Dead Like Me cancelled - Page 3

Reports this week are that the WB has taken a pass. Dead Like Me is now dead.
Maybe it is, but this is the spin from The Futon Critic:
Quote:
DEAD LIKE ME (Showtime) - MGM executives have confirmed the company is looking into syndicating repeats of the recently axed Showtime drama to other cable networks as well as local stations across the country. Any deals however are secondary to finding a new first-run home for the series, which MGM says is still a very real possibility. "We're now talking to basic cable networks about moving it, and we ultimately will syndicate that," Jim Packer, MGM's executive vice president of television distribution for North America recently told Multichannel News. "It's a model that we are very comfortable with." To date, 30 hours of "Dead Like Me" have been produced.

Well, that's better news!

Great news! I shudder to think what the WB would have done to Dead Like Me.

Rats. This series has become one of my favorites. Although, I do miss the Noxema girl from the first season. What ever happened to her after she made the big jump? Will we ever know?

Actually, I hope we never know, since we know that even Rube doesn't know what is out there. If we dis learn, it will be from some mysterious "beyond the grave times 2" type of thing, which I most likely wouldn't like. One great aspect of the reapers is that they do not know their place is the cosmic universe and do not know what/when the next journey is.

I wouldn't expect too much out of this syndication talk. Season 2 of Jerimiah has yet to materialize in the US, and that's another MGM/Showtime co-production.

I don't know, but that actress can't seem to hold a job - she got kicked off of Firefly too (they recast her before they'd finished the first episode). Maybe it was just bad luck.

Meanwhile back to the subject at hand, I really really hope someone buys Dead Like Me, and would have welcomed the former home of Buffy and Angel as a perfectly suitable place for it, but if they're too chicken sh*t I am still very much looking forward to the DVDs of season two.

Do you think HBO would make an offer for "first runs"? or do you think they wouldnt bother cause it wasnt "HBO Original Programming"
Feed up with Showtime. Just called to drop it.
Jean D, IMO HBO wouldn't OK DLM RE: the reason you gave.
Showtime is really hurting. They canned DLM and QAF is not going on past this season. Killing off DLM after 2 seasons shows why they will never be more than a second-rate HBO
post #73 of 163
I got an email today from Showtime. Seems they are promoting a big DEAD LIKE ME marathon.

Seems like a lotta nerve, considering they axed it. I just wonder if there is "between the lines" hope they may bring it back.
Don't count on it.. most of the stars are already working elsewhere now.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

Well I just heard about DLM on Sci-Fi. I gather this is just syndication of the first 2 seasons. Any more news on reviving the show. I still think it went before it's time. Someone messed up and gave a post-it with DLM on it, too early, by mistake.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

Since I have recordings of the original, I plan on checking out the SciFi version just to see how they "sanitize" it for broadcast. (bleeps, voice substitutions, or seperate broadcast versions)

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

Been having a blast watching it on HD NET. I didn't see the original run, but this show is just too off center not to love. I think Laura Harris is just plain gorgeous.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

A friend just lent me the complete series on DVD. I've also been watching on HDNet, and at first I just picked up with the first unaired S2 episode and went through to the end. But then I went back and started over with the pilot and watched both seasons all the way through again. What a great show. I'm sorry it was dropped, because there were so many intriguing mysteries left unresolved. (Like why George is different than your normal dead person and reaper.) The extras are also terrific, especially the gang commentary on the pilot.

The show is just so smart, the writing, the production design and especially the editing so brilliant. And, of course, the various deaths are so - creative.

And yes, Laura Harris is a knock-out.

Joe

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

I hate that there are only 2 seasons as well.

The boss at Happy Time I think is just hysterical. Jasmine Guy as the badass Policewoman. Mandy what can you say.

The parts of the show I love/hate because they seem so real are with Mom/Reggie. I think the young girl Britt McKillip is superb at playing that role with a surprising depth for such a young actress.

Her fellow actors agree with you. Cynthia Stevenson says much the same thing about her and so do several other cast members on the commentary track and in the 2nd season documentary.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

Does anyone know what Ellen Muth has done since then?

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

It appears she hasn't done anything since DLM.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

This is premiering on the Sci-Fi channel on Tuesday (July 18). I'm looking forward to it as I never subscribed to Showtime when the show was on, so I'm glad that it's found its way to basic cable. I just hope there won't be too many edits.

An awful lot of "fucks" and "blow-jobs" are probably going to go by the wayside. (And take a lot of Daisy's character with them. )

Still, the show will probably fare better than, say, The Sopranos, which will probably end up a half-hour sitcom by the time they trim the violence, bleep the foul language and pixelate every background shot at "The Bing".

But you really should do the show justice and yourself a favor: Check it out on Sci-Fi to see if it is at all appealing, then rent the DVDs and enjoy the original uncut episodes (and the extras.)

Joe

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

It seems mighty strange for someone to go from lead in a program to doing absolutely nothing for two years.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

I heard a rumor (source unremembered) that she was a very "high maintenance" actress.

She's young, and reportedly very smart. She also comes from money. So maybe she decided to go back to school, or take a job with one of the family charities for ahwile or just decided to retire

If that were enough to keep someone from working, Hollywood would be a very different place, and you'd never recognize most of your favorite primetime shows. (And Desperate Housewives probably wouldn't have been made at all. )

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

I heard a rumor (source, my fantasies) that she was Kristine DeBell's daughter.

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

I loved that show SO much - I thought it was absolutely a great balance of dark humor and real, I don't know, emotional heft. All around fabulous. SIGH.

I still have not forgiven Showtime for yanking this, even if they do have "Weeds".

Re: Dead Like Me cancelled?

I'm glad to see that someone (Sci-Fi) is keeping the memory of DLM alive. I have no reason to watch since I own both seasons on DVD, but I do know a lot of people that I have recommended the series to who still have not checked it out. Hopefully the airings on Sci-Fi will introduce the show to a lot of new fans. Who knows, it could be the very thing which resurrects the show like Fox did Family Guy and Comedy Central has done with Futurama
