MythBusters and HTF... - Page 5

Enough with the movie myths if they don't even follow them right in the first place. And the raft was in the process of inflating in Indiana Jones, not already fully inflated. This show is starting to wear at the seams for me lately...

This was a really good show because of the pacing. Instead of just two myths having 50 minutes of setup and 60 seconds of payoff at the end, this one had lots of little payoffs throughout the show. I was taping it so I could skip the normal fluff when I watched it later but I ended up watching it live because it was so interesting nearly every minute. I wish all shows were done this way.

The only issue I had with the inflatable raft was the size of the raft they used was WAY bigger than the Indiana Jones raft. I understand they couldn't inflate it while dropping because Buster cannot move himself around to stay inside and inflating raft.

But does that really matter? I think they don't replicate them exactly, they just go for the 'essence' of the myth. It seems like they only do them exactly, when it's feasible, otherwise, they do what they can with their budget and man power.

I do agree that they're losing the 'novelty' of the show, but I guess that's to be expected. It seems like they're running out of good ideas. But any excuse to see Kari bounce around, Adam nearly destroy himself, and Jamie yell at everyone, is good enough for me to keep watching.

Was "Son of a Gun" a new episode?

Overall it was good. The civil war gun expert was an AWESOME shot.
No, that's a repeat. I'm not clear on when their seasons begin and end. Everything has been repeats since shortly after shark week.

Looks like new episodes started on the 12th, which was a highlights show.

Not really a "highlight" show. More of a "do it over because so many people say we screwed that one up" show.
Ah...good. I didn't catch it Wednesday so will be recording it tomorrow.
I loved Adam making fun of the "geeks" who email the show and say they did the tests wrong.
It wasn't a bad episode, but I am continuing to hate the sidelining of Adam & Jamie. Tory, Grant & Kari have gone from being just the Build Team to being actively involved in mythbusting. I like them all, but they're no Adam & Jamie!

I think it has something to do with the fact that Adam and Jamie (esp. Jamie) have a business to run and maybe the show was starting to interfere with it.

Jamie and Adam had more face time with this one. I myself have never been a believer in the five second rule. It's not that I don't eat something that fell on the floor; I just don't fool myself into thinking it's okay .

I admit I was pretty skeptical about the drum and was even unsure with Kari's initial "I can hear it!" testimonial. But once they got to the third location and the test was explained a little better (Grant listening via the mics and watching Kari's finger beats for sync) I felt better. Those clever Chinese .
One problem I had with the drum test was that I really don't think the drum had anything to do with it. It could have just been the hole, but they didn't do a control test with the drum out so we will never know.

I also would have liked them to put one of those petri dishes on a clean plate that's been sitting in your cupboard for a week or so. We expect the floor to be dirty, but what about our 'clean' dishes where the food will pick up pretty much anything that was on it?

Remember the ancient death ray with the mirros and the boat? Well some MIT students proved it feasible. http://physics.about.com/gi/dynamic/...desResult.html Pretty interesting stuff.

Good point. Maybe they'd be willing to revisit that one, seeing as they were so happy with it and it seemed like a relatively problem free project? I think, however, that it's likely a combination of the hole and the drum not one or the other.

Rockets + Mythbusters = Always a great show.

A really cool myth tonight and entertaining to boot. I still can't believe Jaime's first rocket embedded itself in the ground 5 feet. That was hilarious, not to mention the computer model flight prediction.

I liked the entire episode deidcated to one myth...and the fact that it was mostly Jamie and Adam.

Yeah, that was WILD!

I only caught part of the show during commercials for Invasion. So I caught both rockets going off. Can anyone tell me what the myth was?
Supposedly, a rocket was fired (during the civil war) from Virginia to...Damn, I forgot where...but basically the myth said it went like 212 miles.

They also said they fired short range rockets (with rope attached) from the shoreline to a stranded ship. They would then use the rope to haul the ship onto the shore.

Cool, thanks.

From Richmond to Washington, DC, about 100 miles.

It was sort of funny how these censored out some of the key ingredients. Guess they don't want us building our own rockets (or, more likely, the Feds would take a dim view of it).

It was also kind of odd how every worked right the first time (except for Jamie's little welding error, of course).

You know, Adam, there are far easier ways to measure distance than pacing off a half a mile.

I can't believe there aren't any comments about the truck smash!

This one was a bit bizarre. Jamie seemed to be a lot less on the side of caution. When the truck went out of control, he was like "whatever" LOL - and he and Kari seemed a bit too close to the accident for my comfort. Imagine if a truck lost control again, it could have easily barreled their way.

Also, it amazes me how quickly they can get these things done, especially after the first disaster. 90 minutes to reload??? Damn!

And the Vodka myths were kind of lame. The thing about the mouthwash myth was, Grant mentioned he still smelled the cigarette smoke, but wouldn't that be because it was coming from Adams lungs and not his mouth?

What the hell is wrong with you people....This:

is the reason to watch the show

...oh, and HERE is a good interview with Adam.

No argument from me Kevin. Love that second shot!

Hey, interesting changes this week. The opening credits now include Tory, Kari and Grant.

I thought this week's myths were pretty lame, but then after "Confederate Rocket" a lot of things would seem lame by comparison.
Agreed! Kari sure did know how to make her first 'on screen' appearance, a WONDERFUL one
post #145 of 311
The DVD of the three pilots is now availabe from the Discovery Store, the second pilot of course being "Biscuit Bazooka" AKA How Millions of Geeks Fell in Love with Kari Byron How much do you want to bet that disc is going to be their all time best seller?

The ep with the vodka myths was interesting in that we got to see her with red hair and then with black.

Maybe, but there was a great, "That's what she said." moment with Kari when the release cable jerked out of her hand:

"That's really stiff. I think this is a two-hander."

:b

Agreed. Not much to discuss.

As a motion sickness sufferer I appreciated this week's test. I'll have to try the ginger pills next time I go flying in a small plane. Adam already looked nauseous during the intro .

The truck bed mileage one was good to see. A few years ago the local evening news did a story on a study that was done that also showed driving with gate up was better. I don't own a pickup, but everything I'd heard up to seeing that info was it's better to have the gate down. I'm thinking those companies that sell the cargo web things just lost a bunch of sales.

The finger in the gun barrel was kind of ridiculous to try, but funny. I really wish they'd have done an animated Kari animal. Any thoughts what kind of critter would have been appropriate? I'm thinking a cute little bunny .
Of course there is a difference between tailgate down and tailgate removed, so they may have to revisit this one.

As to the shotgun, they didn't mention any metalurgy changes in the last 25-50 years (since those cartoons first were aired).

You would have to think that any metal that could contain the explosion of the bullet, is going to be stronger than your finger. And even if you COULD plug up the hole, it'd be only a matter of time before the air pressure forced your finger out.

Although I was really surprised at the bulge they DID get at the end of the barrel
