Well, as I said in my other thread, I'm certainly not well studied in the "art". But by coincidence(?), I finally knew of Richard Avedon just a week or so ago from another photographer whom I had the pleasure to make acquaintence while I shot a few frames at this little espresso bar near my workplace. We chatted a bit about street photography, and he shared a great anecdote or two as well as his great admiration for Richard Avedon. So I finally learned a bit about this legend of a photographer, and just the other day, he passed away.

I'm really not one w/ great interest for studio type portrait work nor fashion photography, but Mr. Avedon certainly deserves any aspiring young photog's attention much like other great legends. Here's a few quick links I dug up for people to check out.

Looks like I will need to make a trip to the Met this fall/early winter to check out the exhibit.

And on a related note, although this particular photographer is nobody famous, he did hold a certain special spot in many of our hearts over in the DPReview Samples & Galleries forum, whether it be a particularly warm one or inspirational or one of despise due to some brutally honest comment he might offer. And maybe a few people here might have crossed paths w/ him over in DPReview or some other photography site like photosig.com. For me (and some others), he has been a great help to break out of the typical stale/sterile, generic photography mold. No, his photography may not wow too many people, but he certainly provides plenty to see and think about in his images.

His name is Jacques Meertens, and is one of the little Belgian group who calls itself the 2point8.

Farewell and peace to these fine men...
