Flipper on DVD - Page 4

That said, in comparing it with a couple episodes from the S1 release, the first episode of S2 (which introduced Ulla Stromstedt as S2 semi-regular Ulla Norstrand) looked very good and on the same par with the quality of S1 episodes IMO.

Thanks for the video Q info.  Looks like I'll get this set sooner or later.

I got mine yesterday (well, this morning since they delivered it to a neighbor by mistake yesterday).

I agree totally about the cover, but I expected that.  Still, compared to the very pleasant artwork of Season 1 it is very generic.

I checked out a little of that first episode as well:  same somewhat grainy/scratchy underwater scenes and then pretty sharp/mildly muted color of the characters on the boat.  I'm happy with the transfers. Lets hope they play without skipping.  *crosses fingers*

MGM...hope you're reading this.  If so, thanks for getting this to us.  Gotta say I'm happy to have these.  I hope others will pick this up so we can get Season 3 real soon...and I'll order Season 1 of New Adventures/Jessican Alba like I said.  And Johnny Sokko would be great to buy along with those!!

Wanted to add that these Season 2 Flippers are not flippers.  One sided.  Burned instead of pressed, however...

Seven episodes into the Second Season and I can report that the quality is fantastic, every bit as good as the First Season, which was stellar.  The color is so vibrant and the contrast so sharp that when you look at the ripples of the turquoise water it almost looks as good as Blu-Ray.  There are some instances of stray lines on the prints used, but these types of things never bother me as they are reminders that I am indeed watching FILM and not video, which is appropriate given the source and its era. Thus far no issues at all with playback or damaged discs, but as with any MOD burned DVD-R it is advised a backup copy be made, if possible.

The series continues in the same vein as the first season, though they have added a potential love interest for Porter and thus far there is more focus on Sandy than Bud, which is a change from Season One, probably due to his appeal for the pre- and teen Tiger Beat readers of the time.  Also a very strange decision in the first few episodes to change the lyrics and style of the theme song to a Vegas lounge act number which refers to Flipper as a "lover." !?

I know there have been problems with MGM MOD titles, but so far I would say this one was a success and well worth the $29.99 it cost me at Amazon.  I will report back if I run into any problems at all.

^^

Walker,

Thanks for the info on the Flipper MOD set.  I'm waiting for a price drop before buying this one but I'll be getting it eventually.

Walker,

I look forward to hearing your report on Flipper Season 2 after you get through the rest of the set.

When I read the comments on Amazon, there were mixed opinions about the quality of the set. I am not a big fan of MOD, so I have been uncertain about a purchase for Season 2.

I have Flipper Season 1 and the quality was excellent and have always hoped Season 2 would eventually get a standard release with quality matching Season 1.

They look great. I'm on DVD 2 and haven't had a single problem.  I couldn't understand ANY fan not snapping these up.

Thanks, James. I am glad to hear another positive comment about Flipper Season 2.

You're welcome Chris.  I wish I could do a side by side.  Maybe some screen grabs sometime in the future.

I feel the second season follows the first in that it alternates between grainy scenes (mostly with Flipper swimming or wide shots of the ocean) to strikingly clear and colorful (closeups of the actors, Sandy and Budd sitting on the dock, etc).  I'm very very happy with Season 2.  They stored these masters very well.

I'd really like this to sell well so they will complete the series once and for all.  I'm doubtful about Bluray for this series, but they'd sure sell one copy.

Season 1 was released here in Britain.  However sadly it looks as if we will not be getting season 2. which is a great shame.

Is it possible to order this if you live in the UK? I put an order on Amazon on 9th August, its been nearly a week and it has not been shipped. I looked at the comments for this set on Amazon and saw that someone else put an order who is from London. He never received his set and said Amazon does not ship this set outside of the US. When I put my order in there were no mention of No International buyers. Anyway I have cancelled my order from Amazon. I would like to know if there were any other place I could order from?

I own Season 1 and I would like to have Season 2.

Related to "Flipper" & maybe its old news, but thought I would share:

Just watched "The Cove" last night.  An excellent documentary about dolphin captures & slaughtering in Japan.  It won the Academy Award this year for best documentary.

Richard O'Barry was the trainer of the original "Flipper" dolphins.  He is the star of this doc with the majority of screen time.

"Flipper" TV discussion, footage & rare, behind the scenes footage is prominently featured throughout the movie.

I was very disappointed when I learned that Flipper season 2 was an 'on demand' title as living in the UK this meant that it wasn't available to me.  However it looks as if season 2 of the original Flipper didn't last long as available from Amazon.  Can you read anything into it?  Does this mean it might be re-released sometime in the future as a 'shops' release.  Or was there other reasons for its short time on Amazon.  Does anyone know please? Thanks.

Flipper Season 2 is back up for ordering on Amazon, but the price is $53.99, which if my memory serves me correct, is quite a bit higher than it was previously.

Your memory is correct.  I picked this up for only $31.99 from Amazon when it was first released.

Gary "that price is way too high, IMHO" O.

I'll be danged if I'd bite the bullet right now and order S2 if I didn't already have it.  The episodes look fine, very much like the S1 transfers.  better to buy than to miss out and have to fork up 3 times that much later.  ;)

So...Season 3...?  $53.99 is fine by me on it.  I got that much in the sofa cushions...  can I order somewhere...?

*prepares to wait a long time for an answer*
