MythBusters and HTF... - Page 8

Considering they always used Diet Coke, I assumed it had to do something with the diet sweetners/preservatives.

Yep. If memory serves, the final judgement was that it was a combination of the nucleation (sp?) sites on the Mentos for CO2 bubbles to form (Smooth, wax-covered mentos did nothing) and three specific ingredients of Diet Coke: aspartame, sodium benzoate and caffine -- all three of which caused on increased "eruption" on their own.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

So who is going to do what Jamie did and take a swig of coke and pop in a mentos?

I know! That looks more dangerous than the Pop-Rocks experiment.

What happened? It'll be a while before we get the episode.
Personally, I think that sounds like more of an Adam thing to do.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

He popped one in and immediately started spraying everywhere through his walrus lip fur. It looked like it startled him a bit, but he did it again. It was pretty funny, and definitely more of an Adam antic.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I was cracking up at that one. Jamie had a look on his face like a little kid..."Do it again, do it again!"

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Yeah, it's always funny to see Jamie be a bit less cautious than he usually is.

I loved when Adam had that soda accident on the lathe.
"Don't tell Jamie!!!!!"

Yah, that was classic.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Those trainer helicopters look like fun. How much are they?

The only true myth this week was the postage stamp on the helicopter blade. However, it's fun to see Adam and Jamie move away from typical mythbusting and just try to figure out through experimentation how something works. And with Diet Coke bottles foaming around the world, this was the perfect subject.

How much does that lathe cost again? I believe someone mentioned it in a previous episode. Keep Adam away from those things!

OK, so an epiosde about a GIANT sub woofer and no one has commented yet?????

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

That was one of the funniest things I've seen!

What was really intereresting was that while it didn't break the record for db's but still put out an impressive ~160 it was that it was at such a low frequency. Something like 16Hz?

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Yes, ~161 dB at 16 Hz. I'm sure the guys at SVS would be green with envy.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

We all know they say NOT to try anything presented on the show at home. But c'mon! A subwoofer? How many here would actually try that just to see how far they can push it? I'm already trying to figure out how to better stabilize the entire contraption!

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

That was a pretty insane bit on the mythwoofer inside the car. I was quite fascinated by it.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I want them to revisit this using a car without a sunroof.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I'm surprised they didn't weld the sunroof shut, either.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

but it seemed like they didn't take escaping air into account. It felt like they were expecting the car to just fall apart from the pounding vibrations alone (almost like an air canon) and not "explode" (which was the more likely scenario) from the build up of air pressure.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I don't think that air pressure would've built up. If the car was theoretically sealed, there would only be a finite amount of air in the chamber. For the air pressure to build, there would need to be an inlet for new air to get in with a oneway valve so that nothing gets out, like an air compressor.

The destruction would be from the pressure waves coming from the cone.

I don't claim to understand air pressure completely, but wouldn't the sound waves be stronger in an air-tight container (i.e. a sealed car)?

I guess I'm viewing it like a balloon...you don't need more air to enter the balloon to pop it. You just need to squeeze it. Not that the car would deform like a balloon, but considering the size of the sub woofer (and the strength), perhaps they could have expanded and deformed the car enough (with the moving air inside) to do something. I mean, they did get the sun roof to pop.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I think they are inevitably doomed to revisit this episode... They went to so much trouble to have it brought down by sunroof. They shot their wad prematurely, so to speak.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Mark, I am no expert either but I do think that if you put a air pressure gauge on a sealed vessel with a moving cone in it the pressure would never rise above a certain point.

So it may be semantics but I think it is the pressure wave that would cause the destruction not the total rise in air pressure. I think I understand it in theory but I am doing a lousy job explaining it. Maybe a mech or sound engineer would be able to explain it better. I should be able to since my degree is in sound engineering, but I haven't used that knowledge since I graduated.

I would've never picked a vehicle with a sunroof that's for sure. And I do think it's possible to cause some destruction if they gave it another go.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Not as many funny moments as the first "Crimes and Mythdemeanors" but definitely more interesting. So much for foolproof finger scan locks and sonic sensors!

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Tory got the worse of most of the attempts to thwart the detection devices. Kari is just too cute for words.

I know! The look on her face, when the white bed sheet fooled the ultrasound alarm, was too precious!

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Ultrasound alarm fooled by a bedsheet. Infrared alarm fooled by a pane of glass. Fingerprint scanner fooled by well made fingerprint copies. Just how terrible are these alarm systems? I was hoping that at least one of them would work as advertised. But to have ALL of them fail so miserably by the simplest of houseold items is totally ridiculous!

And to think these same security systems are commonly used to protect all sorts of sensitive areas. Kinda scary really...

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I think the moral of the story is not to put all your eggs in one basket. I would be interested seeing whether they can get through a room with all three types in operation.

Have they attempted to debunk the "Once you go black" myth yet?

It's not a myth. I volunteer.
