Anyone else really hate Valentines Day? - Page 10

Re: Anyone else really hate Valentines Day?

I go to the mall, go up to one of those directory thingies with my eyes closed and randomly point. Whatever my index finger lands on that's where I shop. This year it landed on flippin' Zales. A couple a hundred dollars on a cute pearl ring. She loved it. Thought I spent all day wandering around trying to find just the right gift. Hmmm it's the randomness that counts.

Re: Anyone else really hate Valentines Day?

Wow! How time just flew by....

An update to post #40. I've been back with my gf for the past year or so. It's going in the right direction (I think). I still hate V-day because of the expectations on guys to do the "right thing". Let me count the ways....

Roses delivered to her workplace....$$$
Giant Hello Kitty stuff animal..........$$$
Swarovski crystal pendant.............$$$
Dinner @ atmospheric Japanese restaurant near Golden Gate Bridge....$$$

To think I could've purchase a new AV receiver with the money spend for V-day. On the other hand, if tonight ends with a, ahem, "happy ending"....then I can overlook it.

It's been clear for some time now that the people of Southern Connecticut live to shove their marriages, children, relationships and Valentine gifts down Mark's throat.

Well, when you consider the area, you can understand the attitude around here (i.e. the "I'm better than you" attitude)

The soccer moms drive their Hummers to Starbucks (in their Horse Riding attire) while they snip at you because they are in a hurry to get to their massage/manicure, etc.
Why do I get the feeling that lifestyles in other parts of the country could annoy Mark as well?

I only hate people when I post on the internet. In real life, I'm pretty easy going.

He's ranting about a V-day commercial over in the "Commercials that really irritate you" thread.

Re: Anyone else really hate Valentines Day?

I feel obliged to post something in this thread since I've participated before, but I don't really have anything more to add that I haven't already posted. Not much has changed for me other than the new gadgets that I own and one more year on the odometer. I'm resigned enough to my situation that I've actually grown some hideous Cliff Claven-esque facial hair over the past few months. I defy anyone to be attracted to me!

Since the thread has bounced back to complaints about V-Day, I'll quote myself from two years ago so that its clear that this day doesn't really bug me.

As for Valentine's Day, I don't really give a shit. Celebrate it. Don't celebrate it. Whatever makes you happy. I can shut it out. Also, I'm a big fan of the free market taking advantage of lazy mates by milking them for as much guilt cash as they can get, but I've never personally been a fan of prepackaged sentiments. Take a piece of paper, fold it in half, and write how you really feel. It's cheap, it's easy, and it actually means something. But I won't pretend that my advice is highly sought after on this subject.

Amen. God didn't give me a snow day, but did manage a cold, soaking wet commute. I spent the day freezing my ass off. I'm just glad Greyhound's going to be back up and running tomorrow, because I need to get the hell out of here.

Re: Anyone else really hate Valentines Day?

The worst part is that this thread that keeps reappearing every year here at HTF is the only thing that reminds me about what Valentines Day is REALLY about.

Re: Anyone else really hate Valentines Day?

I'd trade your 3 inches of slush for my 30+ inches of snow in a heartbeat.

"Yeah, the final tally of this so-called nor'easter is about 3 inchs of heavy slush.... THIS SUCKS!!!!! GIVE ME SNOW!!!!"

I live in lower NY, near PA, and we got a decent amount. It was mostly snow/sleet/ice mixture that made the roads pretty bad. Then around midday snow was coming down so heavy that in about 3 or 4 hours it doubled what came down the previous night.

LMAO! Well, people piss me off in the real world, but I usually let that stuff go...too much effort and energy wasted in arguing.

I only like to argue on the internet because whenever I feel like too much effort is being wasted, I can just log off. but for some odd reason, I don't mind putting any amount of energy into arguing here.

I'd take that trade. The problem with the slush is that when the temperature drops the next night, the city becomes an ice rink. Mass General Hospital ER has full to the brim with people with broken limbs for two days now. It's a lot more dangerous than snow.

My wife broke her arm two weeks ago when there was a bad ice day.

Re: Anyone else really hate Valentines Day?

PhilJones: I agree. Wait til next week, temperatures are supposed to be warmer by late next week in the NYC area, talking like 40deg highs but still below freezing at night. Watch out for the refreeze!

That SUCKS! I'm usually oblivious enough to wander through without giving the day much thought.

This year, Valentine's Day was beautiful if cold. Yesterday was even MORE miserable than last year though. I still can't get over being in the Boylston outbound platform and watching the water come down the subway stairs like a waterfall. I took a couple second video with my phone:

It was literally impossible to make my commute yesterday without being soaked up past my ankles.

EDIT: YouTube fucked up the first video upload.

Re: Anyone else really hate Valentines Day?

I have honestly barely remembered it is Valentine's Day today. It took me an hour to figure out that maybe that's why a couple of people brought doughnuts and manapua to work this morning.

I don't like or hate this "holiday" -- I am barely aware of it anymore.

Re: Anyone else really hate Valentines Day?

Ah, pragmatic (smug) marrieds that we are, the missus and I didn't do anything special yesterday, but we will be going for a nice meal today instead. Since we got married, each year we go out just before or after the 14th instead, to avoid all the Valentine's Day crowds and nonsense of special (compulsory) set menus that most restaurants seem to have on the 14th.

Yesterday I got stuck working late (relatively, that is, past 8pm) as we had an urgent project to finish; I was rather puzzled when one of the juniors wanted to leave at 6.30 saying he had reservations, and the other one had already gone! It wasn't till later that I remembered the date...

Ya know, this is probably the most successful thread i've ever started here at HTF.

That actually depresses the living shit out of me.

Re: Anyone else really hate Valentines Day?

The best thing about this thread is watching the attitude towards V-Day change according to the single/attached status of some posters. A dyed-in-the-wool anti-holiday, anti-capitalist, anti-materialist; who would feed ol' St. Val to a pack of ravenous wolves if given the chance, suddenly becomes a candy heart and Hallmark sporting romantic just because someone with the appropriate plumbing is now paying attention to them.

It just goes to show you that all the cold, cool, and calculating Madison Avenue types got it pegged exactly right - A man will sell his soul (and empty his wallet) for a little nookie.

Thank God I've never been long involved with anyone into pet names, aside from something like "Hon". I did have one girlfriend who called me "Kiddo" and I hated it with the white hot heat of 1000 suns. I figured I'd try the "non-verbal" communication stuff mentioned earlier in this thread; rolling my eyes, gritting my teeth, putting my hands over my ears and letting out a blood curdling scream . . . but she never got the hint. I guess us guys just aren't any good at the non-verbal thing.

Meh, who's got the energy anymore. Besides i've done all my venting here enough to have it out of my system for at least another year or so.

I just avoid the stores, especially Hallmark, that place is a deathtrap for V-day haters, fast forward through those aweful jewelery commercials and ignor it.
