Universal releasing Non-OAR dvds including "The Forbin Project, "Charley Varrick" - Page 2

It woule probably be more effective to write the appropriate executive within Universal, or better still his boss. Does anyone know who we can write to?

It is definitely worthwhile to send complaints to Universal. On their TV front, one of their execs recently mentioned in an article that they had listened to fans regarding sound issues on the release of Miami Vice to DVD (I believe it was regarding whether 5.1 would be used). If they listen on their TV releases, hopefully they will listen to fans regarding their movie releases as well!

Just to be clear before people get too worked up, the executive was responding to fan *rumors* that the DVDs would not have DD 5.1 and confirming that indeed they would. The sound wasn't added in response to fans; it was already planned.

But your point remains that some executives do sometimes turn to the net to monitor fan reactions.

The point with the DVDs in question in this thread is that they're already done and maybe are even pressed. So, while it's fine to send complaints, they may not be valid. I agree they should fix their website if their info is incorrect - and that's not just Universal, it's several other studios that put out mis-information. From my point of you I will damn them when there's something concrete to damn them about. I'm an optimist, I guess.

How is don't disrespect the letterbox an invalid argument?

The point is that there shouldn't even be a thread like this one. Universal never should have released the titles pan and scan.

We shouldn't complain about that? Let's appease them, what a good idea. I'll order up all the titles and replace all my fine widescreen Universal titles with pan and scan versions. Maybe even VHS tapes.

These titles are coming out pan and scan. That isn't in question anymore, you can pretend it is, in Never-never-land, but here in Region-1, they're pan and scan.

How doesn't Universal deserve to be damned?

they're pan and scan

...or (grasping at straws) in some cases open-matte.

But which ones?

(As I said before, taping construct paper on the TV is fine for me...)

I'm sorry, but no one has offered up concrete proof to me that ALL of these titles are being released incorrectly. I'm not condoning Universal if they are releasing them incorrectly, and I don't live in Never Never Land, and I find that comment offensive and unnecessary. Mr. Crawford has "slapped" me down twice for being much less offensive than that - where is he now?

Pardon me if I wait to be upset until I read something that's concrete - like someone actually having the DVD in hand and viewing it. That's my way, and I'm sorry it doesn't please you.

Andrew,
First off, let's cease with the personal comments towards other members like living in a "never never land".

Secondly, let's keep our perspective here, without this discussion being deviated from the alleged issue of Universal releasing dvds in a non-OAR format.

Arthur,
Thirdly, if you have a problem with post or thread then report it and one of the moderators will reply to the situation, but remember, we have day jobs too so give us time to address the situation.

Robert,

Sorry about that.

I saw the "report post" feature after I posted. Now I know how to use such a thing.

The next batch of Universal Selections are all Anamorphic Widescreen according to DVDANSWERS:

Universal has today announced the March Studio Selections. Available from the 1st March next year will be the Joel Schumacher directed D.C. Cab which stars Mr. T and Adam Baldwin, Ghost Dad which stars Bill Cosby and Denise Nicholas, Paradise Alley which stars Sylvester Stallone and Kevin Conway, White Palace with Susan Sarandon and James Spader, and finally the John Schlesinger directed Yanks which stars Richard Gere alongside Vanessa Redgrave. Each of the titles will be presented in anamorphic widescreen along with an English Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track. As with all the other Studio Selections, no artwork will be included. We'll bring you the official artwork for these titles shortly.

This might give me more reason to believe that they have posted incorrect info on their website because if they're going to release mediocre films like this in Anamorphic widescreen, I can't see them releasing such gems as Charley Varrick & Colossus:The Forbin Project in full frame.

I emailed them last week about that and no response...I tried.
I can see any studio releasing anything. I've seen too much weird stuff happen!

Somewhere along their line of employees, one of them should be, at the least, chewed out for putting up FS info if it isn't true - or vice-versa.

... as did I, with the same results .... NO RESPONSE.

I e-mailed them too about 10 days ago- again NO RESPONSE!!!!

I'm taking a wait & see position. If "The Forbin Project" is released in Full frame, I'll simply keep My $$$ & keeping watching my Widescreen Laserdisc.

Well Colossus:The Forbin Project shipped out to me today. I should know in a few days whether Universal dropped the ball or not.

Please let us know Jay. Thanks!

I received the Colossus DVD today and am very sad to report it is indeed full frame, with English Dolby Digital 2.0 mono.

Open matte or pan & scan John?

I'm not sure since I haven't watched it yet and the case description doesn't give that info. I'll try to watch it shortly and report back if someone doesn't beat me to the punch.

Since Colossus was Panavision theatrically, this is definitely a pan-and-scan abomination.
There goes the thoughts about the Universal website not being correct. This sucks, and means that Iceman (another Scope film) also will really be FULL FRAME! Thanks for NOTHING Univer$al.
Good to know, saved some bucks.
I guess it's time to starting holding out hope for Rs 2 and 4...

Doh! It's Charley Varrick that could be open matte isn't it? I'm beginning to hate Universal with an almost unnatural passion...

Outrageous. Unbelievable. Disgusting.

COLOSSUS is not a film I'm interested in personally, but it doesn't change the anger I have at Universal for this. It's
a problem that ought to be nipped in the bud with vocal protests before it becomes a new pattern.
They can issue a 1.85:1 special edition of AMAZON WOMEN ON THE MOON, but a genuine sci-fi classic like COLOSSUS or ICEMAN we get in pan and scan. I thought Universal was beginning to show signs of improvement with their Legacy sets. This throws them back into the DVD abyss they have occupied for too many years. NO SALE, UNIVERSAL... if you're reading this (which I doubt), you shot yourselves in the foot yet again.

I believe, but am unsure, that the next wave of these Studio Classic, or whatever they're called, titles will be OAR. Apparently, more people wanted a letterboxed Sunset Park than Colossus.

Again, I'm not totally sure, but I remember reading about it.

So, they did learn, just too late. And they're not doing anything to correct the existing problem...
If I remember right from TV viewings, the pan & scan version of COLOSSUS had many shots displayed with an anamorphic squeeze - before Colossus is given a voice, its thoughts appear only on a wide display screen and the words wouldn't fit in a pan & scanned image without the squeeze. Of all the movies that really cried out for a widescreen transfer, this was one of the essential ones. Thanks a lot, Universal.
