Veronica Mars season 1 (ongoing thread)

Am I the only one looking forward to this new show? Sounds kinda interesting. It premieres on Wednesday (9/22) at 8pm CST before moving to it's regular slot of Tuesdays at 8pm CST next week.

I saw Kristen Bell in the Lifetime movie Gracie's Choice, and she was pretty good in it.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I'm looking forward to it - the buzz is good, I like the actor playing Veronica's father, and it's a Joel Silver production so there's no way it's going to look as cheap as a lot of UPN shows.

I thing it'll do pretty well; there's a Buffy-shaped void for this to fill on the TV-schedule.

You are not the only one, Tony, but given the responses to this thread , it is not on many people’s list. EW said that Veronica’s character was like a teen Karen Sisco. While I think this means I’ll probably really like this show, it may spell doom for its success since Sisco lasted all of 6 or 8 episodes. Alas, such is the fate of most new shows I enjoy. Another one few are talking about is Life as We Know it.

Anyway, I’ll be tuned in and will leave some thoughts here after tomorrow.

I'll be recording it, but the Tuesday night slot is murder for me. I'd rather it be on Wedneday night.
I have also heard the good buzz, so I will check it out.

I don't get the "Karen Sisco" factor, where the female lead is too tough to appeal to guys. She was sexy as hell. Does that mean most guys are pussies?
I thought this was tonight...? Patrick says it was last night?
Quentin, it'll be on tonight but then start it's regular time slot of Tuesday next week. I'm not sure why this is. I'm sure someone knows. Maybe they figured everyone would be too busy checking out their Star Wars DVDs last night.

She was sexy as hell, and also one of the most interesting and complex female characters on TV in a long time. I just think people are comfortable with certain female stereotypes and have a hard time with anything else. That's too bad really. When actors complain that there are no good female roles, they need not blame the networks but the audiance. They just don't watch.

If VM is half as good as Sisco, though, I'll watch for as long as its on the air. *sigh*

It is on my record list tonight. I had a lot to record on Monday and tonight, too many good/new shows at the same time. However, yesterday nothing appealed to me and I watched a mystery on PBS.

The best new show you're not watching: Veronica Mars

Yeah, I know UPN hasn't generally aired anything entertaining since the 2002-2003 season but a new show has premiered tonight that I have fallen in love with show named Veronica Mars. Guys, this show is absolutely fantastic and I urge you all to check it out. It's funny, intriguing, and wholly, wholly original. It manages to sidestep just about every cliche that it might have fallen into and does it with style. Everything about this show is just so great. It has this underground cult appeal similar to Wonderfalls (I probably just jinxed it for good). And now that we're all familiar with the new network equation (Great show + small yet strong fanbase + unstellar ratings for the first 2 episodes = cancellation) I really do urge you all to check it out. Don't be offput by the fact that next week's episode guest star's Paris Hilton because this show is really just great. As of writing this, the series premiere is only in it's third commercial break. It's really that good. Please, please, please, check it out next week. It's the one good thing on UPN 9/8c Wednesdays.

But it's moving to Tuesdays.

Anyhow, very promising pilot episode, good intro to an already complex teenage female PI with plenty of traumatic life experiences, but appears to have been able to deal with those curveballs and keeps on hacking.

I'll be tuning in for more of that cute lil' marshmallow...

I thought it was a good first episode. The mystery of the best friend's death will keep me watching, as will the very likeable Kristen Bell. I sure hope Paris Hilton doesn't have much screentime in next week's episode, though.
I thought it was pretty good, but I too would rather it stayed on Wednesdays. I work on Tuesdays and always forget to set the tape. If it stayed on Wednesdays, I'd have a perfect night of "Lost," "Veronica Mars," and "CSI:NY".
Looks like Malcom's gonna be watching Kevin Hill on Wednesdays...
I don't think so. Perhaps an hour of TV-on-DVD between good shows.
Then it'll have to be "The Bachelor" ...
Really, quite a good show.

Much better than I was expecting, and it definitely caught me off guard. Funny, entertaining, and sets up quite a nice little arc (should it decide to continue along those measures).

They probably wanted to premiere it after their top-rated America's Next Top Model in hopes that more people will check it out. Then promo Paris to get them to follow it to Tuesday in case they're weren't quite sold.

If you missed it, I believe they are re-airing the pilot once or twice over the next week. MTV is showing it at 7:00 PM EDT on Tuesday the 28th. My local UPN affiliate in Detroit is also re-airing it on Sunday the 26th at 7:00 PM EDT.

Regards,

I really enjoyed this. Veronica’s character has enough complexity to keep this show interesting for a long while. I’m looking forward to seeing how they will balance the high school part of the show with the PI parts of the show. I want to see a good bit of both. The PI story lines started off strong. The high school parts were good but not yet great. They did have quite a bit of set-up to do. I guess I want this to be Karen Sisco meets My So Called Life rather than KS meets 90120. We’ll see how it plays out. Enrico Colantoni was great as the Dad. A dog named “Backup.” Great! Some good music also. I too am disappointed that Hilton will be on the show next week. If it grabs a few viewers, I can tolerate for now.

I’m glad it’s moving to Tues. Mainly because it is a big shift in mood after watching LOST. I needed more time to catch my breath. BTW, are all of UPN’s HD shows in stereo rather than DD? The HD looked very good though. Also, where do I know the motorcycle gang leader from? I’ve seen him in something very recently.

Seems like another teen series so I was suprised it is showing as late as 8pm. Previews don't promise much so I will be skipping this one, too cheesy looking for me.

If the lead character was prettier I might give it a chance.
Cheesy? Like the Bachelor cheesy? Like an Elvis movie cheesy? Baywatch cheesy? The previews I saw didn’t seem to depict cheesiness in any way. Actually watching the entire show definitely did not leave a cheesy impression. It’s your prerogative not to watch, but it’s hard to pass judgment on this one based on the previews. This is a quirky show, but in a good way I think. Watch at least the first half hour, and then you’ll know if this show is for you or not.
90210 cheesy. I don't watch TV that much anymore so I'll skip this one without giving it a try. TV to me is about sports like hockey, football and Formula One. My GF is sucker for the reality shows but I can't stand them. I still haven't found anything that would replace 3rd Rock From The Sun, Dharma & Greg, All In The Family or The Jeffersons. Rescue Me looks promising as most Leary shows do, wonder how long it will survive.
Sami, Veronica Mars isn't 90210 cheesy. THis show is hipper than any new show on the WB and hipper (and cooler) than many shows they have been airing on the WB. Personally, I think they should leave Veronica Mars on Wednsday and have Kevin Hill on Tuesdays (a show I will not watch- it's chick TV fare).

Agreed. They should have just been straightforward with the title and called it "Kevin McBeal."

I too thought at first this may be cheesy but after giving a little of her background (how I lost my virginity), I really started to appreciate how well and complex this story was written. It definately made me want to see what had happened in the past. Considering all she has been thru and how her peers treat her, this girl has a very mature and level head on her.

Good mystery and I love the guy who plays her dad, although I was hoping he would be a simiregular on MONK.

Also, who wanted to walk up to their TV and slap that new sherif. He deserves much worse than he got and I hope he was involved in the past story line so he can get his in the end.

With the words you are choosing I think you are just reinforcing my image of a teenage and early 20's show. Sorry, a teenage girl doing PE work just is cheesy even if the stories are good. The ads they have been running give just that image of the show, horrible. It also doesn't help that the actors aren't even close to the age they are supposed to be, I would imagine this is in her mid 20's if not older.

I guess I'm just getting old when the teenage shows start to feel juvenile. I will spent the next viewing moments with my new Star Wars Trilogy discs...

Agreed. I couldn't watch 90120 and wouldn't watch this if it were like that. Although I do say in my earlier post it could take that track, I don't think it will based on what we saw last night. I do admit that having Paris Hilton on next week is cheesy. Hopefully this is an early ratings grab that won't continue, and hopefully Veronica does something like beat the snot out of Hilton's character!

According to this, Veronica Mars didn't do so well in the ratings last night:

Quote:
UPN's "Veronica Mars" managed only a 1.8/3 in its premiere.

Maybe the move to Tuesdays will be more successful.
