I hope so...but it doesn't sound promising.
Of course they will, Roy, because there will always be an audience for classic TV just as there's an audience for classic radio (a.k.a. Old Time Radio).

This year I started to get into OTR with a number of radio series that eventually moved to television. One of them is SUSPENSE , which on radio lasted an amazing 20 years (1942 to 1962) and more than 900 episodes (most of that series) are available FREE online in the public domain. However, the 260 episodes of TV version produced from 1949 to 1954, I've been unable to find anywhere. Anyone have info on that show?

The sales for some old TV series have done quite well. Cases in point: The Rockford Files, M*A*S*H, The Twilight Zone (original series), SCTV, All in the Family, I Love Lucy, MacGyver. The list goes on... As the other guys said, Gord never made that statement.....one of the members did.

Thanks Jeff#....I'm glad to hear your unwavering faith in Paramount and others in continuing to produce Classic TV on DVD.

Just today we've heard about S5 of "Murder She Wrote", the success of which has me very hopeful that PM and 5-0 will see multiple seasons as well.

Steve

Nope, I didn't say that at all, and I wouldn't ever say that because I know the studios haven't stopped producing stuff prior to 2000. I may have made comments that early shows are harder to sell on DVD, or that they sell fewer copies than new shows, but no, I wouldn't say they've stopped producing earlier shows.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Now that it has been made official by the studio, is there any word on whether the episodes will be uncut and remastered? Any bonus material?

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Paramount doesn't provide that information (at least for the bonus material) until a month or so before street date.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I really like the cover art. The classic Five-0 imagery is all there: the giant curling wave, Jack Lord, the show logo, Danno...and the symbolism between the wave and Lord's signature wave-like pompadour is on full display. I think this is a cover that really catches your eye and will help sell units in stores to fans and newbies alike.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Paramount does a great job on duplicating their series (and also non-Paramount shows that just happen to be on their label, such as CBS programs which will soon include Hawaii Five-O). The problem is that special features / extras almost never seem to be part of the lineup. Do you think there will be any for this show? I don't.

I would love to see some special features but I'm not holding my breath for the reason you stated. Plus, there aren't too many people around any more who were directly involved with the show. The show's creator, Leonard Freeman, is dead, along with Jack Lord (McGarrett), Zulu (Kono), Kam Fong (Chin Ho), Herman Wedemeyer (Duke), Khigh Dheigh (Wo Fat), Richard Denning (The Governor), Morton Stevens (theme composer) and Moe Keale (Truck-season 12 and recurring guest actor). Jack Lord's wife even passed away about a year ago. That said, I still think they have a few opportunities for bonus features:

*Interview James MacArthur (Danno) for a retrospective

*Interview former producers who may still be alive for retrospective

*Interview former guest stars (Season 1 guest stars included Leslie Nielsen, Gavin MacLeod and Ricardo Montalban)

*Showcase any archival behind-the-scenes footage that may exist about the history of the show

*Showcase any behind-the-scenes footage that may exist regarding the remastering process used to clean up the episodes (presuming they will be remastered for the DVD)

*Showcase the Hawaiian islands themselves and visit famous landmarks and locations used in filming (I visited the Iolani Palace in 2003 and it hasn't changed a bit).

Even if Season 1 has no extras, hopefully it will sell well enough that they will include some for season 2.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Once again, Jeff, they don't need to be remastered because they already were back in the 1990s.

No, they weren't. They were remastered for syndication at syndication running times, not to their original 50+ minute lengths.

I'm flattered that I have my own personal Five-0 fact checker to keep me straight!

That's incorrect, Mike. Back in the mid 1990s I VHS recorded 71 tapes of Hawaii Five-O from WTXF in Philadelphia and every episode was complete with limited commercial interruption at about 50 minutes each and the film print quality was excellent.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

It's been way too long since I've seen this show, so I'm not sure about the rewatchability of the series. Plus, the large number of seasons is scaring me off from purchasing this, it's a huge potential investment. I'm going to pass.

I think the earlier seasons hold up better and are more rewatchable than a lot of the later season episodes. The last few seasons they trotted out McGarrett in leisure suits and giant collars, the music became more disco-y, and the series had a very dated look. The earlier seasons featured more conservative hair styles and clothing styles, and the music was better.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I just pre-ordered the S1 Set... I think after reading up on the show somewhat, i will be buying the first six seasons only. After that it seems the show goes downhill very fast, not only with seasons with a few bad episodes, but almost whole seasons of unwatchable shows.

Do you guy's that remember the show well agree that the first 6 years are really the only one's worth owning ?

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

The first 11 seasons are worth buying, Aryn, but a true Five-O fan will get all 12. Of course, we don't even know how many additional seasons of these are going to come out anyway.

That is True...

This is just one of those shows i don't recall very well. Being born in 71 i caught mainly the later season stuff and a few here n there in syndication.

At the moment i am watching the Hawii Five-O Pilot @ www.museum.tv

Good Site they have a few episodes of alot of classic shows on there and some modern day stuff aswell. All free to view, all be it not the greatest quality. But i wanted to check out some classics like Streets of San Francisco and now Hawaii Five-O to see if they still hold up for me. Both do!

While I will agree that the first 6 seasons are generally the best seasons to varying degrees, I think ALL of the seasons are worth owning. Seasons 7, 8 and 9 all feature a large number of entertaining episodes, although the series was repeating plots by this point. Season 10 has a few decent shows including the death of Chin Ho episode at the end of the season. Season 11 is generally forgettable, and Season 12 is virtually unwatchable, but I would argue that they should still be included in the collection of any true Hawaii Five-0 fan for completion's sake.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I noticed a trend towards sci-fi in the 11th season, particularly in the cyrogenics plot "Frozen Assets". Granted it wasn't sci-fi, but the overall tone of some of the stories seemed to be playing up the technology angle. That's what made some of the stories that year more interesting as the writers managed to keep things fresh so late in the series run. It's too bad the writing went to hell in the final season.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

The 11th season did feature some funky episodes including the cryogenics one. There were a couple that were halfway decent, including the 2-part disco episode (there's nothing quite like seeing McGarrett and Danno strolling across a dance floor in a club to the tune of "Night Fever" by the Bee Gees). Another one I enjoyed that season was the Robert Loggia episode, "The Execution File" in which he was a former detective preying on pimps.
By this point in the series, McGarrett was prone to moralizing and making nutty speeches at the end of each episode, which continued through to the end of the series.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

As with many series that had long runs, the show lasted too long. I didn't see many of the episodes past the first few seasons as CBS switched the time slot and put it opposite ABC Movie of the Week, which I rarely missed. Rather than worrying about the later seasons, for now I'll be happy to get the first 4 and if they keep going after that, then I'll worry about how many I'll buy.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

First 4 for me, and i am done. I think that was asked in this thread already? I think i answered too. My memory, oh well.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I remember this show in it's last season. It seemed like CBS was DELIBERATELY trying to "Kill" the series by constantly pre-empting it for "Special Programs" At one point you would see ONE episode, then for the next three weeks it would not be on, then another episode would be aired, then three more Specials. I'm sure a lot of viewers gave up on the show at this point, and its fate was sealed.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Also in Five-O's last season, they only did 19 shows (the 2 hour season premiere "A Lion in the Streets" actually counts as 1 episode), and that was a few less than the usual 23 / 24. By the fall of 1979, CBS already knew from the lower ratings that this was becoming a "lame duck" series and that it even came back with horrible writing was similar to when NBC brought back BONANZA for 16 more episodes in the fall of 1972....months after the death of Dan Blocker.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I hope they hang in there to at least season 5...gotta have the V for Vashon episodes. After that I would have to think if I want to continue with it.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I use to be a member of the "Four and Done" crew, but I've been watching these shows lately (I'm currently just starting season 9). I can say without a doubt, that seasons 5 - 8 are just as good as seasons 1 - 4. The writing for the most part is very good, if not better in some cases ("Terror in Blue" comes to mind). The only negative is that Kono was no longer around after season 4.

I'll be buying as many as Paramount wants to release!

Paramount's official press release:
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=6893

Still no word on whether or not the episodes will be remastered. The good news is that they WILL be uncut, full-length shows with a run-time of around 51 minutes each.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

51 Minutes! This is the one thing I LOVE the Most about 1960,s Television. If you buy a DVD of Today's Shows the'll be 45 Minutes in length OR LESS!!!
