How many more of those damn movies do they need to do? Fifty? Seventy? One hundred? When will it end?!

Seven books = Seven films, brainiac.

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

That's kind of harsh, Sean, maybe the guy just didn't know how many books there were.

I bet he knows there aren't fifty.

Maybe he doesn't, not everyone is a HP fan and it's entirely possible that he has no idea how many books there are. I know that I don't follow Daniell Steel (just an example, I know HP is written by Rowling) and so as far as I know there are 100 of those books but I don't know for certain because I don't follow them.

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

Ray R just seems to go on a rant everytime he sees the words "Harry Potter" so no need to dwell on it.

I saw the trailer earlier. Sure as heck doesn't feel like Die hard. For whatever reason, I'm getting more of a Bruce Willis as Jack Bauer in Mission: Impossible 4 vibe.

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

Hammer, good points. I can see what you are saying about character development for McLane but if he develops into just another supercop, why go see the movies? This is why 16 Blocks resonates as a better old-man Mclane movie, to me. I am all for some development in character over a series of movies...to a degree (Did Indiana Jones change much? Did Capt. Kirk?) but to change what made his character unique among action heroes is kind of a let down. Sure, he can be more sure of himself as an older, wiser McLane. But then, do I really need or want to see that?

The bigger point to me would be, if you replaced the character John McLane, could the movie still work? If you say yes, then it really isn't a DIE HARD movie...it is just another action movie. Granted, going on a very thin trailer makes it hard to be sure but if this is any indication of overall movie, it clearly looks like any generic rent-a-cop would do nicely.

As you mentioned, Bourne was a genre busting movie. His character is very integral to the movie and how he approaches things is very important. Methodical, well thought out, serious, subtle, etc. If in the third movie he became a wise-cracking, two-gun shootin' hombre from a John Woo movie, would it still be a Bourne movie? I don't think so.

Speaking of Woo, I would add either THE KILLER or HARD BOILED as another genre busting movie for your list. The style of those movies (back to the lesser known A BETTER TOMORROW) is still reflected in today's action films, though I think the Bourne movie seriousness has taken over. That said, I look forward to HOT FUZZ to change all that with its glorious return to the Woo standard!

I know this is a lot of handwringing but it is mostly for fun conversation. I really am not that invested as the DIE HARD franchise quality dropped a bit with 2 and became a non-player with the 3rd. 4 at most will be a curiousity that I hope is better than it looks.

Enjoy!

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

I always think his character in 16 Blocks is like an older version of John McClane

Love the Teaser, not the kind of thing I'd see in the movie but downstairs in the basement, yikes.

Could it be that I just don't give a flying shit? Harry Potter has no need to be in a thread which has a character which predates him, John "Yipee Kay-Yay Motherfucker" McClane. I tells ya the lady who wrote them books stole the idea from Neil Gaiman's The Books of Magic. But why should I care? I'm only going to care when the overly long book/film series is finished when I get around to watching the rest. Except the first two movies which I watched once. Pffffffffffft... I'm gonna watch them probably in 2015. No more HP in this thread, please!

Has anyone played Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza? I've only played the demo. I wish Samuel L. Jackson would return as Zeus Carver. It's only a teaser trailer.

Mods can we change the title of the thread to "Die Hard 4/Harry Potter Appreciation Thread"?

Hey, I don't give a shit about Harry Potter, either. You started the whole HP discussion in this thread when you went off on your little rant, and even in your "stop it plz!" post you manage to get in a jab or two. I don't particularly care, but if you think HP dicussion doesn't belong in this thread then maybe you shouldn't continue to discuss HP yourself, hm?

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

The teaser does remind me of The Transporter now that you mention it, but then again Jason Statham always reminded me a little of Bruce in those films, he even looked like him from certain angles.

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

OK, so I managed to finally watch Die Hard (yeah, thats right, I've never seen it. I'm a horrible movie buff) and man what a flick. Can't believe the things I've waited this long to watch!

That said, this really does look nothing like the movie I just finished watching. But it is only a teaser, so who knows.

Dude, that's awesome! I wish I could go back and experience the movie for the very first time.

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

It's the best Christmas movie ever.

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

It's funny that both Die Hard and Die Hard 2: Die Harder take place near Christmas but Die Hard: With a Vengeance doesn't. I guess the first two could be considered as the "Holiday Duology" and the last two could be considered the "Summer Duology" due to the time of year they take place. It's also interesting that each subsequent installment takes place in a larger area. Can't wait for it though!

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

What really sucks is that all this talk of the films is making me want to watch them all, but the lamp in my projector blew 2 weeks ago and I can't get a new one until after the 1st of the year because of Christmas and i'll be damned if i'm going to watch these movies on my teeny weeny 25" television.

Actually, Die Hard 3 did take place around Christmas.

There's another clue too, when the terrorist is making small talk with McClane right before they get on the elevator he asks him "So what do you think of this weather this late in the year, indian summer huh?" indicating that it was no longer summer and the hot weather was unusual, plus it typically stays warm outside well through August and parts of September.

Just yesterday we hit 70 degrees here in my area, people were wearing short sleeves and it's December! It may have very well been at least October in the film, despite what the opening song says, I think it was just to set the mood rather than indicate the exact time of year.

Of course I honestly don't really believe that it was as late as December but we just don't know.

I can't remember the context of the quote in the movie, but from your post, it sounds less like an indication of the time of the year, and more of a "Christmas comes early this year" comment - the speaker seems to be saying "You could get away with doing anything (even something as big as stealing City Hall) because all of the cops are preoccupied".

The fact is, the previous films went out of their way to let you know that it was Christmas. If the best you can point to in DHWAV is that line and a line about unseasonable weather, I think it's safe to assume it's not Christmas.

Since the movie opens with the Loving Spoonful's "Summer In The City," I have always assumed it was summer. I like the story better that way.

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

Kids are all in school as well, so it isn't summer, but probably fall. If I remember correctly, leaves were still on the trees in Central Park but there were signs of them on the ground as well, signifying fall. Definitely wasn't Christmas or even close.

Yeah, but like I said it isn't summer in the film because of that exchange between McClane and the terrorist at the reserve, i'm guessing the timeframe is sometime in late August which can still produce days of very warm weather, but that's just my guess.

EDIT: That's right, Jason, the kids are in school in the film, and since it definately isn't Christmas and it's "late in the year", that lands us squarely on September.

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

Well, September is mostly a summer month since it's not offically fall until the autumnal equinox. So if it's September it could very well still be summer.

Re: Die Hard 4 in the works.

I live in New Hampshire so its only right for me to go see the movie when my state motto is in the title.

that said, I'll be there when it comes out, as long as its got big explosions and Bruce Willis kicking ass, I'm so there. I associate the two with each other, Bruce Willis kicking ass which then lead to big explosions.
