News about future Batman animated DVD's. - Page 2

So "The Batman", which (as far as I know) JUST finished airring its first season for the first time is already getting a volume 1 DVD release

It doesn't sound like a release similar to the "Batman: The Animated Series" releases. It sounds more like the "Teen Titans : Divide and Conquer" release, which was not a complete season. I'm guessing "The Batman" release will be 4-5 episodes on one disc (hence the "Season One Part One" title).

Plus, a "season" of "The Batman" isn't quite as large as a season of BTAS. If they are considering what's been aired so far as a complete season, it's pretty small. According to The World's Finest site (
http://wf.toonzone.net/WF/thebatman/episodes/)
there are 13 episodes in the first season. Only nine have actually aired.

There seem to be quite a few other animated Batman series. How are all these connected?

The current "The Batman" series isn't connected to the previous series at all (and isn't anywhere near as good IMHO).

"Batman The Animated Series" and "The Adventures of Batman and Robin" are essentially the same series. Some of the same episodes have aired under each title. "The New Batman Adventures" is pretty much in the same series as well - they redesigned the characters, but otherwise, it exists in the same "world".

And do the Justice League and Teen Titan series use the same mythology, or is each series a reboot with new versions of the characters?

Justice League is within the same continuity as Batman The Animated Series/The Adventures of Batman and Robin/The New Batman Adventures and Superman The Animated Series. They have even referred to events that occurred in the previous series'.

Teen Titans is totally out there on it's own. Completely different style and tone.

It is in the same world, despite the different style and tone. Batman has made reference to Robin being with the Titans at least once that I know of.

Just out of curiosity, do you know what series and/or episode he did that on?

That doesn't mean the two series take place in the same world. The Teen Titans have been a part of the DC Universe for decades. A reference to them on one of the other animated shows doesn't necessarily mean they are referring to the version depicted in the current show.

The Robin character on Teen Titans isn't anywhere near the character in the other shows. Plus, all signs point to the TT Robin character being Dick Grayson, which would put Teen Titans years before the other DC animated shows' continuity (Dick Grayson started in college on BTAS and was last seen as Nightwing).

For the record, the history is like this:

the show without a real title, simply known to many as Batman The Animated Series; eventually renamed and it's last group of original episodes aired as The Adventures of Batman & Robin; also, there was a theatrical movie, Batman (The Animated Movie): Mask of the Phantasm, plus a direct-to-video film, Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero, and a couple of video games: The Adventures of Batman & Robin, Batman: Vengeance and Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu .

The show without a real title, simply know as Superman The Animated Series was made.

Both shows eventually were merged into an hour long group of an episode of Batman and an episode of Superman or vice versa or two episodes of Batman or two episodes of Superman; there were aired under the title of The New Batman Superman Adventures; a direct-to-video film, Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman.

A spinoff was made titled Batman Beyond; this in itself got a spinoff titled The Zeta Project; there is also a direct-to-video film, Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker.

A separate series called Static Shock had a few crossovers with the other DCAU shows.

Then came Justice League, and that transformed (or ended and a new show took it's place, depending on one's view of the situation), titled Justice League Unlimitd

As for Teen Titans, Krypyo and other future episodes in the DCAU, it remains to be seen. Some of the same creative staff are working on those shows; whether there is continuity, who knows? Teen Titans is particularly weird. All the subtle hints in the show point to Robin as being Dick Grayson under the mask; based on age, size and other factors, if this is the DCAU Dick Grayson, the show is chronologically a prequel to most episodes of Batman The Animated Series.

But... the weird thing is that Scott Menville, the voice of Robin in the Titans series, also provided the voice of what is clearly the Tim Drake version of Robin in the video game Batman Rise of Sin Tzu. Also, in an episode of Static Shock, when Batman met Static alone, unlike a previous crossover adventure together, and thus Batman was asked where Robin was. He responded by saying that Robin was with the Titans.

I believe it was a Static Shock episode where Batman made an appearance. I believe it was called "Hard As Nails". It was the second Bats appearance on the show. Static comes to Gotham. And while in the Batcave. Static asks where Robin is. And Bats responds with the Titans quote. He then makes a comment something about that Static might meet them eventually.

That's correct.

Also (back on to the TT/BTAS continuity question) that Static Shock episode aired before the Teen Titans animated series began it's run and the Robin in question at the time would have been Tim Drake, further breaking any possible continuity between the two current DC animated universes (well, three, I guess, if you count The Batman).

At TrekBBS, Jojirob posted the following (at http://www.trekbbs.com/threads/showf...=5&o=7&fpart=1):

(Beware spoilers for Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker!)

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Quote:
Batman : What--what did the Joker do to Tim?

Older Bruce : More like, what didn't he do? A regimen of pain and sick mind games, just like you'd expect. The kid held up like a champion. Just not forever.

Batman : What broke him?

Older Bruce : Joker placed him in a VR Sim. Tim thought he was in this alternate world. An anime pastiche of his and Dick's lives, punctuated by absurd humor and Dali-esque landscapes, straight out of an old Betty Boop cartoon.

Batman : My God.

Older Bruce : And it had a half-Japanese theme song.

There was a Justice League Unlimited "before" the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited shows. Members included an older Superman (visible gray/white hair); Big Barda (of New Genesis); a Green Lantern (none of the ones we know), and a few others.

This JLU appeared once, on a two-part Batman Beyond episode. Superman recruits Bruce's protege to help him find the traitor within the JLU. Turns out the traitor is none other than Superman himself: a Superman wearing a mind-controlling starfish that has plans to take over the Earth.

They didn't call the critter "Starro, the Starfish Conquerer", but it was clearly a somewhat less over-the-top version of him. And it had come to the Fortress as part of the Preserver's zoo collection from Superman:TAS "The Main Man".

They were going to do a JL/TT crossover episode, but they couldn't decide which show to do it on so it never happened, which is probably for they better since it would have totally messed up the continuity then.

Great news!

I'm even more excited for this set than for the new movie. Hoorah!!!!
So does this cover both the original Animated series and the New Adventures Eps? I seem to remember there wer equite a few of New Adventure eps I never saw including one with Jonah hex.
Does this set finish off the original series, then? How many other series have there been? The only one I can think of is the "New Adventures". Anyone know how many eps of that exist?
Dave,

This set doesn't touch the TNBA episodes. I think this would leave one Batman Animated episode, then the rest of the TNBA episodes if the specs are correct. There were 24 TNBA episodes all together.

While this set has some of my all-time favorite episodes, I am a bit disappointed by the bonus features. The first set was pretty slim in terms of extras, but the 2nd was a big improvement, so I'm surprised to see WHV opt for a lower amount of bonus material for the 3rd set. There's something called BTAS: The Collector's Edition that's coming out later in the year, so hopefully that will make up for this somewhat sparse release.

I'm also wondering what happened to Superman: The Animated Series. It looks like we'll have to wait for BTAS: Vol. 4 for STAS: Vol. 2. Still waiting on Justice League/Justice League Unlimited and Batman Beyond sets too.

only one more set to go and Batman is complete!

Great news!

I've never heard of that. What is it? Is it going to be the same episodes as on volumes 1-3?
I guess fewer special features were done so that the DVD could be released earlier. I don't mind, because now I'll be lucky enough to have DVD commenatries for my two favourite episodes of Batman: The Animated Series (Harley and Ivy, Read My Lips). I love the choices that the creators of the show have made for which episodes to do commentary on. Sure, more commentaries would be nice, but we should be grateful even for the little that we get.

The Jonah Hex episode is Showdown (written by Bubba Ho-Tep's Joe Lansdale, btw), which should be on this third set. I think what you mean is the Batman & Robin episodes, because the New Adventures were the ones produced for Kids WB with the revamped character designs.

I too have not heard of the CE version. Is this just internet rumor or is there something substantial behind it?

Has there been any rumblings on when or if they might release Batman Beyond on DVD in volume sets like they are currently doing with Batman: The Animated Series...?
Batman Beyond?

Maybe we'll hear some good news on that after Batman: The Animated Series - Volume Four comes out towards the end of the year.
That set has some of my favorites - the 2 Ventriloquist episodes,Bane plus Second Chance.

This should leave only The New Batman Adventures, (probablly due with the DVD release of Batman Begins)

Don't forget about the WHV chat tomorrow night here at HTF. If you have questions about any/all animated DC DVDs, save them for tomorrow night! I'm hoping to see a big crowd of us animated DC fans in there!

Which was totally pointless because WB had no reps from their animation dept there. Very dissapointing.

Does anyone think there's a chance that the old Filmation Batman series - you know, the one with Casey Kasem as Robin - will get a release at any point ? It must've been roughly the same time period as SUPERFRIENDS, wasn't it ?

I too wish they'd release all the Filmation DC superhero series, including Batman and Superman, but I doubt DC has worked out any rights issues with whoever currently owns the Filmation library as far as possible release of the shows is concerned.
