Way ahead of its time.

I always thought that the Academy should now bestow some kind of honorary Oscar for the visual effects work in Tron. It's been said that the film's visual effects were ruled ineligible for recognition because using computers was considered "cheating" at the time and yet it went on to become one of the pioneers of modern visual effects. Of course, it will never happen.

IMDB doesn't show Tron 2 to be released until 2011. Bummer.

From the article it looks like they're aiming for late 2010.

3) Shooting TR2N will be a "twenty-four month" process, but Kosinski's already been at it for a while now. He didn't give me an exact date, but he seems confident that the movie could be ready for late 2010.

Tron 2 Plot Synopsis And New Title

Quote:
When Disney debuted test footage from their impending, long-awaited sequel to Tron at Comic Con, it came with the rather lame title of Tr2n. The good news is that it seems they’ve come to their senses and decided to call it something else. The bad news is that they’re calling it TRZ.

At least I sort of knew what Tr2n meant. You see that and you think, “oh they’re making a Tron sequel and they’ve given it a horrible, MySpace/Text Speak title”. When you see TRZ on a billboard, you’ll have absolutely no idea what it means. Well done Disney, you’ve accomplished something truly incredible. You’ve made the title worse. Luckily, there’s still plenty of time to change the title again.

The new title comes courtesy of the latest, jam-packed edition of Production Weekly, where they also have a brief plot synopsis for the film. Here’s what they think it will be about: “After being transported into the surreal landscape of a mainframe computer to destroy an intruder (Tron), a programmer finds himself allied with the leader of a rebellion against a corrupt cyber-entity.”

Read that synopsis carefully and you’ll get a few important clues as to what TRZ may be about. In the first movie a programmer named Flynn (Jeff Bridges) is sucked inside the computer to be destroyed. In the sequel, it sounds like the computer is bringing a programmer inside to help defend it. The test footage from Comic Con hinted at the possibility that Jeff Bridges might be playing the bad guy, an evil computer entity in the sequel. If that’s the case, it might actually make sense for a digitized Flynn, once a computer programmer himself, to bring in another programmer to aid him in fighting off rebels led by his once friend, Tron. The title may be awful, but as a story this is really starting to sound good.

Hmm not good changing the title.

Re: Tron Remake in the Works at Disney

AUGH, no! TR2N was bad, but you could at least figure out the gist. What, I ask, is wrong with just plain "Tron 2"? Tron fanatics like myself would eat it up and the rest of the world would go to see it because it HAS to be good -- it's a sequel! (Using the general movie-going public's logic).

"TRZ". Bleah! Well, there's been a lot of flux already about this film, maybe they'll come to their senses and change it again.

At least Lisberger is on board now. Yay!

cheers,
Phil

Re: Tron Remake in the Works at Disney

Can't they just call it Tron 2.0? I know the PC game already used that, but it's not like people are going to get confused...

'Tron' sequel lands lead

Disney has picked up-and-comer Garrett Hedlund to star in "Tron," the studio's sequel to the 1982 cult classic by the same name being directed by Joseph Kosinski.

SCI FI Wire: Olivia Wilde reveals a few secrets from Tron, with a blast from the past.

speaking on Tuesday, Jan. 6, at a press day in Los Angeles to promote the new episodes of House, Wilde declines politely to answer other questions about her character, her character's name, how her character will be realized, etc. But she has a few things to say, and we've excerpted her exclusive interview with SCI FI Wire below.

Quote:
Your character has been described as someone who works in the virtual world to defeat the Master Control Program.

Wilde
: I can't confirm or deny that. I tell you, it's not a great description. I don't know who made it up. Someone's grasping for straws there. But ... I'm so excited I wish I could just unload the whole thing on you.

Can you tell us your name?

Wilde
: I can't!

Did you shoot while wearing a motion-capture suit?

Wilde
: I can't tell you that either. I'm so sorry. ...

Will you be shooting against green screens?

Wilde
: They're going to build a huge amount of the set. The director, Joe Kosinski, has made some unbelievable commercials. People can check out his Web site. He's just a really talented guy. And he's a really big fan of using as much sets as you can, because he's an architect as well, so he likes to build these worlds. And with something like Tron, I think it helps to create the environment as much as possible without too much green screen so that these characters can exist within this world, ... with the feel ... as real as possible.

That does sound counterintuitive.

Wilde
: Doesn't it? I think, for a lot of the characters, the world of Tron is their only world, and they don't know anything beyond it, and creating a world of Tron that is as intricate and solid as possible kind of helps that along. And I think it's interesting, because it means that when they ... actually created us a set, they can be as ... detailed, and they can use reflections of things. ... Once you get into the world of CGI, it's ... more difficult.
A certain amount of it will be CGI, of course, I think; it's hard to make a lot of the fun toys real. Unless he wants to spend $50 billion on it, which is fine with me.

Do you get to ride a light cycle?

Wilde
: [squeals] I can't tell you!!! But I want to! I want to! I'm afraid I'd be murdered before I left the building [laughs]. It's really , really exciting. I know the fans will be really happy with what they're creating.

Re: Tron Remake in the Works at Disney

I started to watch Tron on TV once but I turned it of. It looked really corny and hooky. But then again I'm not much of a Sci Fi fan.

Re: Tron Remake in the Works at Disney

Well it is very corney and hokey by today's standards. Back in the day though it was jaw dropping state of the art. And it developed a legion of fans. If they can make the sequal have the impact today that the original did in it's day, then that will be quite something.

Tron panned and scanned on tv is probably not the best way to watch it for the first time.

Ugh ... probably straight to DVD. Maybe if this idea came out two years after the first, but now ... the magic just isn't there anymore.

Upcoming Film Scores: Daft Punk: Tron 2.0

Quote:
French electronica duo Daft Punk has been signed to write the original music score for Tron 2.0, Walt Disney's upcoming sequel to the groundbreaking 1982 animation cult hit which was scored by electronic music icon Wendy Carlos. Daft Punk's members Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter have been involved in various films before, but Tron 2.0 will be their first complete feature film score. The film, scheduled for a 2011 release, is helmed by Joseph Kosinski and will feature Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett. According to industry news reports, Tron 2.0 will play as the "next chapter" after the first film, with Wilde starring as one of the heroes trying to help fighting the Master Control Program, the evil intelligence protocol that was the nemesis in the 1982 film. The assignment of Daft Punk to score Tron 2.0 has been confirmed to Upcoming Film Scores by Walt Disney Pictures.

Preview: Serinda Swan Casts a Spell as Smallville's Zatanna - Today's News: Our Take | TVGuide.com

TVGuide.com: And for those people who like what they see on Smallville, where can they next see Serinda Swan? You're in the Tron 2.0 movie now in production?
Swan: Yes, I am! Obviously the original Tron was a very influential movie for its time, so to be a part of the second one is very exciting.

Quote:
Swan tells TV Guide that she along with the already cast Beau Garrett and Olivia Wilde "play temptresses from inside the computer world. We’re sort of the main guy’s go-to girls."
She adds that her costume is quite unique - "There are lights actually sewn into our wardrobe, so it’s like nothing you’ve seen before."
