I find that fascinating, but apparently I am the only one . In the end, Tony's worse nightmare is slowly coming to life: a corrupt AND inept AJ. If this were some other show, I would expect this incident to serve as some kind of epiphany to AJ, but not on the Sopranos. Meadow has a solid (if hypocritical) head on her shoulders, I suspect AJ's path will be much darker.

Someone said this was another panic attack for AJ, implying there was a previous one? When was this?

He's had at least two: one when he was named defensive captain of the football team for a play he made in the game the previous week; the 2nd was when he put on a uniform at home and was going to go to a military prep school.

I agree, Holadem: the scene between Tony and AJ after he picked him up from jail was heartbreaking. Tony desperately wants AJ to NOT be a hood, or follow him in the business. AJ's "friends" and acquaintances are mostly hanging with him for the novelty of AJ being a mobster's son, and access to Tony's power and money through AJ.

Not a healthy situation from either side.

4 more episodes and we're dealing with.. vito? hahahahaha =). no wonder chase needed 8 more episodes in spring of '07 to deal with everything.

2much looseness.

Perhaps because you like the psychology of the show, which some folks may forget has always been an integral part of the show. It isn't about naked ladies, killings, or turf wars. The show is about the psychology of a current day mobster.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

I'm with you Holadem, I thought this was one of the better "nobody got whacked, what the hell is this show coming to?" episodes. Ditto on all points.

As far as the fireman not being attracted to Vito, I have a couple friends who are gay and their tastes tend to run towards the rolly polly types. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Really no different from Julianna Margulies being attracted to a fairly obese Tony Soprano.

Something tells me if they didn't spend time on Vito, you'd be asking why the Vito story hasn't been tied up in a nice bow. Again, why do you watch the show?

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

i thought of a perfect ending for sopranos. tony goes out to the pool sits down and ends. it's too artsy fartsy. ah well. all's well the ends well and all's not well with sopranos. 2bad. it could've been a great "Italian" tragedy, but turned into a farce by s3.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

The stuff with Vito was a little boring yet funny at the same time. Hard to explain.

I actually felt bad for AJ. It seems his "friends" only talk to him because of his family and who his father is, not because they really want his friendship. He's slow but he seems to be catching on to this.

So judging from the comments above, the next season of the Sopranos is next spring and it will be the last one. Is that correct?

And yet, three seasons later, you still watch...

Btw, my thoughts on how it will end has always involved Tony going out to the pool, sitting down and the ducks finally come back. Perfect ending, IMHO.

They should do a good scene where he realizes this. Like when Tony realized the guys were laughing at his jokes because he was the boss.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

I thought the episode was very watchable. The pace of this season can be slower since it will play out over 20 episodes. I also just kinda figured once we had the first vito episode, then artie, that since it was the last season that Chase was actually trying to give each of the supporting characters a semi-resolution to the issues that have been set up over the past seasons. Meadow and Finn can be added to that group. I imagine there are a couple more in our future.

Vito's duck walk is painful to watch.

Funniest line for me (sorry, if I botch it, memory's not so great) was Tony telling Phil to "let me worry about the political correctness," where politically correct in his world means killing the homosexual for being homosexual. Great irony.

Again I forget, it's been a while, what did the ducks symbolize in S1?

(Patrick and Allen thanks for the clarification wrt AJ panic attacks).

I thought they did? His panic attack at the club wasn't random.

My favorite line of the ep: "Talking to AJ ain't no kind of aphrodisiac, I'll tell you that" .

Agreed! I never really watched ER, but did remember her from that show. For me, a woman who's attractive is even more so when she is assertive and successful, as her character is here.

BTW, it's easy to divide the participants in this thread from those of us who enjoy the show for the psychology, symbolism, etc. vs. the folks who think it "blows" (and other vulgarities and grammatical/spelling/syntax errors) because they don't see enough violence.

Sorry for that little outburst.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

There's always been a divide between the people that watch and Understood that this was a Drama that looks at a Family (That Just happens to be in the Mob) and the Other Half that watch because they think this is a MOB drama. A Goodfellas Lite if you will. From the 1st season on I knew where they were coming from that the mob stuff was a byproduct of the series and not the series main focal point. It was always about how Tony balanced both Families, and every season has handled that fairly well, except probalby Season #4 where there was more Non Mob Family related stories as it focused on Tony's Breakup with Carm. That season alienated the MOB crowd and they've ragged on the series ever since.

The Ducks Symbolized (IMHO) Tony losing his Family

IMO, the ducks symbolized his "family" (his real and/or mob family, they are both a theme in the series). He fed the ducks, he cared for the ducks and he was disappointed when the ducks disappeared. This was the start of his panic attacks in the series and the story of the ducks was one of the first things he discussed with Melfi. Very symbolic, i.e. "having all your ducks in a row", "leaving the nest", "flying south", etc.; all themes of Tony's mental state and the loyalty/betrayal of both his "families".

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

I love that scene. When Tony says "Come look! The babies are trying to fly" and they lazily look, and sulk back to what they were doing.

Another series fav is the moment of peace Tony has with the horse and goat. The look on his face when the goat runs in the barn.

If only Tony had shotgunned the ducks like he did to Tony B., that would've been kool. Or he should have had a stripper from the Bing have sex with the goat and the horse, that would be great writing, like Goodfellas or something. But all he did was sit there with a coupla dumb animals, what's so symbolic about that? Besides, they never told us what happened to the goat, they just left that storyline up in the air.

I was surprised by the negative reactions to the episode as well. Although I have to admit that I do find some of the differences in opinion interesting (even if I think they're wrong. )

'Sopranos' cast members face charges

Quote:
John Ventimiglia, who plays temperamental chef Artie Bucco on the HBO cable hit, was arraigned on Monday on drunken driving, drug possession and other charges after officers spotted him weaving in and out of traffic in Brooklyn.

Quote:
In the Queens section of New York, Louis Gross -- who plays bodyguard Perry Annunziata on "The Sopranos" -- was charged with criminal mischief after a woman claimed that he broke into her home on April 18.

I'm guessing Louis Gross is the big guy who got beat up by Tony for no reason earlier this season.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

kewl =).

as an aside. for those that have the DVDs or seen it via DVDs, are there any special/extras on the first few discs? i netflixed the last disc from each season looking for extras but it is fairly scarce. are there more extras on the first few discs vs. the last disc or is that it?

s1's last disc had a 73min interview with david chase. that was awesome =).

s2's last disc had brief bits and pieces of fluff.

s3's last disc had fewer than s2 of fluff.

s4 and s5's last disc was abysmal. in fact the "special features" menu of s5 is just series index (list&description of episodes) and that's it. that's a "special feature"? man.

The special features are only on the last discs of each set. There's an occasional commentary on the other discs though.

The season finale is running on June 4. There's no new episode on May 28 (I guess) because of Memorial Day.

Not a healthy situation from either side.

I thought the scene was extremely powerful and IMO, Gandolfini was outstanding in it. He was both berating AJ out of anger for pulling this stunt and failing and out of love, not wanting AJ to be like him.

It was like the mob boss and the father in him both coming out at nearly the exact same time, just seconds apart and perfectly highlighting the entire theme of balancing his two lives.

Hey, this season has been great for me.

Funniest bit for me this week was when they're trying to muscle the Starbucks-type corporate coffee shop.

I thought this was good too, but I thought they gave up a bit too fast. I'm not sure if there is much else they could have done, but it just didn't seem very "Capo like" to just give up and walk out when trying to shake down a new business. In prior collections, they didn't care about manager excuses and made them make payments anyway. On the other hand, it may be exactly what is happening in the real world, i.e. family businesses being squeezed out by corporate franchises.

Why the h#11 is HBO doing this? They frickin' played a new episode on Easter Sunday, but they skip the Sunday night before Memorial Day?

And here I thought I'd have the whole season by the end of May.

That was definately the point the episode was trying to make, it's that the old mob is done, finished because corporations are the new Mob.

Easter is a holiday when usually everyone is home with family. Memorial Day is the First "Get Away" vacation time of the summer when everyone is out side and not in front of their Tv's, well I mean everone besides us
