MythBusters and HTF... - Page 6

I have seen a weapon fired with a plugged barrel where the barrel split and peeled back in a perfect curl. I don't recall the age of the gun, though. I didn't see it personally, but I know of at least one incidence where a misfired bullet lodged in the barrel but still allowed another round to be loaded, which subsequently blew up the action when it was fired. I guess it wasn't pretty.

On every one of my four hunting trips to Montana I managed to plug my barrel with dirt, and soon after every time I did (after cleaning it), I got my deer.

I'll second Alan's post. Several years ago I managed to (unknowingly) plug the barrel of a 12-gauge shotgun. When it fired, the barrel split into four nasty metal shards--a very frightening experience. I never did figure out how it got plugged, but I can't imagine it was more than an inch of dirt. Using a finger would certainly have negative consequences for the pluggee, but don't be too sure the shooter will be unscathed!

As to the shotgun, they didn't mention any metalurgy changes in the last 25-50 years (since those cartoons first were aired).

Didn't the specifically address this? That's why they did a second test with Jamie's "older" shotgun.

The tailgate up or down showed they have not learned their lesson from the AC vs windows down fiasco. Why do they think that two different trucks will get the exact same gas mileage? It does not matter that they are both brand new and the same make / model. Way too many moving parts for a single test. The only way that test would have been valid is if they then switched the up / down gate and reproduced the same results. I hope they stop doing MPG myths unless they really spend the time to get it right and remove most variables. X gallons into an "empty" tank is doing it all wrong.

However, the water flow tank was really good and showed clearly that gate up is better. I expect both the tailgate and finger in the barrel to generate enough email so they will go back and revisit both.

Did anyone see the Airplane Sliced/Start a fire without matches episode?

Pretty good, but not the best.

And I almost DIED when I saw Tori's shirt. At first, I thought it said Silica, but I rewound and saw it said "Sicilia" - DAMN! I thought maybe Silica was catching on.

I was surprised the "Shredded Plane" worked as well as it did. I don't know if the results quite matched the original myth, though.

I am not liking Kari's new hair.
The shredded plane amazed me. While not an exact duplicate, considering the circumstances, it was pretty darn close.

And for the fire myths, looks like I'm going to keep a lot of steel wool and a battery in my pocket.

Next week they revisit the Death Ray. I wonder if it is because of that college that proved it worked.
Yeah, it was pretty amazing (and very scary) how quickly a plane can be sliced into shreds like that.

I actually didn't even imagine Jamie could have gotten through the plane with a chainsaw much less do it like a hot knife to butter!

Kari could shave her head and still be smokin' hot.

Hey, remember the water bottle launch myth? They refered to a Japanese video?

They put the video up on Ebaumsworld:

Worked for him, I wonder why Kari wouldn't do it?

What they don't tell you is that that is anonymous Japanese stuntman #19. #1-18 are why the water is a bit murky.

In regards to the Fire without matches.. obviously, there wasn't a boyscout amongst them.

Still, one of my favorite "fun" shows for the weekend

Considering some of the wacky Japanese game shows I've seen, they seem to be less cautious when it comes to safety and bodily harm.

Yeah, and considering the look on this guys face, he didn't seem to fair the stunt too well.

This show is amazing for its use of physics in almost everything they do.

How come we couldn't see stuff like this when I was in school

I might have got better grades!!
If Kari Byron had been my Physics teacher, I would have paid a lot more attention in class.

to her. just not the class i'm sure.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Another "revisited episode" but only one of the myths was one they supposedly got "wrong."

It's hard to keep a straight face when two grown men are trying to make a rocket out of salami. Maybe salami propulsion could solve NASA's budget problems. Still, the phrase "salami rocket" sound vaguely obscene.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Especially when the announcer said "Time to hide the salami".

It is cool that they listen to their fans so much and actually go back and revisit myths even though most of them tend to come out the same way.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Did anyone catch Kari Byron's appearance on Letterman earlier this year? I didn't know about it until I was perusing YouTube. She seemed to be having a good time.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

I think Kari's been hitting the late night snacks a little too much.

Who cares! She looks DAMN good!

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

This week's episode was a little lame. Trying to duplicate a gag from a Mr. Bean episode? Mind control? WTF.

Oh, well, it involved explosions and featured lots of Kari, so I can't complain too much.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Yeah, I didn't like how they kept calling the Mr. Bean thing, a "Myth" - A lot of times, I am surprised with the outcomes of some of these myths, but this one??? I pretty much had no doubt it wouldn't work.

They were definitely grabbing at straws when the guy scratched his nose..."Hmmm? Did he scratch his nose because of Tori's previous mind control???" - Ummm, even if he scratched his nose when Tori was saying it, I still wouldn't believe in mind control.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Okay, this one was definitely better than last week. Very cool that they got the Mercedes to run on vegetable grease. Not terribly shocked that none of the other miracle mileage boosters worked.

I was also surprised that the exploding pants myth was so easily confirmed. I'm never taking weed control advice from a New Zealander! Still, the success of the real experiment was so spectacular, I don't know the point of going with the explosive silver paint, other than "Mythbusters want big boom!"

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

Yeah when that hammer came down on that small pant sample, holy moly, where I can get one of those?

Kari got a bit cocky with her gun cotton which did nothing in the end.

That's okay, since it did plenty in the Confederate Rocket myth.

Re: MythBusters and HTF...

That's true. I just felt kinda bad for her, especially as she has become one of the breakout hotties....err stars of the show.

That hydrogen cell looked pretty cool to build. Would be fun to have around to fill up balloons.
