That's the problem. Chris Carter wrote himself into a corner on this one. People would naturally wonder how Mulder and Scully went from on the run to back in the FBI with all forgiven. You can't just pick up like nothing ever happened unless the movie will be a prequel. Think about it this way, Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The thing that got so frustrating with the X-Files in later seasons was that you could tell that the writers just made up the mythology stuff as they went along. The fact that they had to spend an hour of the finale explaining everything is proof of that.

I'm all for another X-Files movie but why does it have to have anything at all to do with the TV series? Why can't it just be an exciting/scary adventure with some new character development from Scully and Mulder?

Not may people were watching the series near the end so there would most likely need to be some explaining to do get people up to speed. However most everyone is familiar with the basic idea of the series so no explanations would be needed. Just have Mulder and Scully still with the FBI and solving strange cases. I know I'd be all over a series of movies like that.

Looking forward to this movie, in whatever form it comes in. The only thing is that this franchise was built, and destroyed by its fans. Similar to Star Trek in a way that most of the rabid fanboy fanbase will not ever believe the franchise will ever produce anything good again. Ofcourse those not into the show but might want to see the movie will hear of all the negativety and just stay away. This movie has about as much chance of succeeding as Star Trek: Nemesis did.

And that's a shame. Also, you can say whatever you want about X-files' later seasons, but the show was always progressive. The more I hear of people wanting X-Files to just stay the same, the more I just want to roll my eyes.

Personally, I'd like to see the new movie have both the monster of the week bits and the conspiracy at the same time.

I would have liked to have seen Doggett and Reyes continue the show while leaving Mulder and Scully to theatrical films. It could have worked out like "Star Trek: The Next Generation" airing while films with the original crew were released. The show was called "The X-Files", not "The Mulder & Scully Show", and the two new characters gave the show a new life. Of course, they didn't live up to Mulder & Scully, but Doggett only had 2 years to grow and Reyes had just a little over a year, so the bottom line is this: we'll never know whether or not they would have been able to keep the show running, but I believe that it was looking promising. They certainly weren't the Coy and Vance versions of Mulder and Scully. They were unique characters in their own right and it's a shame that more people don't appreciate them, and let's face it, Mulder & Scully were sort of becoming tired by the sixth and seventh season. I love the characters of Mulder and Scully. They deserve credit for the phenomenon "The X-Files" became. However, I believe that an eighth and ninth season with full-time Mulder & Scully would have been worse than what we got with the introduction of Doggett and Reyes. I look at other shows like "Law & Order", "CSI" and "Star Trek" that have started franchises with various spinoffs that share nothing but the basic premise and I feel that "The X-Files" had a lot more life left in it. As for the "monster of the week vs. mythology" debate on the movie, I think mythology is the only way to go. The casual fans may like MOTW-type stuff, but if you're a casual fan you haven't seen every "X-Files" episode by definition so there are tons of unseen "MOTW" adventures that can be "discovered" by watching reruns. Those of us who have seen every single episode of "The X-Files" are the ones who patiently waited for the few mythology episodes that aired during each season and now that the show is no longer being produced, our only chance to experience the "X-Files" mythology is to wait for new movies. If we're lucky, the new "X-Files" movie will be out next year. That will mark a 4-year period from the last time we saw any "X-Files" characters. Does it really make sense to feature the characters in a throwaway story when it's been 4 years since we last saw them?

I like the episode were Dogget was shot, and died, and then an Indian Shaman barfed up copious amounts of beige liquid into a pit, liquid which formed into the body of Dogget, and thus, Dogget was resurrected. And then the next week, during some subway moster episode, he was back to doubting the supernatural, having to make yet another leap of faith and trust Dana Scully.

Granted, this was always a problem in the Mulder and Scully episodes in the earlier seasons as well, but it was just so extreme in the Dogget episodes (dying and being resurrected by a barfing native is a bit out there) that the whole formula became ludicrous.

The real issues with seasons 8 and 9, though, were more problematic than that -- Dana Scully had nowhere to go as a character. She was the Voice of Science, the Doubter, the Ying to Mulder's Yang. In Seasons 8 and 9, she was asked to basically play the Mulder role with Dogget playing the Doubter and Voice of Reason. Her journey as a character was from the Skeptic to the Believer. Once she became the believer, she was no longer as interesting to watch.

Personally, I think the problem with the later seasons is that the writing became sloppy -- in addition to the myth arc becoming too convoluted. I watched the show when it first aired (and again on DVD) and I noticed a slip in the quality of the writing from season 5 onward, with each season getting worse. By seasons 7-8-9, the show was either sloppy or incomprehensible. Still, if a second movie could harken back to the days of seasons 1-2-3-4 (or the best parts of seasons 5-6), it could be a great film.

As for story arcs that go for years, they often get too confusing. I think that's because the writers are making it up as they go. It's clear to us now that Chris Carter, et. al., did not have an end or a resolution in mind when the X-Files began and had no idea how they'd resolve the myth arc. Of course, one place such an arc did work was on Babylon 5, but there the 5-year story was plotted in advance. Much like the X-Files, Alias is a show that is making it up as it goes along now, and the show stretches credibility and becomes more convoluted every week.

I didn't see any threads about this when I searched, so I thought I'd start a thread. I saw this news:


Now, admittedly, I hate this show. The premise wore thin after the third season, and by season 5 or so, it became pretty clear that they had no idea what they were doing anymore. I stopped watching around the time Robert Patrick showed up. So why am I starting a thread for a movie about a TV-Show I hate?

So what's your opinion on this one? It's not like their's a giant buzz around X-Files as a property. I'm guessing:

20th Century Fox is desperate for a new franchise, seeing as X-Men is pretty much done and their other superhero films kinda sucked (Elektra, I'm looking at you kiddo.)

David Duchovney and more so, Chris Carter really need to generate heat.

I can't imagine that Chris Carter has been sitting on a great idea since X-Files wrapped up, that he has to make this movie now. He would of rolled the dice on that idea 4 years ago.

I mean this in the most respectful way possible but you guys are nuts. Doggett ruled and S8 was the most consistently best XF season since the fourth season. However, my guess is that you're not going to see Doggett or Reyes in the sequel anyway.

Personally, I think the creative people are making this movie because they miss the XF universe and, of course, they want a big paycheck. Fox probably wants it because it'll be a medium sized budget sequel that will generate more money for them.

I'm with you Travis. Hell, I even enjoyed S9, the last few episodes where great, and I loved the shows finale episode!

I believe Chris Carter said that the new movie would take place around S3, so any continuity problems with the TV show would be non-existent, i.e. Mulder & Scully still work on the X-Files etc. However, personally I would rather see a movie take place after the events of S9, with Mulder & Scully on the run, and the clock ticking away until the alien invasion...

There's a great film in there somewhere, but it's probably to complex for the general audience, most of which have probably forgotten many of the plot details of S9.

Heck, I was religiously an X-Files fanatic up until the first movie, but haven't really seen anything beyond that. Needless to say, when I tuned in for the series finale I was completely lost. Any movie made now needs to avoid the mythology arc if it wants to find any audience, IMO.

That makes sense. They've been planning on making this a Monster of the Week all along and I'm sure they want to avoid referencing the last seasons of the show when they started hemorrhaging viewers.

Same here, but i watched until Duchovny left the show. I did see a few after, and wow they were bad! The worst one was one of the last. The Brady Bunch house!!! I was also lost with the last episode, but it seemed to be 50% clip show anyway. The mythology is really what killed the show with the fans, to many contradictions. You can only change your mind so many times. But if the movie is a "monster" story i am in! Those are the best episodes of any season.

Yeah, they don't even need to make a big deal of it either, since the X-Files uses timestamps, all they need to do is just put the date and "1995" in the corner of the screen, most of the audience won't even notice and the hardcore fans will be happy.

Travis i love the show almost as much as you. But one year Mulders sister is a clone, then she is raised by the CSM. Thats the first one that comes to mind. How many times did CSM look like he was dead, same with the guy who was an FBI agent...cant think of this name now. The one who had the black oil inside, only to show up later. Mulder always wanted to kill him, but never did. How about one year Mulders sister was abducted by aliens, only nope it was the government, or was it? Was she a clone, and alien, or a government experiment. Make a story and stick to it. Mulder believes, then he doesnt, then he does. Skully never does, then she does, then she does'nt. Biggest thing is it never pays off. The movie was gonna be the big story, finally we find out what is going on...nope...it doesnt tell us squat. Cept a bee can live hours in your coat, and mess you up just as you wanna kiss.

None of those things were presented as definitive answers to the characters or audience though. The reason why it wasn't presented as THE answer was so they could have room to make up more stuff as they went along and while that's annoying, it's not contradicting anything.

Talking to a friend of mine today, scuttlebutt at Shore Leave is that the movie would be a prequel of some sort.

The main hangup with the movie is the lawsuit between Chris Carter and Fox.

Personally, I think the show has run its course.

I'll see a new movie when it comes out. That said, I think the show was brilliant for its first three years, pretty good in its fourth, but in the fifth year, the strains of the show on the cast and crew were showing. They didn't look like they wanted to be there, and very often the show would be played for laughs. Season 6 was just okay but the 7th was the bottom for the show. Eight and nine weren't that good, despite the new cast members. By the time the 6th season rolled around, scientific explanations weren't even attempted anymore.

If they do it. Stay aware from the alien conspiracy. Do a good monster/freak story (similar to Tooms or Home) and you have a hit.

I was a huge fan of the X-Files back in the 90's. I miss the show, but I agree with others here that the first few seasons were the best with a preference for the spookier stand-alone episodes.

I'll be in line for a new X-Files movie, if it appears.

The main idea behind sequels is to generate money. Why people continue to dump on studios/producers/actors for doing this is beyond me --- they had fun working together before so why not try it again?

And yes, its been said nearly million times now since the 90s, the series was fairly weak after season 4 or so. I'd still like to see what they can come up with after 5+ years of no Mulder and Scully.
