SOPRANOS Season 6: Season Finally!!!.. Episode 12: "KAISHA" - Page 32

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

Tell me if I'm dead wrong. I thought the killing scene with Silvio was an homage to Goodfellas. The actor who plays Phil in Sopranos was whacked in Goodfellas in a similar fashion while, "just bustin your balls." In GF, Pesci hits him in the head with a pistol, breaking the pistol and spewing bullets all over the floor. Last night, Silvio hit him with a dust buster, spewing dust all over the floor! They wrap both bodies in a table cloth. Both scenes were 2 on 1 and incredibily violent. The perps in both scenes quickly lock the door after the killing, realizing they have just killed a made guy without a sit down. And, both victims are stabbed repeatedly with a butcher knife. In fact, I think the scene last night is almost a cut for cut copy of the GF scene. And, there currently are 4 GF actors appearing in Sopranos.

Incidentally, I thought that Johnny's wedding scene a few weeks back was an intentional contrast to the Godfather wedding scene. The "No request can be denied on your daughter's weddding day." But, whereas in the GF, the FBI are locked out of the compound and have to take down license plates of the attendees, in Sopranos, they are in the church searching guests, making them take off their shoes. And Johnny, instead of being the omnipotent Godfather, is escorted out in shackles with tears.

I think both scenes are meant to show the bleak reality of today's Mafia, compared with the romanticized version and glory days of the mob past. Times have changed, which has been a persistent theme this season. I too haven't been a big fan of this season, but if I'm right on these two allusions to the greatest mob movies of all time, I can't help but respect David Chase's artistic vision.

Nice catch and contrast re: Goodfellas and the Godfather.

That was the ultimate "touche'" moment for Tony with Dr. Melfi: "you're now complaining that Carmela did for AJ the very thing you hated your mother for NOT doing - protecting the son from the father".

Tony's subsequent talk with AJ was a direct result of this. Compare this with the "talk" outside the police station after AJ's failed attempt at killing Junior. That conversation had Tony at odds with himself in that he wanted AJ away from the life; yet was disappointed AJ screwed up his first attempt to enter the life. Now he just wants him to learn the benefit of hard work. A bit of growth for Tony, not withstanding the bashing in of the windshield.

My impression: AJ would NOT have taken Tony's job offer at all seriously, if he hadn't bashed in the windshield, then said something to the effect of, "don't put me to the test". Also loved the litany of things Tony would take away from AJ if he didn't get off his ass and go to work.

AJ finally got the message.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

This episode seemed to salvage some of the wrongs the past couple of episodes had committed.

I don't know, I still think that after nearly two years it could have been better though.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

It seems to me, most, if not all, that stuff with Vito away from the crew was for nothing. A lot of time was spent on his escapades and then he comes back and whammo ! he gets what we all knew he was going to get.
I mean, I just don't get why we needed a Johnny Cakes detour for the last x episodes.
Not that I minded it, I actually enjoy all facets of the show.
I dont know...his punishment almost seemed anticlimatic because of all this time spent on him. I actually thought something else was going to happen.
meh...oh well.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

a couple of things.....

rumors going around that Phil might be gay. He is very crazy about offing Vito. He had some awkward pauses on his bed with his wife discussing gay people. He yelled to turn the muscle people off of the tv. He gripped his fists when they beat Vito, this is a killer, he never grips.

I think the symbolism of him coming out of the closet was not symbolism meant for Vito, but rather Phil. Chase won't go anywhere with this, but think about it....

Also, if you noticed Carm was stating how beautiful Paris was when she was standing on the bridge, then the scene immediatley changes to Sill stating clean the shit off her tit Big contrast

Did anyone notice the music when Tony was getting blown in his truck while bringing the stripper home?

it looked like he was getting some pleasure from watching it to me, not gripping. he seemed a little TOO happy about it.

Well, we saw that Vito had found a new life for himself, in a place where his lifestyle was accepted, where he could be with a man he loves, living a simpler life and doing a lot of hard work. Ultimately, though, he chose the very real possibility of being brutally killed instead of putting in hard work, on the slim chance that he would be able to go back to his life of luxury and excess.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

True, Mark.
I just thought that the possibility was more of a inevitability (is that a word? ). Like when he returned, I knew he was a goner, plain and simple.
Actually, when he killed mr park and mail, I knew it was over for Vito.

But I understand it worked well as a device to bring Phil in as a threat, among other things to the N.J. boys.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

I'm sorry...you wasted God knows how much screen time devoted to 'the secret life of Vito', just to turn him into a plot device to illustrate how Phil and Tony are coming to odds??

Hmmmm...that's just garbage writing.

True, but to me, that whole story is a waste of time, sure as hell not worth the few hours they spent on it. The writers could of found a better way of bringing Phil and Tony to a war.

I agree Quentin.

Yeah, I got a kick out of that. Nothing like a stripper going down on T to show that he's indeed "back".

Good call on the Goodfellas similarity. The one that caught me last night was how the beating of Vito kinda resembled the beatings of Pesci and his brother(played by Frank Vincent conincidentally) at the end of Casino.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

I don't loathe the Johnny Cakes Storyline like some around here but I agree we could've actually spent that time on Meadow's or AJ's Storyline, but alot hate them around here as well.

IIRC, Frank Vincent wasn't Joe Pesci's brother in Casino. Frank Vincent held Joe Pesci down while Pesci's brother was beaten. Frank Vincent got beaten, stabbed, and shot when he played Billy Batts in GoodFellas.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

What was the meaning of cutting between a sleepless Carm, and a sleepless Phil, before cutting back to Paris the next day? Especially since there would have been next to no overlap due to the time difference.

Favorite line: "I loved him like a brother-in-law" .

Meadow has only been a 1/2 dozen scenes all season.

You sir are correct - I edited my post, I always confused those two. I guess for me the humor came from expecting just "brother".

That's fine. She is awesome, but I can't stand her man.

Re: Tony & AJ

I could be wrong, but I read the scene as AJ's introduction to the business? I thought Tony had finally come to term with the fact that he has to take his son under his wing, so he is starting him off at a probably legit job, but where he can keep an eye on him, perhaps with opporunity for advancement? He treated him like a subordinate who is also family, that's what strikes me the most in that scene. It was reminiscent of a similar scene with Chris at the hospital, before he headed to rehab.

In my opinion, I don't think so. If he were going to do that, he would have gotten him one of the "no show" jobs. Sounded to me like AJ was really going to have to work hard lugging concrete in a wheelbarrow, not a typical job for a Mafia Don's son. I though it was more Tony showing him responsibility and the consequences of flunking out of school, rather than an intro to the life.

Holadem, that may still happen.
I give A.J. about a 1 in 50 chance of straightening out. It's like that quote in Seinfeld about ending relationships, its like pushing over a coke machine (no not Christopher), you can't tip it over in one push, you have to rock it a few times. A.J. still needs to be rocked around a few times before he falls on his face.

What exactly is a "no show" job?

I believe it's what used to be called "featherbedding". The labor unions (sometimes mob-connected) negotiate a certain number of jobs on a job site, in excess of what it really needed by the contractors to accomplish the job. The contractors just price that into the job to keep labor peace (and mob peace), since it's governemnt-funded projects, in many cases.

Those "extra jobs" are "no show" jobs - they get paid for not even showing up. Remember last season, the extra mob guys including Vito who just sat around at the site where Finn was working? I think those guys sitting in lawn chairs effectively had "no show" jobs - b/c they had no work to do.
