Extra Spaces/Lines? (Merged)

What's up with the formatting of posts? There seem to be a lot of extra spaces being inserted. And when I "edit" (quick edit) a post, it comes up with a bunch of HTML gobbledygook instead of just the normal text and vB code tags.

Malcolm:

That is an on going problem that is very intermittent and I haven't been able to find out its cause.

I did notice that it doesn't seem to happen all the time.

I've noticed today that it's only happened to my posts in the Olympic thread in AHL.

There is extra < br> code being added to "enter"/"carriage return" keystrokes when trying to produce paragraphs in posts.
I doubt if this has anything to do with it, but I always manually type the code to use Quote, and I almost always get extra spaces. Using the Quote button to quote text just now, the spaces didn't appear. I don't know if it's just the randomness of the whole thing, or if there might be an answer there. I doubt it, but you never know.

I experienced the extra line breaks today both while using the QUOTE button and by typing in the code manually.

FWIW,

It seems to be tied to certain threads (forums?). For instance, it always happens when I post in my S&S screenshot contest. I don't know if it happens to others posting in there or not. Perhaps it's more likely for thread originators. I don't know, just throwing out some info.

This happened to me today, posting in software - film and documentary. I was so startled that I deleted my original post as it took up quite a bit of screen real estate

I think it's getting worse. That Olympics discussion thread in AHL is out of control.

['Seinfeld' reference] Look at these wide lanes between paragraphs. It's so luxurious. [/'Seinfeld' reference]

It does seem to be getting worse. I'm now noticing it in lots of threads.

But it never seems to happen on editing a post, only the original.

If you haven't gotten anywhere on this yet, it must be driving you nuts! I made a post yesterday without using the 'Enter' kay, and used the spacebar in Notepad to get to the next line, but when it was done. The spaces weren't there. If I put 20 spaces between 2 words it should show up, no?
So, I edited it, and all of the spaces showed up correctly in the edit.
Many moons ago I learned how to use a teletype machine, and we were told to hit 3 keys for a new paragraph. (Can't remember if it was 2 carriage returns and 1 line feed or the reverse), but we were told that sometimes one of them doesn't go through, and this way it was insured.

Yeah, programming has changed, but maybe, just maybe, that will help.

Another test. I find that when I copy a post into my thread in polls, it adds the spaces. But when I copied it here, it didn't. Just one more piece of evidence that this might be thread-specific.
Nice, George!

I also got to thinking that if it is thread specific, then dump the thread. - Wait! No, not that!

Make a new one up with a slightly different name and cut/paste the posts into the new one and see what happens.

Also, didn't this start up right after the last time this forum was down? I thought I started to notice them right after that.

Parker: I know this problem must be driving you nuts.

But as I was trying to edit THIS POST the code got me all confused and now even the small "This post has been edited x times..." at the bottom is even showing up in bold.

It's kinda funny, actually.

It is driving me nuts.

Glad others noticed.

Hey, it's not doing it now. But it does it when I post in the Star Wars thread.

Parker,

Have you submitted a support ticket to vb about this issue? I haven't seen any threads in the support forums concerning this issue, and I thought they may be able to help. You can't always fix everything yourself.
It's too bad that this problem should show up at a time like this, with the release of the long awaited Sart Wars DVDs. I am sure the forum gains a lot of new members during such major movie/HT/DVD events, links (to the glitch thread for instance) get posted on other forums, newsgroups and attract people to this place, not to mention traditional lurkers who decide to finally register in order to chime in on the event. But some of them may be turned off by this spacing issue, which makes it a bit of an emergency in my book as there aren't many events of this magnitude - is it safe to say that these are the most anticipated DVDs ever?

Anyway, I am just sayin'.

Just an FYI, but there is a HTF LA Event going on this week, so Parker's attention is divided, to say the least. Hang tight, folks. It's not the end of the world.

Spacing is the least of the problems accompanying the release of Star Wars on DVD.

I don't know if this will help you narrow down the problem or not, but I noticed something. I never use HTML code in my posts. I always use vB code. However, when I went to edit one of my posts that showed the extra spacing, all of the vB code had been converted to HTML code. I've never seen that before.

And everywhere I had put two carriage returns there was now four < br >'s there (extra space character is so it will show up in the post).

Why All the Extra Blank Lines in Recent Posts?

In the last couple of days I have seen extra blank lines generated between paragraphs in the posts I have created. I've seen this on other posts as well. When I edit my own posts, I see 4 [br /] tags generated between paragraphs (replace the [ & ] with < & > ). What's going on??
Trust me, it is driving me just as crazy as
it does all of you.

I wish we could find a solution to the problem too.

I'm sure Parker will at some point.
Sorry about opening the new thread - I hadn't seen this problem until the past couple of days and didn't see any threads about it on the first page of the area so I assumed it was a new thing and I was the first to report it.

Good luck in finding the cause, Parker. Ain't computers grand??
As far as I can tell, it's never in the first post of a thread, but only after several others - and from there it occurs in every subsequent post. Perhaps some characteristic of one of the posts elicits the further conversions.

Yes < br > and < /br > sequences (without the spaces) are added (and occasionally some other html-stuff too). The good news is: if you edit your post, you can take them out again and they won't return.

They seem to be running amok today. In places that they weren't before.

The TV section has this all over. Please make it stop, it's driving me nuts...

I get around it by manually inserting the br tag instead of going to a new line in the messages, but that only fixes my messages of course...

(copied from a thread I started, before I discovered this one)

I believe this has been reported before, but I was just editing a post in the TV section, and it presented me with HTML tags along with the vB pseudo tags (along with the excessive line breaks).

In fact, the URL pseudo-tag was not being parsed so I added an A HREF tag to make my link work properly. And that's something I really shouldn't be able to do, for forum safety.
