Except that many of those films from the 40s and 50s were good films, whereas Pearl Harbor is an appalling disaster. Pearl Harbor may have borrowed the basic formula (although its real model is Titanic), but it couldn't borrow the good writing, good acting, and good direction of those early pictures.

I will never see the difference there to me its the same style of writing and melodramatic acting. Also many of the same things were said by critics about Tora! Tora! Tora! that many people here seem to think is some masterpiece. I will usually take an older film anyday but I'm not so sure here. Tora! Tora! Tora! film was ripped on for having bad pacing, scripting and mediocre acting. Typical reviews were: Roger Ebert: * out of ****. Leonard Maltin: **1/2 out of ****. It is certainly more acurate but is still not a very good film. I'm convinced that peoples dislike of Pearl Harbor stems more from their hatred of Michael Bay more than anything else.

Not so. I think the criticism of bad acting and scripting in "Tora! Tora! Tora!" isn't warranted, and as far as the pacing goes, I think it's flawlessly done in terms of giving us the necessary backstory leading into the attack before the event actually takes place. I felt that way about this film long before I saw "Pearl Harbor" and when I saw the latter, my dislike had everything to do with it's wretched use of an approach that James Cameron had previously done to very bad effect in "Titanic" (a movie I also hate, and which pales before a good telling of the story like "A Night To Remember").

Films that stick to a greater historical accuracy when telling the events of what happened ultimately get extra credit for me in terms of their quality as a film. The real problem IMO is when critics like Ebert, who embrace a piece of dishonest history telling like "JFK" as a magnificent movie for instance, decide that those standards of historical accuracy don't count for anything in the telling of a story.

You'd be wrong as far as I am concerned. My hatred of Michael Bay is BECAUSE of the trash that was Pearl Harbor, not the other way around. I have never liked any of his other ADD-ridden films either but none of those warranted hatred on my part.

I do not like Spike Lee as a person at all, but I still admire his films (and even own one!).
