Possibly, and if they are working on a fix, I will be willing to take any flack for having this initial negative skepticism. However, I do believe they should have issued a statement promptly if they are doing something about the defects. Since they are still selling this as the "ultimate edition" and this thing has been hyped to high-heaven for years as it was going to be the end-all edition, I do think the majority of fans would agree that such an 'ultimate' package should at least include the film with its entire sountrack intact. It even says on the case that the original mono track is included so there is somewhat of a fraud issue here. Maybe not intentional at the time, but they aren't recalling these things and continue to sell them, and I know it has sold a LOT of copies already. Even if they do make a fix, that still means everyone who wants it will probably have to pay for shipping costs to send the disc in for an exchange. Others who don't really care about the sound errors or never knew about them end up just keeping their defective disc and Dark Sky basically sold them faulty merchandise. Personally, I really don't care that much about the $20 I spent, I'm just irritated that we still do not have a good copy of this film on DVD. The image on the Pioneer release was OK for its time, although I always was annoyed more with the shifting artifacts in that transfer than the actual sharpness and clarity of the image, which looked OK. Still, I will definitely choose that artifact-ridden transfer over this sound-mess Dark Sky release any day. If they don't fix it, that probably means this edition will clog up the market for 5-7 more years before there's a chance of someone doing it right.
As for the missing siren-noise effects, someone else posted on DVDManiacs later saying they ARE on all the audio tracks. I can't seem to find my disc right now to check it myself (and, honestly, it wouldn't change my overall feelings on this disc one way or the other). Still, I don't want to spread any false rumors if the siren-effects are indeed on the audio-tracks. So as it stands, the siren effects do seem to be intact unless someone verifies otherwise.
Hopefully for all of us here, Dark Sky will do the right thing eventually so we can truly have an "ultimate edition" of this film.
