Don't feel bad. She still got to make things blow up.

New Season starts this wednesday! Looks like they are tackling movie myths again for the first episode.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I was laughing so hard when Jaime was trying to climb the duct. I haven't laughed like that in a long time - tears and everything.

The opening bit was pretty awkward. I think it's best to leave that sort of thing to Good Eats.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I was laughing at that part too. "Thud" "Thud" "scrape" "Thud".

Some fun myths and cool to see it work in theory but not exactly practical. I wish they tried some kind of aerosol spray to check the lasers and see if that would set off the alarm like the powder did.

Overall it was interesting because the current short film I'm making is a heist movie with a couple of those gimmicks in it. Am I going to change the script to reflect? Hell no, it's a movie.

I'm with you, Jason. It looked like Grant was about to wet himself when that first "Thud" hit the duct. It sounded like Jamie himself may have been laughing, too.

I liked Adam's comments at the end about how you had to be an Olympic athlete to make the climb up the building using the suction cup system.

Of course, that may have been the problem in the first place. In the movies, the people pulling off these "heists" are usually professionals with years of practice, while Adam, Jamie and the others are science geeks who appear to be honest, mostly.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Speaking of Grant, it looks like he got his teeth straightened.

Uhh...did ANY of you know about this: http://www.fhmus.com/articles-1276.asp

And if you did, why didn't you share?

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Woah! Actually, while that's hot, she doesn't look as good all "Dolled" up as she does when she's all Mythbusters "Grunged" out.

It must be her "Tomboy" look that makes her stand out because it's not like she's so much hotter than most women on tv.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Agreed, though a better stylist probably could change our minds .

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

BTW, last night's new episode had something for everything, including a "cursed" snow plow and Adam barfing, but also a new member of the team. Jess, one of the girls from the "Archimedes Death Ray" viewer competition, has come on board.

Just a heads-up that next week's episode will tackle the Diet Coke/Menthos phenomenon. They won't try to disprove it. Instead, they'll try to explain what makes it work.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

What is the diet coke/menthos phenomenon?

There are videos all over the web (YouTube, Google Videos, etc.) where people take a full 2 liter bottle of Diet Coke and drop anywhere from a few to a whole pack of Mentos mints into the bottle. This creates a reaction, causing the soda to gush out of the bottle like a geyser. The "fountain", or stream, of liquid shoots up to pretty impressive heights.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Oh ok, never heard of that. Don't like Diet Coke, don't like menthos.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Here's one of the links showing the Diet Coke and Mentos experiments. These guys do it creatively.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

If you look at the Kari Byron FHM photos or the video on the site it shows the Mentos/Coke reaction.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I just saw a promo for the show so got to see the reaction. I must say, that's quite the reaction.

I missed this weeks show, what did it cover? Will try to catch the rerun.

AFAIK, there wasn't an ep this week since it's Shark Week. They just replayed the Mythbusters Shark Week special.

I would hope so, since there is nothing to disprove. It's an experiment, not a theory. I've done it a few times in the parking lot, it's a lot of fun. It's hard to top the first time, as nothing prepares you to the speed of the erruption and you end up soaked.

I would say my attempts toped out at 10ft. Getting as much menthos in there at once as possible is harder than it sounds.

But it's a rewarding experience

If you'd been watching Letterman this week, you wouldn't have needed to ask. On Tuesday night they reran the episode where they had two guys (I think it was the same two guys in the YouTube footage posted above) doing a demonstration of the whole thing. It really was a thing of beauty to watch.

Although, as already discussed, it's not a myth to bust, since pretty much anyone can do it, it will be interesting to find out why it happens. I'm looking forward to seeing the episode when it makes its way to NZ.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I wonder if there there really are some myths about it? or maybe they'll test to make sure that no myths arise from it, like, can you actually make a bomb out of it?

Wasn't there that fake video where the girls head explodes? Perhaps there's a myth about someone getting really hurt?

Adding any candy to any soda will cause it to foam up. Apart from figuring out what the chemical reaction is between sugar and carbonated water (and why the sugar in the soda doesn't trigger it), I don't see what there is to this myth.

A belated happy birthday to old pal of The Sneeze, Adam Savage!

And in the grand tradition that began with Eric, Enemy of Trains-- I give you Adam's first-hand account of how he started his special day....

My birthday began like this:

Me sleeping.

Addison (my son)'s voice pulls me from sleep with the following sentence: "Dad-- we were having a light saber battle and accidentally banged the (brand new 40 inch Sony LCD HD) tv."

After a quick series of parental computations about what this might actually mean, and what I'd like to hear next (like a dented frame, a broken button etc) I ask: "What happened?"

"Something colorful" he says.

A huge beautiful, ball peen hammer sized crack in the dead middle of the gorgeous image.

While this is a terrible story, I do think the response "Something colorful" is so fantastic, it might almost make the whole thing worthwhile.

LOL - Would Earl Hickey say that Karma is fighting back for all the times Adam has destroyed things at the work place?

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I just found out that some folks from Mythbusters will be at DragonCon (this upcoming Labor Day weekend), such as Kari Byron, and Grant Imahara. Anything you want me to try and ask them?

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

All I ask is that you get a nice photo of Kari .

The reason was actually pretty interesting and more complex than it seemed.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Considering they always used Diet Coke, I assumed it had to do something with the diet sweetners/preservatives.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

That was one of the cooler Mythbuster's episodes, especially at the end when they did some old favorites of theirs. The dry ice in a bottle, the methane bubble tower, awesome stuff.

Nice to see the video from the FHM shoot as well. double

Did anyone else feel sad when the model helicopter finally bit it? Such a waste.
