Re: Cool Hand Luke... Special Edition ?

Direcrtor's cut? Stuart Rosenberg died last March. I suppose he could have asked for a scene or shot to be reinstated, but I have never heard of alternate cuts of Cool Hand.

Play is also calling the new 'Magnum Force' a 'Directors Cut'; afaik, they're the only ones doing so.

I have never dealt with them before. Do Play.com have a reputation John?

I don't think they ship overseas*, otherwise it's mainly a thumbs up. BTW, just rechecked, and 'Magnum Force' is in fact a 'Directors Edition', minor change but significant.

*They don't ship to Portugal or any country outside the EU.

Re: Cool Hand Luke... Special Edition ?

Awesome. I'm curious about who the commentator is, didn't the director die a few years ago? Maybe it's Paul Newman?

Re: Cool Hand Luke... Special Edition ?

Actually in Australia yesterday afternoon, there was a documentary on Channel 7 about Paul Newman. It was produced by A&E and ran for about two hours.

Wonder if Warners would consider doing another documentary like that of Joan Crawford or Myrna Loy/William Powell. I mean Cool Hand Luke is really his signature role, is it not.

Re: Cool Hand Luke... Special Edition ?

I watched The Hustler for the first time last night in about 4 years. I think it is Newman's best performance that I've seen. All the other actors are great as well, Jackie Gleason is brilliant even though he is only in two scenes!

About time!!!

I doubt Newman will contribute to the DVD though. Apparently his health is declining rapidly and he tends to prefer to keep away from interviews these days.

One of my favorite films behind Butch Cassidy.

Warner Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Cool Hand Luke (Deluxe Edition) on 9th September 2008 priced at $19.97 SRP. Paul Newman, who was Oscar-nominated for Best actor for his role, gives one of the most powerful performances of his career as Lucas “Luke” Jackson, a cool, gutsy prisoner in a Southern chain gang, who refuses to buckle under to authority, while repeatedly escaping and being recaptured. The prisoners admire Luke because of his gumption but the head of the gang hates him and tries to break him by beating him often. Ultimately Luke gains the respect of all the convicts but with each escape and return he is subjected to more and harsher punishments by the sadistic guards.

Newly remastered, the film boasts an all-new featurette, “A Natural-Born World-Shaker: The Making of Cool Hand Luke,” an in-depth look at the creation of an uncompromising classic. Other extras include commentary by noted writer and Paul Newman biographer Eric Lax and the original trailer.

Re: Cool Hand Luke... Special Edition ?

Been catching up on this thread. "...Luke" is one of my all-time favorites and I agree with what's mentioned here, imo, it's Newman's defining role. As much as I liked P.N. in The Sting and Butch Cassidy, I thought he outperformed both roles in "...Luke". And, talk about an awesome cast! George Kennedy, JD Canon, Lou Antonio, Strother Martin, Morgan Woodward ("don't mess with the man with no eyes"), Dennis Hopper, Wayne Rogers....remember Joe Don Baker in a minor role?

Most remember this film for that famous line that Mike Frezon used so well in this thread , but I like the scene where Strother Martin gives the "new guy" talk in front of the warden's house:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
(Strother Martin as the Warden): 2 years? That ain't much....we got one that's doin' a 20-spot....we got one that's doin' all of 'em.....we got all kinds, and you gonna fit in real good". You won't need no third set (leg-irons), 'cause we gonna get your mind right....AND I MEAN, RIGHT!"

Later, after Luke wins the "egg-eating" bet (JD Canon as "Society" says)...
"No one can eat 50 eggs". Luke just lays on that table and smiles that classic "Luke" smile

Beth, I read your posts and this one was my Dad's favorite as well. If you've not yet seen it, you're in for a great DVD ride

I pulled out my old '97 snap-case version, and it says on the back cover "enhanced for 16:9 WS TVs". I guess, if the original release is anamorphic (help me out here, gurus, if I'm wrong here ), I've not decided to double-dip for the extras. I would d/d if the '97 release wasn't an anomorphic version.

Re: Cool Hand Luke... Special Edition ?

^^ PERFECTION!!

This is how ALL Warner's Special/Deluxe/Ultimate Editions should look and be packaged. Supplementals seem interesting, poignant and not in the least superfluous. I've waited so long for this release, skipping over the initial DVD and have actually deprived myself of enjoying the film in anticipation of this eventual package, knowing it would be worth the wait -- and what a wait it was! Thanks for posting!

Reminds me of the iconic James Dean shot in Giant, which by the way was cribbed on the cover of the new Texas Monthly with T. Boone Pickens.

Very good review Colin. I first saw this a few years ago on AMC after my Mother badgered me into trying it out. She is a smart woman! LOL
