I waited as long as I could for an anamorphic release of TCM but could not wait anymore and bought the Pioneer 2003 release two years ago (Oct 2004) while dreading to do so. I'm sooooooooo thankful of this release. I'm all over this one.

Don May Jr, looking at the screencaps of this release You and Synapsefilms did a phenomenal job. I can hardly wait to get it. Thank You.

Agreed on all counts about the quality. This has shot up to my most anticipated release, along with the Superman releases this fall. If anything, it looks like the TCM prequel got us a great TCM DVD, finally.

I just wish Paramount would have allowed Mr. May to do the same with their Friday the 13th boxset (if that rumor was indeed true).

I did indeed contact some of the folks working on the Paramount F13 releases and gladly offered my services. I really wanted to do those. They didn't even bother to return my call.

That's a shame. I've given up on a great Friday box set. Just looking forward to the movies in HD now. I don't think we'll ever get them uncut.

Still very much looking forward to this TCM release, though.

Can't wiat for this. Haven't owned TCM on DVD because of the lackluster transfers on the previous releases. It'll be nice to retire my LD.

Don, with Paramount going re-release happy lately, have you thought about sending a feeler about working on new Friday discs?

Steve,

It looks like Paramount is more interested in throwing out previous discs from catalogue titles with NEW COVER ART!

As opposed to doing full-on revamps of previous editions. IMHO the Friday Boxset released by them is "special" enough for them at the moment. Perhaps when the eventual HD versions get released we'll get a chance at better transfers, not gonna hold my breath though.

Yep, those grabs look fantastic! I wish I had the money to get it before Halloween. I'll have to watch the old one this year knowing that nice new one is out there. Nothing sucks more than that. I've been craving the first sequel for some insane reason. I paid a fiver for it some time ago and it sits unopened on my shelf.

I like the covers from before...the blade and the ground beef. But that new cover fits much much better. I'm hoping it's the "end all" in TCM.

The only real problem I have with Paramount's Friday the 13th set is that half of the films don't have a commentary track. That seems lazy to me. They interviewed a lot of people for the documentary footage, but somehow they couldn't get anyone to record commentary for parts 1, 2, 4, and 5? That doesn't hold water. It's really disappointing for me because parts 1-6 are my favorites of the series and out of those only parts 3 and 6 got a commentary, both of which are excellent. Of course, there is usually always room for improvement and it would be nice if they let Don take a stab at it one day.

Don, did you ever hear anything from Pioneer over the years in response to them using the wrong transfer on their Chainsaw DVD in 1998 and 2003? Did they ever acknowledge the mistake or was it something they didn't talk about? I still can't believe they rereleased that same DVD in 2003 knowing that it wasn't the completed transfer. I guess they didn't care.

My anger was that after pushing the fans off for years... we were treated to the exact same transfers from the previous editions (I think part 4 might have been a bit cleaned up, but I'm not absolutely sure about that. Part 1 has been available uncut in the UK for a while... and we still got the R rated version.

You're absolutely right about the lack of commentaries. Supposedly the director of part 6 had to beg them to let him record one. They were going to just have one for part 3, 7 and 8. He had to go out of his way to get it done for them. That's just ridiculous. If all of the films had commentary then I could forgive it... but I was really let down.

I got it for 40 bucks though, so not too upset about that (I already owned all of the previous ones).

There were a lot of people complaining that the NIGHTMARE On Elm Street set wasn't much better... so people shouldn't whine. That set was released by New Line in 1999... and was considered a great release of the films. Had they released that in 2003-04 people would have reacted the very same way they did to the Friday set. Especially if all 7 of those films had been previously released.

PS, Am so excited about the new edition of TCM that I can hardly wait for it. I've purposely avoided watching my previous Pioneer disc in anticipation of this release.

Yep, part 4 was cleaned up a bit. Also, the individual release of part 4 has some missing audio cues/stingers that are present on part 4 in the box set. One example of this is the opening title card when "The Final Chapter" explodes through the hockey mask with "Friday the 13th" superimposed over it. There are a few other occurances later in the film. The individual release of part 1 included the R rated theatrical cut with two changes. The first death (Annie) was presented uncut while the decapitation of Pamela Voorhees was trimmed even more than the R rated theatrical cut. Part 1 in the box set includes the complete R rated theatrical cut. Annie's death is cut, but Mrs. Voorhees' decapitation is restored to its full R rated theatrical glory. All of the other transfers (2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8) seem to be identical to the individual releases.

I remember hearing about that. What crap! You have to wonder what's going on at Paramount when people volunteer to help them out and Paramount continually acts all disinterested and declines their services.

For those of you with Dish Network HD, Texas Chainsaw Massacre will air three times next Monday (August 21) in glorious 1080i HD, at 10:45 AM EDT, 5:15 PM EDT, and 2:15 AM (actually 8/22) EDT. That translates to 7:45 AM, 2:15 PM and 11:15 PM on the west coast.

By the time the DVD of TCM came out, I had already left my previous company, Elite Entertainment, so, honestly, I didn't really care that Pioneer screwed it up because I was VERY bitter at the time. I wasn't benefitting from any of the Pioneer deal, so their mistake just made it easier for me to get the gig to restore Dark Sky's new version... and I'm extremely happy with the results.

Don May Jr, I have the HD version that was on monsterHD (that you did right?), and that look amazing. I also have the Elite LD, Japanese LD box-set's and other stuff. But when I look at some of the images from the new Dark Sky DVD (on horrordvd site) I think I find some contrast boosting! There where no contrast boosting in the HD version I have. Is this something Dark Sky have done for them self?

Maybe it's just the way the screenshots were captured and are showing up on your PC. The MonstersHD broadcast and the Dark Sky DVD are both based on Don's 1080P transfer.

Yes, I know they are from the same master but Dark Sky can also have made some things too it. Do you see what I mean Vincent? Like the screenshot when leatherface grab the girl, it look to have too much contrast.

Here in NYC there are always these porno shops that get the latest releases and tend to break street. I saw this sitting in the window of one of the ones near my apartment when I was walking home. I only saw it for a minute (I was rushing by) but it looked like there was a slipcover, for those interested (one of the ones that looks just like the dvdartwork underneath).

And semi-off topic, anyone know what's going on with Tobe Hooper's Eaten Alive? I thought it was supposed to come out on the 26th too but it's not listed at Dark Sky's site anymore.
