Six classic gangster titles featuring the likes of Humphrey Bogart and James Cagney will debut in January available individually ($19.97 SRP each) or as part of a box set collection ($68.92 SRP).

The titles are: Angels with Dirty Faces, Little Caesar, The Petrified Forest, The Public Enemy, The Roaring Twenties and White Heat. Now, that's what I'm talking about! I think 2005, is going to be a great year for dvd releases.

White Heat

It looks like WB wants to be studio of the year next year too!

Oh, wow. I've been waiting years for White Heat. And I haven't even seen three of these movies, but I've definitely been wanting to.

But...Mother of mercy! Is this the end of my wallet?

Not for $68.92 SRP for six movies, it isn't. Shopping on-line will presumably bring this one in for under $50, maybe even in the low 40s. On the other hand, who cares? Warners has kicked so much ass with their classic box sets--Legends Collection, Noir, Hitchcock, just to name the ones I own--that I'd gladly pay noticeably more than that.

Next to the Lewton Collection this will be my most wanted release of the year.

yes ahaha!!!

Every single one of those titles is a must-have! Definitely I'll go for the box. I hope more Cagney follows soon thereafter.

Holy Crap!! not a dodgy pick in the entire set! I can not wait for this!! Good chance of an UNCUT Public Enemy, based on the Robert Harris interview posted on the digital bits!

Thank you Warner ! I was expecting a Cagney collection with the 4 Cagney titles, but Little Caesar and Petrified Forest are a great addition to the collection. Can't wait !

These Warner box sets are making me go broke

I can hardly type, through the tears in my eyes. This is more than I had hoped for....speechless.

Simply breathtaking!!! These are marvelous news!!!!

Just after a month and a week of 2005 and WB have gave us 12 grand classics on dvd: The Letter, Ivanhoe, Random Harvest, King Solomon's Mines, Public Enemy, The Roaring Twenties, Little Caesar, The Petrified Forest, White Heat, Angels with dirty faces, Broadway Melody and The Life of Emile Zola!!!!

I keep on thinking if the rest of the year will be like these two first months. Seems that 2005 will be the best year for classic movie fans.

Thanks a lot Warner!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I can't wait for Fred and Ginger, Garbo, Flynn, Cagney, Val Lewton, More Davis and Crawford, The Thin Man collection, More Fim Noir, San Francisco, Test Pilot, The Good Earth, Bathing Beauty, Easter Parade, The Band Wagon, and whatever more comes in 2005.

The Gangsters box set will be mine, all five DVD Choice winners and the three Best Picture winners (to almost finish off my Best Picture Collection...)

That's just the first two months (so far,) just imagine what the rest of 2005 will hold!

(My poor wallet...)

Simply awesome.

I have no reason to doubt Warner with their stellar record over the past 2+ years, but here's hoping that The Public Enemy is presented in its correct windowboxed 1.17:1 OAR.

WHITE HEAT?!?

Sweet!

I never expected to see 4 out 6 Cagney films in the Gangsters boxset.

However, with the inclusion of 4 major Cagney titles, I can only speculate as to what will be in the Cagney boxset (as opposed to the Gangsters boxset), unless someone out there already knows?

I would have thought that 2 of the titles would be Love Me or Leave Me and The Strawberry Blonde. Any thoughts?
The Strawberry Blonde!!!! Yes, it would be nice to have it on the Cagney box set along with Love or Leave me.

Captains of the Clouds should be on the list since it was a choice on the dvd decision contest.

I would like to see The Bride come C.O.D., Each Dawn I die and Torrid Zone, with Ann Sheridan, though I think the last one might never be released on dvd.

The Cagney collection may just be a repackaging of some of the gangster titles along with Yankee Doodle Dandy.

LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME (a terrific Cagney performance!!) is announced as a forthcoming (2005) musical in the current THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT! enclosure.

Terrific news!! I'm glad that it's a January release. That still leaves 11 months for other classics that have been mentioned in this thread. I really believe that 2005 should be another banner year for WB product. I'm guessing that they are going to try and maximize their profits before the advent of hd-dvd in order to help fund the transition. Not to mention the fact that dvd sales will no doubt begin to slow down once hd-dvd takes off.

I'm really expecting to see another year like 2004. And not just Warner, but the other studios as well. With some exceptions of course. I'm thinking that Warner will have a greater number of second tier (if that's the right term) releases since they're running out of movies worthy of the SE treatment. Plus they know how much good PR is worth, and so I assume that they would want to remain popular with DVD buyers in order to keep the money rolling in, especially with hd-dvd on the horizon.

Here's hoping that this is only the first of many excellent Warner releases for 2005!

You know, the inclusion of 4 of James Cagney's greatest films in this collection, makes me wonder if there is a Signature Collection coming soon. In the March chat, all that was said was that Cagney fans would be very pleased, soon after the Flynn set was released-they had hoped to release it by the end of '04. And, we definitely are pleased, Hell, I'm overjoyed! But that makes me think that we may need to wait for a set. With the Busby Berkley set in the works -that will surely include Footlight Parade, they may need to wait to finish preparing more of his films. There are still tons of Cagney films to release,The Strawberry Blonde, The Bride Came C.O.D., "G" Men, Taxi, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Blonde Crazy, Lady Killer, Each Dawn I Die, Oklahoma Kid, etc. But this should keep us satisfied for quite a while. Not that I would Dare complain if they did release a boxed set!

P.S. I think it is funny that the covers to Angels with Dirty Faces, and The Roaring Twenties, use the same face of James Cagney, it reminds me of the original posters for the Maltese Falcon that had a picture of Humphrey Bogart from High Seirra. I like it.

I think you're spot on Derek; with all this gold, I can wait a little longer for a dedicated Cagney set.

(I can't read your sig without hearing Muni's chilling voice!)
