw straw stuck in a tree (even just slightly) - I'd probably go around saying "The straw went RIGHT through the palm tree trunk!!!!".

So while I realize the myth is busted because it isn't EXACTLY as the myth states, since they were ready to go under the assumption that thatch could be mistaken for straw, why couldn't they go under the assumption that "embedded an inch into the trunk" is the same as someone saying "right through the trunk"?

Basically, I'd call it: "Confirmed according to what people actually believe happens"

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Yeah that was pretty cool seeing how it got stuck into the palm. I will say this, piano wire is some nasty nasty stuff.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

The 2 hour movie myth episode was pretty cool. Some were pretty obvious but man I was surprised by the ejector seat. Man that was sweet!

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

The two hour episodes always seem a bit too long for me. Maybe it's all the retreaded info after the commercial breaks.

I loved the sgt's crack about stiletto heels to Kari. It's always fun to see her embarrassed.

...it's definitely all that 'recapping' they do.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I loved the ejection seat! Never thought 10 psi could have such an effect! As a proof of concept, such a device could easily be implemented in most sedans, making for a rude awakening for the passenger!

The other stunts were also a lot of fun to watch. I pretty much expected the sword myth to be busted for the reasons depicted. I wasn't sure how the car jump would end up, but it's always fun seeing it end up with a crash. Shooting a lock off? I knew it wasn't that simple. Still, it's nice to see the Master Lock brand hold up so well. Finally, the awning surprised me on how wouckly it stopped a falling body. It was also funny seeing how the insurance company said "no" to Adam, but "yes" to Torey for the live test. Adam was truly pissed!

Great show, but I agree. There was waaaay too much filler, even with the commercials removed.

If I were Tory, I'd be feeling a little "expendible".

Just how many times did they have to show that "Austin Powers" clip?

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Wow! It seems like there have been so many myths that just don't work, that I was rolling my eyes at thier attempt to put an air cylinder through a cement wall. I figured it would have just bounced off the wall because most of their latest myths have been pretty lacking in the "Confirmed" department.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Yeah it was amazing how easily it went through that wall and into the next. Looks like they are trying to test out some new mythterns by giving them a little screen time. I think between Adam and Jamie and the Trio, they have enough.

So how about someone suggesting the myth that HD isn't that much of an improvement over SD. We can get them to shoot and air on Discovery HD for once. And of course, bust that myth.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

New episode after several weeks. Seeing things explode is always fun.

The old west myths were interesting. I was impressed with Grant's motor-driven fanner.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I had something to say about the scene where everyone was shooting the hangman's post at the same time, but I'm afraid it would be a bit too political for this forum...

Somewhat surprising results of the concrete glider build off. Nice to see Adam win one for a change.

I know! The show never fails to surprise me.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

There's an interesting article on the NY Times website that is worth reading: The Best Science Show on Television?

One thing about the article reminded me of this thread. Back on the first page, a few people were commenting on the apparent animosity between Jamie and Adam. Remembering that discussion, I found this passage quite interesting.
Quote:
They are buddy-movie mismatched, the straight man and the goofy guy, Superego and Id, Martin and Lewis. On the wall at Mr. Hyneman’s company, M5 Industries, a sign expresses his own forcefully precise and orderly nature: “Clean up or die.”

“When we work together, he’s generally leaving a wake of destruction in his path,” Mr. Hyneman grumbled. “Considering it’s my shop and my equipment, it’s irritating.”

They are, in fact, so different that Mr. Hyneman said, “We don’t even like each other.” Although they have worked together for 13 years, they don’t socialize: “We don’t hang out with each other any more than we have to.”

At the same time, he said, their differences allow them to approach each problem from a different perspective. “I find myself feeling out of balance or awkward without him there to bounce things off of,” he said.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Did anyone happen to catch the latest episode? I loved the result of the 'bullet fusion' at the end. I was also surprised that the backwards bullet ended up being confirmed. This show never ceases to amaze me.

So true! I thought the backwards bullet was going to be impossible to replicate and I thought the sniper myth was going to be an easy confirm. Hmmm, once again, TOTALLY wrong!
