As a New Jersey guy, was Ben Kingsley's accent convincing to you? I assume from your comments, that it did.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 7: "Luxury Lounge"

i've said it and i'll say it again (earlier in this very thread), it's not about wrapping things up. think of those renaissance paintings. some people like homage to classical form, some people don't. i love classical forms of storytelling and we don't get enough of them. chase is not interested in it. he's interested in real life. good for him. i believe that fiction should recall some classical forms that is like a mirror reflecting truths in our lives. chase doesn't want to do that. he wants a window into the sopranos family. no reflections, it's like through the looking glass, just an external participant.

ironically, season1&2 had a TON of classical storytelling structure, but season3 onward threw it all away. i'm going through bonus portions (thanks fo netflix) for all the back seasons and on s2 bonus, edie falco said she'll "NEVER" leave Tony. lol =). very insightful.

i'm actually not in front of the tube watching it. it's off of a recording (so it's a bit sterile . also explained before, but i watch it cause i need to know what happens. i sat through BSG '80 because of that and wasted a lot of time =(. it's one of those obsessive compulsive disorder things. if i WERE normal, i'd've stopped watching sopranos by season3.

This should be clear from the second season on, but some people still insist on demanding it and then subsequently criticizing the creator for not providing it. Chase has repeatedly said he is not interested in wrapping up every little detail; so to keep complaining and yet still continue to watch is an exercise in futility (not to mention self-torture). I guess, it is also a testament to the quality of the show that so many can be so disappointed in one of it's basic concepts and yet still be there in front of the tube every Sunday night.

I swear this is the same discussion we keep having over and over again in the Lost thread.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

It was good to see Tony stay faithful for once. The shooting has made him appreciate (some) things more than he did before.

Melfi called Kupferberg (her psychiatrist) on his own obsession/ rubbernecking with Tony.

Another panic attack for AJ. I loved the stuff with the girl when he was telling her that he was probably going to have to take care of Uncle Junior himself. Then he went and did it like a dumbass. It's good that he's realizing that the status that he has comes entirely from his father's reputation and he's just a clerk at Blockbuster.

Once again, I wonder if we've seen the last of Vito.

Patsy and the store owner's exhange was hilarious:

"The boss is opening up a juice shop!"
"What Jews?"

Obviously not. They've invested too much time and energy in setting up his hide-out in New Hampshire, the characters in the town and the everyone's continuing interest in his fate on the part of Tony's associates for the producers to just drop his storyline in the middle during an episode mostly devoted to something else. Either he's coming back, getting killed or they will make some provision for his permanent escape into a sort of reverse "witness protection program" - either with or without Tony's approval, whether tacit or open.

Joe

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

Everyone said last week how annoying Artie is. After seeing the self absorbed wuss that is Anthony Soprano Jr Artie looks much better. I'm sure I wasn't the only one wanting Tony to beat the daylights out of him outside the jail. By the way, wouldn't the knife have set off the metal detectors that AJ would have had to go through?

The Vito storyline is starting to drag in my opinion. It needs to get resolved one way or the other. Enough already.

This episode had some really good symbolic moments about the gradual loss of power/prestiege that the NJ crew has. Patsy's collections drying up, the real estate agent turning Tony down (at first), etc.

Next week will bring a welcome return of Paulie and Bobby and their selfish pettiness

Me too. He's just not interesting enough to spend so much time on. This is time we could have spent with Bobby, Christopher or Paulie.

"Everyone said last week how annoying Artie is"

Not me, I really liked last weeks show.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

Vito is somewhat of a minor Character, I think what this storyline is setting up is what will become of Tony's Power within his crew because he is failing to act on Vito by taking him down. Of course we all know this is coming later in the season, but will it be done with Tony's blessing? AJ is just a complete waste I would like to see him go down, I think it would send Tony over the edge to lose one of his kids to his dealings and ultimately would force a huge decision in Tony to choose between his two "Families", btw is this season being broken up because we must be nearing the end of the new ep cycle...

Yes I heard 8 more episodes in the fall or new year.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

I simply cannot stand the AJ character. I really wish they would off him because every second they spend on him is time wasted.

I certain hope he never joins the “business” because it would mean that Tony’s insight into people would be off. After all how many times has Tony said the kid couldn’t cut it in the “business”. It would be really dishonest to the viewers if suddenly he became “business” material.

I Could See AJ Buying it due to him tyring to tiptoe on the Edge of "The Life"

Well, Jackie Jr.'s downfall was when he wanted too much from "the life." Like AJ, he was a child of a lead figure and probably had a sense of entitlement regarding his role in the organization. As we remember, it was Vito who killed Jackie Jr. I doubt he'll be around to do anything to AJ. : )

Still, the scene of him snorting coke last night was a shock. To those of us watching since the beginning, he's a little kid.

Question: did he blow all the money he got from the drum set on that bar bill?

That's a key difference between father and son. I suspect Tony was hungry, wanted to succeed, and worked his ass off (or certainly was highly motivated) when he started out "in the business".

The sons (especially AJ and Jackie Jr to a lesser extent) are/were spoiled, not bright, not at all motivated.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

I'm sorry...but, this season blows. Too much wasted time on minor characters with no really interesting stuff to see. Last night felt like it would never end.

I wonder if we will ever see the consequences of Paulie beating the crap out of that guy after Tony promised his mother he wouldn't be hurt??

My wife had a problem with that guy liking Vito. To quote my wife..."Vito's ugly."

I guess she's never watched According to Jim or The King of Queen or witnessed the "Hot chicks marrying trolls" fad that started with Julia Roberts and Lyle Lovett and extended through Christie Brinkley and Billie Joel before descending into self-parody with the Angelina Jolie/Billie Bob Thornton nuptuals. Why shouldn't some gay men have the same kind of bad taste so often exhibited by straight women?

Speaking of looks, Julianna Marguiles looked HOT! I never really thought she was that attractive in the past, but last night changed my mind big time.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

Wow, this episode was really bad. For two straight weeks we've had episodes that focused on Artie, Vito and AJ...all minor characters that when they get entire plotlines devoted to them, the show grinds to a hault. Any epsiode that doesn't have Pauly or Chris in it for more than a cameo is a waste.

On top of that, you're going to have an athletic volunteer fireman fall for a morbidly obese mobster with no personalty? Maybe the fireman is attracted to guys that walk like a penguin?? Seemed totally unrealistic and boring.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

I think the fireman just loves people who compliment on his Johnny cakes.

Re: SOPRANOS Season 6: New this week.. Episode 8: "Johnny Cakes"

Yikes. Once again I am shocked at the (sometimes extreme) negative reactions.

I loved the epsiode, and I usually cannot stand AJ.

You have no idea how powerful the drive to be like daddy can be for the son of an overachiever. For the first time ever, I actually empathized with the kid because I can directly relate to him.

The son desperately wants to live up to dad, even though it's clearly not in him, while the father desperately wants his son to be anything but him -- a very unusual situation for a successful father. I find that fascinating, but apparently I am the only one . In the end, Tony's worse nightmare is slowly coming to life: a corrupt AND inept AJ. If this were some other show, I would expect this incident to serve as some kind of epiphany to AJ, but not on the Sopranos. Meadow has a solid (if hypocritical) head on her shoulders, I suspect AJ's path will be much darker.

Someone said this was another panic attack for AJ, implying there was a previous one? When was this?

I've chalked up all the talk of a New Tony to wishful thinking (people crave seeing tough guys soften up for some reason, check Al in the Deadwood threads...), but the evidence is pretty solid at this point.

Vito's walk is killing me.
