Funny how they had to go back to a previous season to get the "best scene" of this season. Best use of a deleted scene ever!

Paulie looking at the wind in the trees outside his "mother's" room reminded me of Tony and the wind in the trees motif of his coma. And of course the ojibwe saying -- "pity for himself"? Paulie?

I don't think that was a "deleted" scene.

It was recreated I would say.

It was a flashback! Looks like Lost is even influencing the Sopranos! ; )

I prefer "Fill-In The Blank Scene".

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

This was about half of a really good ep. I thought the Chris "stoned" sequence/musical interlude went on too long, grinding the show to a halt that it didn't recover from.

That dinner scene was pleasantly uncomfortable. Man, I'd spend all my time in the garage with model trains too if I was stuck with a wife like Janice.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

I'm sort of leaning towards those who really are
starting to dislike the Sopranos, even though we
are riveted to it week after week.

I have been reading this thread regularly, and I
understand that Chase is giving us a show about
a family coming apart rather than a mob drama.
Unfortunately, Chase's vision has made this the
absolute worst season on record thus far. None
of these shows have been especially good.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

Is it me, or did the flashback scene not fit into the episode where they killed adriana timewise...I don't remember it being the next morning, I thought it was like four hours and Chris went straight to Tony after she told him.

I disagree with most people on these boards about this season. I think this is the strongest season storywise since season 2. I guess we have to remember that this is only a little more than halfway through this season. We seem to be treating it like it is a whole season. I have watched every episode twice this season and it just seems there is a lot more imagry going on

Best line of the Year when Tony told Paulie "Brownie Yor Doing a Heck of a Job" I nearly peed my pants!

Man I disagree this has been a great season so far it has the best balance of the Dramatic character stuff and the Mob related stuff, the show is just so well written and it's so much heads and shoulders above so many other shows, it's just in an elite all by itself. If people say it's missing something I cannot see what that is.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

I've enjoyed the show this year but I will say that the narrative of the whole program has changed. Rarely, if ever, do we get a self-contained story or a character arc in the course of a single episode.

Instead, it is either 1) building to a resolution at the end of the season (or the series) or 2) it is just a series of impressionist sequences that illustrate a particular mood or theme. Right now, I am thinking the latter.

Not that I think those of you here who are dissatisfied fit this bill, but I imagine this year is not as satisfying for the "who gets whacked next?" crowd.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

I disagree that none of these shows have been good this year. A few were very good IMHO.

"I don't remember it being the next morning, I thought it was like four hours and Chris went straight to Tony after she told him."

It was early morning. Remember Christopher at the gas station carassing the hood of his Hummer and watching the family get into their car. It was clearly light out by then.

Yet it still makes more sense than continuing to watch if you haven't liked it since Season Three.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

Yeah, the flahsback was a powerful scene. And the time with those two in the episode was necessary and let's face it - that's Tony and his son in reality.

The drug scene at the music did go on too long, but it is realistic that Chris will struggle with his addiction even though he knows he has to be better than that.

Travis

This was really the first ep this season I had any kind of big problem with. I think S6 has been strong and at least on par with S4. The thing missing for me vs. S5 is Johnny Sack. He was such a terrific character and foil for Tony but his presence has been minimal this season, especially the last few episodes. We've barely seen him since the wedding. Phil is fine in support, but he hardly projects the threat level of Johnny. This season is lacking that strong secondary character who can stand up to Tony and frustrate him.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

That scene at the very end was odd. It was like they were saying "hey, remember that time(yesterday) when we got that wine? Yeah, that was awesome..."

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

To me, this season has been made up of episodes that have highlighted individual characters more than ever before. Besides the similar themes that run through all the episodes, there's no major continuing story between each episode (compared to, say, the above mentioned last season where it was Johnny Sack vs. Tony or even the first three episodes this year when Tony was shot and comatose). I enjoy seeing the looks at each character but it is different from previous years.

Let's get a Silvio episode soon!

Lol...yeah. Actually, I even liked this scene more than the flashback scene. It is supposed to be odd. Now, time is always very fishy in THE SOPRANOS, so it could have been 'yesterday' or it could have been a week. That aside, it is a follow up to the flashback. What are they going to talk about? "Hey, remember that time I told you my fiance was a mole, and you realized we had to have her killed?" It's showing how 'the life' eliminates real human contact/communication. These guys are relatives and friends, and that conversation is the best they can do. Really sad.

I think we'll see more of Johnny Sack before it's over; in Ep. 9, Phil cut a deal w/ Tony that cuts out Johnny Sack, so I'd expect that will cause repercussions eventually.

Wow. I am in 100% disagreement. This to me has easily been the strongest seasons since Season 2. All of the characters are seeing a lot of growth. Change and re-evaluation. The feds have withered as they are now re-purposed toward terrorism.

There is something about this season I find almost hypnotic in that we have built on what seem like subtle - but in fact very big - developments for every cast member.

The writing for this season has been dead on; Tony finding value in Carmella so that he can't screw Julliane.

Flat out, Sopranos this year has been a homerun. Right now, I'm down to five hours of TV a week that I don't miss: Sopranos, 24, House, Grey's, Big Love.

My memory may be failing me, but I don't remember Phil being quite as despicable as he's been this season. I really hate his character.

Am I the only one who saw that flashback scene as gratuitous? I saw no need for it. We all knew what had to have happened, and it was exactly as we had imagined it. I would have rather seen new ground be broken.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

Other than the flashback scene, I found this episode kind of boring. For the first time I can remember, I found myself doing other things while watching.

I've really enjoyed this season, but let's all be honest - this could be a show about any cultural, extended family and friends at this point - the mafia is barely factoring in week to week.

I thought it tied into Ade's mother conversation. We knew the Sopranos basement was bugged, and Tony didn't talk there. But there was a conversation between Christopher and Tony about Ade being a spy, and we heard this flashback right on the heels of Ade's mother saying the FBI had come to visit them and accussed Christopher of whacking her and had "startling" information.

I thought it was basically saying: the FBI knows that Tony & Christopher knew Ade was an informant, so they strongly believe that they had her whacked.

And Ade's mother, who confronted Carmella earlier in the episode with those accussations may be right.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

The bug in the basement was inadvertantly removed by Meadow in Season Three. Why didn't they plant another bug? Got me. I think the FBI knows what happened just because Tony having Adriana killed is the most likely scenario.

I think you're reading wa-a-a-a-a-a-y too much into this. IIRC Ade told the FBI that she was going to tell Chris and get him to go along with it. The FBI knows what happened when somebody like this dissapears. They may need the bugs to prove it in court, but they certainly don't need them to know what happened. They know with 100% certainty what happened when Ade disappeared and left her car at the airport. They don't need bugs or anything like that. The only "startling information" the FBI needed for Ade's mom was the fact that she was a snitch.

Bingo.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 9: "The Ride"

I was on the ground with

"Janice, DON'T." from Tony...then next scene. Janice in a neckbrace. She reminds me of my half sister and that is not a good thing.

Chris basically setting himself up for failure with his delusions of having a great family, house, and life. This girl is pregnant, he marries her right away and is buying a huge house. What happens if there is a problem with the pregnancy? Plus, he was obviously still hung up on Adriana by talking about her after asking his new girl to marry him.

I loved the flashback scene and was hoping it would somehow continue to Adriana's death scene. I want to see her actually get shot because I always hated the way it was originally shot.

It looks like Chris is headed towards somesort of melt down and I wonder if the the Feds are going to pin the Adriana thing on him.

I will say that I enjoy the season ALOT, but The Sopranos has lost that element that made me addicted. It just does not have the same feel that seasons 1 and 2 had.

I think that alot of it, for me at least, is that they jump around way to much week to week and don't mix it all together evenly. We go weeks without seeing a character or continuing their arc and it greatly hurts the show.

I would have wanted to see Chris meet his new girl and whatnot...I don't remember even seeing her before the last episode.

Don't get me wrong, it is still one of the best shows on TV and the first 2 seasons are the greatest seasons of television ever, IMO. But, I find myself more hooked on Deadwood than the Sopranos. I looked forward to Deadwood more than The Sopranos 2 years ago and the same would hold true if they had not pushed Deadwood back.

After the next 3 episodes is the show done?

I've loved the Sopranos. I don't need bullets flying every episode, but I feel as the season goes on I need to be drawn to something. There's nothing right now. Even the trailers for the next week have to tease you with something, which turns out to be absolutely nothing.

No, the first half of the last season is done. More episodes are due later this year/early next year.
