This is my favorite Wo Fat episode, for all of the reasons you cited. Season 2 is where Five-0 really hit its stride. The music, acting, plots, guest stars, action all improved over the already-great season 1. My favorites from this season (several of which are my all time favorite episodes) are:
Savage Sunday- Five-0 vs. militants planning an overthrow of their country

Sweet Terror- International terrorists try to wipe out Hawaii's sugar crop

Singapore File- McGarrett at sea trying to protect a gorgeous witness

Leopard on the Rock- A dictator who is the target of an assassination plot lands in Hawaii

Which Way Did They Go?- William Windom vs. Jack Lord in a cat-and-mouse game. 'Nuff said.

Blind Tiger- McGarrett is blinded by a deranged assailant; Danny takes over

Run Johnny Run- Christopher Walken vs. Jack Lord ('nuff said again)

Cry Lie- Martin Sheen is a slimy lawyer who frames Chin Ho

Most Likely to Murder- Policeman Tom Skerritt's wife is murdered

3 Dead Cows at Makapuu- While it definitely could have been shortened to 1 part, this 2-parter concerns a scientist (Ed Flanders) who has developed a deadly bacterial weapon that he is holding the state for ransom with.

Again, Season 2 (along with season 3) are my favorites. I can only think of a few episodes that disappointed (Bored She Hung Herself, To Hell with Babe Ruth). Great guest stars and plenty of action this season!

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

It looks like Season Two will be out by the end of July. If they hold to the "Average" Release Schedule for Seasons, I wouldn't be surprised if Season Three will be featured in a "Black Friday" Sale this November!

Just curious -- does anyone know if these shows were shot on 35mm? I suspect the hand-held shots in the John Larch episode mentioned earlier (where he drills McGarrett on the beach) were shot with a 16mm camera.

Is this the same Mike of the Hawaii Five-0 Home page?

Weren't most televsion shows shot on 35mm film at the time?

I believe the shows were shot on standard 35mm film. The POV shots where Larch shoots people in the episode are still 35mm, but they are using a hand-held camera (cameraman appears to be holding the camera pointing it at the ground while running). Typically the cameras are on dollys and cranes, on tracks.

they draw from never anticipated that pre-orders would fly it off the
shelf the way it did ... even Best Buy sold out in less than a week.
That's really impressive.

I gave up and bought it on ebay when EVERY etailer I went to was sold out of it. Having never seen it before, I Netflixed it first to make sure I would like it before buying. Then when I loved it and decided to buy, it was no where to be found!

I got it for $28 which included first class shipping so I really can't complain. That's cheaper than anywhere else. I was just floored that it sold out at that many different places in such a short period of time.

I wonder if Mission Impossible Season 1 would have had similar results had it gotten the same exposure as Hawaii Five-O. It was like going on a treasure hunt to find it in the B&M stores this past December.

For those of you who were around when these first aired , were they comparable in popularity when they originally ran?

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I barely remember them from their original run on CBS, but I watched them in reruns on WOR in the mid-to-late 80's (this was a New York superstation). They were chopped-up and grainy, faded prints, but it was still fun discovering them. WOR ran Five-0 for many years. When I moved to Orlando in 1991, the Fox affiliate WOFL ran them off and on (uncut) until 2002 or 2003; this is the source from which I was able to make most of my recordings from. Family Channel and other cable outlets ran the chopped, remastered prints starting in 1997. There are still 20 or more stations that run them today around the country. Hawaii Five-0 is an evergreen show, particularly popular in the late evening and afternoon time slots.

The fact that "Hawaii Five-0" ran for 12 seasons speaks volumes of its popularity; until "Law & Order" came around, it was television's longest running crime series.

"Mission: Impossible" took advantage of the spy craze of the 1960s and, while not enjoying the longevity of "Hawaii Five-0," was "must see TV" every Saturday night when it was originally broadcast.

Re: First Season - Back in Stock?

Does the quality hold for the entire 12 seasons or does it diminish in the later seasons as if often the case with long running series?

The only thing I remember about this from childhood is the music and opening scenes with the hula dancer and the big wave. I've had an absolute blast discovering this on DVD, and anxiously look forward to collecting subsequent seasons assuming they're as entertaining as this one is.

I enjoyed S1 of Mission Impossible as well, but I'd have to rate the entertainment value of Five-O as slightly higher if I had to choose. I'm told that MI got even better in S2.

Re: First Season - Back in Stock?

The last couple of years the quality of the shows "went south" significantly. CBS also did it's best to "Discourage" Viewers by Pre-Empting Hawaii Five-O for 2 or three weeks at a time for "Special" Programming. Time and again one would turn to the Thursday night Slot (I Believe it was 9:00 PM) and hear "Hawaii Five-O will not be seen tonight!" One evening I was almost Incensed when I overheard on one evening, when Hawaii Five-O and the show preceding it were both pre-empted, "The First Show" (I cannot remember which show it was, The Waltons?) will return next week, Hawaii Five-O will return in Three Weeks!" All I could say was "Why is CBS "Ganging Up" on Hawaii Five-O for its Specials?" Naturally Viewership fell off, and consequently the show was canned.

Yeah, I forgot about that one -- one of my favorites too! But wasn't that the one in which McGarrett's temporary blindness was caused by a car bomb at the beginning of the story? For some reason I remember May still being his secretary in that one, even though Jenny had already replaced her by the second season (and for the next several years).

Another GREAT episode indeed!

"Bored, She Hung Herself" is the only one I never saw in any form, but I'm looking forward to it for that reason alone on this DVD release (and I believe i will be included).

But "To Hell With Babe Ruth" I enjoyed because Mark Lenard was just terrific as a psychotic Japanese (!) man who in his mind is living some 28 years in the past (in his mind it's Pearl Harbor). Dressed as a ninja he steals some TNT and kidnaps a beautiful young woman who looks so much like her late mother that Lenard's character is obsessed with her and theatrens to blow her up as well as a tower they're on.
Great stuff!

I'll be curious to see what others including yourself think about "Bored, She Hung Herself" if it's included in the season 2 set (which it should be; I'm sure the studio still has a master print in a vault somewhere). As I've noted before, I hate everything about this one: bad acting, bad plot, bad guest stars. For crying out loud, the entire episode is built around a character who repeatedly hangs himself for meditational purposes, which is ludicrous. The fact that someone watched this episode and decided to copy the hanging technique, and died in the attempt, adds to the bad taste hanging over this show, and I can see why it was banned at the time. I would rank it alongside many of the horrible Season 12 episodes. I think some people may build this episode up in their minds as being something special simply because it has controversy and mystique surrounding it. Again, I'm really curious to hear people's reaction to it.

As for "To Hell With Babe Ruth", I never bought Lenard's performance as the ninja, possibly because of the horrible makeup and stilted acting (I did enjoy Lenard in several of his later Five-0 performances, and as Spock's father). Subsequently, the episode was a letdown despite good performances by our regular cast and some nice action scenes.

It's weird how they don't mention anything about the crime in "Six Kilos" on the Box esp. Meaning Swenson or Steve McG don't bring it up at all but Chicken breaks Steve's balls over his arrest.

Disc 1: No Luck

I received my replacement copy from Amazon today (paying a few dollars more than where I originally bought it locally) and eagerly put in Disc 1. No luck. It still doesn't play, so it's a compatibility issue with my player. It still works in my rinky-dink DVD-ROM drive so until I get a new player, I guess I'll have to watch it on my computer.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I find it rather odd that mixed among the messages in this forum are several ads (through Google) for bootleg sets of Hawaii Five-O. As reported to me via my Five-O page, the quality of these sets is dicey at best. The appearance of these ads is very curious, considering the following policy of the forum:

13. Home Theater Forum has a strict anti-bootleg policy. Any discussion pertaining to copying of ANY video or audio source, defeating of copyprotection in any form, or how to obtain related equipment is forbidden. In addition, the discussion of bootleg material is prohibited in this forum in any form. Such posts will be deleted automatically without explanation.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

It's official: Paramount has announced Season 2 of Hawaii Five-0 for release on July 31 with 25 episodes, including the rarely-seen "Bored, She Hung Herself". The fact that we are getting another release less than 5 months since the previous release is pretty indicative that Paramount is pleased with this show's DVD performance, and hopefully means there will be more seasons coming. I couldn't be more excited as season 2 and 3 are my personal favorites of the entire series, with SO MANY incredible episodes and awesome guest stars to choose from.

Hawaii Five-O season one [R2] dropped through my letterbox this morning, I can't wait to check it out with my fiancée tomorrow night...

I scanned through a couple of episodes, and wow, the transfers look great!

Brilliant news about S2 Jeff!

Yes, Yes, Yes...

Great news.

3 Dead Cows at Makapuu - Ed Flanders & Loretta Swit. Remember this one from childhood. Freaked me out. Loretta Swit looked very hot before M*A*S*H.

It isn't on DeepDiscount.com yet, but once it is they will most likely charge $31.89 -- the same price as the first season.

You need to realize the ads are selected by Google, not HTF. But if you see something illegal in a Google ad, you should contact Google about it. Have you done that?

They did a good job on these DVDs- not sure if there are extras since I'm only up to disc 2, but the video quality is very good.

This was one of the few hour-long shows that didn't air on the hour. I remember it used to be on at 8:30. Not sure how long it was in that time slot, but very unusual for an hour show to start at :30.

Let's hope they release the entire series, not just a season or 2 as with some shows like (apparently) Fantasy Island.
