If it does happen, I can't see Brooks getting out of calling it "The Search for More Money", as the AICN link mentions.

I was just thinking about this the other day. Now I guess I don't have to write it for my own amusement.

*May the Schwartz be with you*

Wonder if there will be any DVD jokes like the VHS joke in the first one. Perhaps they will pull it out and play all the alternate scenes or endings.
It will be interesting to see who'll be in it.

It'd be funny if they brought back Rick Moranis.

This news definitely makes me smile.

I'm glad to hear there will be a Spaceballs 2, and I agree it must be called the search for more money.

Evil will win, because good is dumb.

Will Rick Moranis return as Dark Helmet though? Last I heard, he was retired from acting all-together and raising his kids full time.

What about Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II?

What, no digitally altered "special" edition?

I liked SPACEBALLS. I don't know if Mel Brooks still "has it" anymore, but I'd be interested in Part 2.

Perhaps they will do a prequel that shows how he became Dark Helmet? If they did it like this, then they wouldn't necessarily need Moranis although for me he would be missed.

Then again, who knows?
Hey, who needs Moranis for Dark Helmet when David Prowse is still active?

But, I've said it before and I'll say it again: John Candy is irreplaceable.
If they can't get Rick Moranis, they coudl use David Burke. Also very funny and looks a lot like him.

It doesn't have to be tied to the SW mythos so much this time out -- there's plenty of sacred fantasy franchise cows that need a good kick in the pants.

I suspect George's penchant for re-editing the OT, Jar-Jar, the fact that no one notices Palpatine is Sidious, Amidala's elaborate hair-dos, Yogurt fighting, and the Clones (cue an anatomy joke) probably will provide some laughs.

I don't think I could stomach another Matrix "bullet-time" spoof though, that's just been way overdone.

I suppose they could riff on Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter also (maybe have young Dark Helmet kill Harry Potter to begin his descent to the Dark Side).

Still waiting for the History of the World sequels.
Shawn, I don't think Brooks ever intended to make that "sequel", it was just a device to hang some more jokes on at the end. Some pretty good ones, too, with "Hitler on Ice" and "Jews in Space."
Shawn...you weren't serious, were you? I gave up THAT wait 15 years ago! lol

I think it would be a great gag if they watch "Spaceballs: The Movie" again and you can't even see anything because the whole screen is filled with CGI creatures which obscure virtaully everything else.

no john candy tho

CGI John Candy

You said it, George!

If Brooks can pull off the Queen Amidala hairdo gag as well as he did the Princess Leia/Vespa gag... someone told me [d/k if it is true] that Carrie Fisher saw that part and had to be helped to the ladies room before she had an unseemly accident.

Well, maybe it could be a prequel, which would rule out the need for John Candy [R.I.P, buddy!]. Of course, other than Mel himself, how many members of the original cast would be willing to reprise their roles?
I think it would be cool if Brooks could find a role for Larry David in this movie. They were pretty funny together in the last season of "Curb Your Enthusiasm". Larry David could probably do a good Dark Helmet, but he's probably too tall for the short gag to work.

A manic Dark Helmet could be pretty funny.

I guess they could always say that Barf went to Moggie Heaven and go in a totally different direction for the sidekick (Insert Ewok joke here).

Not to be cruel, but it's not like anyone became big time $20 Million Dollar Movie stars. Why wouldn't they want to come back? I'm pretty sure everyone is still with us with the exception of John Candy.
Yeah I know the actress who played Princess Vespa chimed in on VH1's "When Star Wars Ruled The World", so I doubt she wouldn't be able to fit this into her schedule.

Besides the old Hollywood adage of a person being only as hot as their last project probably helps Mel Brooks, as The Producers was seen as a huge hit.

He could probably get a lot of people to do cameos at least for Space Balls 2.

"Hey, how in the hell did we get here? Cue up the Spaceballs 2: The DVD!"

"Ah, here it is, sir... there was a scene deleted in which the warp drive malfunctioned and we ended up in Texas. According to the commentary, it wasn't that interesting."
With all the new technology, imagine how nice this sequel could look. He could totally make fun of the new Star Wars, it would be perfect. Personally, I would love to see Horatio Sanz as the son of Barf.

I didn't find the last movie he did (?) Dead and Loving it, to be all that funny, so I have doubts about Spaceballs 2, but if it is a true sequal, the material for new parody of the SW movies is limitless .

'According to the Expanded Spaceballs Universe, Dark Helmet was born here and has a secret sister..."

DH: "Really? I have a sister?"

Horatio Saenz is the actor I thought of immediately for the father of Barf (if this is a prequel).

This movie sticks with me. Even now, watching Episode IV-VI, I keep expecting to see "We Brake for Nobody'' plastered on the back of some of those Empire battle cruisers.
