The late Sylvester "Pat" Weaver -- one of pioneering producers at NBC for several decades who created both The Today Show and The Tonight Show was a crimefighter???

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I forgot to mention that Herman Wedemeyer (Det. Duke Lukela) wasn't the only future Five-O team member to play other cops earlier in the series.

The year before Duke was promoted from HPD uniformed cop to Five-O detective, Douglas Mossman (who was never shown in the opening credits) played Det. Frank Kemana in a number of 7th Season episodes. Mossman, who is still acting in this century, also played cops on this show going back to the beginning in 1968 (he was the HPD police lieutenant at the beginning of Act 1 in "Twenty-Four Karat Kill"). He also has the distinction of being the only series regular to leave the show and come back in still more guest roles.

Dennis Weaver...I went to school with a Pat Weaver - damn those names that sound the same.

Although Pat did pass on the genes that kept this planet free of Aliens!

Ha ha ha! Well, I'm sure Sigourney forgives you.

Dennis Weaver was good at fighting crime as Chester Goode on GUNSMOKE, but he did it best as McCloud.

I agree with much of that review, but this one part is incorrect:

Quote:
Its name derived from Hawaii's status as our 50th state, Five-O is a fictional state police agency headed by former Navy officer Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord), answerable only to Governor Paul Jameson ('50s sci-fi star Richard Denning).
This fictional Governor's name was Phillip Gray! Who was Paul Jameson?

One thing I noticed that we briefly discussed earlier is that the one thing missing from these episodes is the first wave that originally appeared at the beginning of each episode before the opening teaser. The rest of the waves at the end of each act are still there fortunately (and if they had removed those, there would be hell to pay), but why the beginning? It's only a few seconds!

found this at http://www.bigbob.com/five-o/h50faq.html :

What was the governor's name?
There is some misinformation in some references on TV shows. There are at least two such references which have the gov's name listed as Philip Grey. However, that was a DIFFERENT character played by Richard (the governor) Denning in the episode "24 Karat Kill" in the first season -- a U.S. TREASURY AGENT named Philip Grey. The governor's name shows up first in "The 90-Second War". It isn't mentioned, it's seen. There is a scene where Jonathan Kaye has McGarrett, Army & Navy brass, and the governor in the secret Diamond Head bunker. Each man has a nameplate. The governor's clearly reads: Paul Jameson. That name is also used in "A Capitol Crime" when Barnard Hughes's character demands to speak to "Governor Paul Jameson."

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Interesting....It was Phillip Gray throughout the 12 seasons. Other than those few items you mentioned about his being referred to as Jameson, I thought Hawaii Five-O had a script supervisor, which would prevent that kind of lack of continuity with character names.

But there were a lot of actors that were playing different characters on the show. In the documentary they have the one guy who played 30 different roles - including 25 bad characters. Didn't one of the cons in "The Box" also play one of McGarrett's main men in later seasons?

There needs to be a website called "Repeat Offenders" that keeps track of how many times an actor appeared on a show under multiple roles.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

One actor who appeared in seasons 1-7 as a guest star each year was Ed Flanders. He started with "Uptight" in season 1 and returned every season thereafter for 6 more seasons. I always found his performances to be very interesting, especially the scientist he played in Season 2's "Three Dead Cows at Makapuu". Unfortunately, Ed Flanders committed suicide in 1995.

Yep. Samoan actor Al Harrington appeared as one of the prisoners in "The Box" in 1969.

Three years later he came back to Five-O as a regular in the role of Ben Kokua for all of Seasons 5, 6 and the early part of the 7th season. Since they didn't change the opening credits in mid-season may explain why Al's replacement Doug Mossman wasn't added even though he too was a regular.

Al Harrington did a lot of work after he left this series, including a 5 part story arc in which "The Jeffersons" vacationed in Hawaii in 1980. He's my dad's age (71) and according to the IMDB, Al is working as a character actor in movies now.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I wasn't planning to post again so soon, but from again checking the IMDB site I noticed that guest stars John Larch & Vivi Janiss were also married in real life....until her death in 1988. Larch played Joe Trinian -- the man who ordered a hit on McGarrett in "Yesterday Died and Tomorrow Won't Be Born".

In that same episode Doug Mossman makes his second appearance as Lt. George Keahola.

By the way, whatever happened to Maggi Parker who played Steve's original secretary May in 11 of the first season episodes? She seemed to disappear after that.

Thanks Bob. It looks like two episodes in the first 5 seasons have not been remastered. The previously mentioned 2nd season episode that was pulled from syndication and a 5th season one.

Does anyone know exactly what caused the hanging episode to be pulled?

As for Season 1, the episodes I've seen do look great and have been a joy to watch. Some of the episodes do date very badly with the heavy emphasis on the hippies and their lingo, etc. It blew my mind watching these

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Bored She Hung Herself (season 2) was allegedly pulled when a boy who had seen the episode recreated a moment from the episode when someone hung himself without dying as part of some recreational/meditational thing. It was a horrible episode, one of the worst of the series.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Hawaii Five-O is currently out of stock at deepdiscount.com, amazon.com, bestbuy.com, buy.com, circuit city.com and f.y.e.com.

Do ya think it's safe to assume that it's selling well?!

I can't believe that this many e-tailers have it out of stock this soon after release. I'm wondering if this means that they underestimated the sales volume in stocking it, or if the sales have just exceeded expectations.

In any case, it seemingly bodes well for the liklihood of a S2 release.

Larch's character doesn't order a hit. After getting out of prison where he's been for 15 years, he shoots McGarrett himself at point-blank range while McGarrett is jogging on the beach (McGarrett was responsible for Trinian's stretch in jail, along with Walter Stewart, the fictional Hawaiian Attorney-General, also an object of Trinian's wrath in the episode).

Larch also played a different character in season 11's "The Execution File". It was in THIS episode that he hired a hitman (he was the boss of Honolulu's pimps) to take out Robert Loggia's detective character who was secretly killing pimps. This was actually a pretty good episode from a season that had lots of disappointments.

BTW, welcome to Home Theater Forum, Mr. Mike.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Yes, you're right about John Larch ordering the hit in "The Execution File", which was what I was thinking of. I posted that above shortly before I watched the "Yesterday Died...." episode again. It's been a lot of years since I've seen these, and there are so many of them.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Was there a 3rd episode of Five-0 that Larch appeared in, or were these the only 2? He was a staple of '70s crime drama guest star roles.

Those were the only 2, Jeff.

I was watching "Once Upon a Time" this morning, and I noticed that in Part 1 McGarrett mentions that his infant niece is 6 months old. In his discussion with Dr. Freemont in her office just before the end of the third act though, he mentions that the child is 12 months old. That was before the extended period of time passed leading up to her trial (before which McGarrett flies back to Hawaii, and then returns to Los Angeles for the trial at the end of Part 1).

This was a rare script oversight on the part of Leonard Freeman, unless Jack Lord had a blooper that was left in!

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

For those of you watching Hawaii Five-O's first season, make sure you watch "Six Kilos" on Disc 7 (the last disc) before "The Box". Gerald S. O' Loughlin plays Carl Swenson in both. So the prisoner story The Box was a sequel to two episodes in that regard!

It's just like the CBS from that era to air so many episodes out of order.
They could never get away with that in this modern age.

Six Kilos may be the only un-remastered episode but it still looks good in spite of the film artifacts.
And Antoinette Bower in a bikini ain't bad either!

"Big Chicken" followed MacLeod to The Mary Tyler Moore Show, where the first-season finale, "The 45-Year-Old Man," (coincidentally?!?) featured a role by that name. Another balding actor, Richard Libertini, played the part then.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I just saw ... And They Painted Daisies On His Coffin with Gavin MacLeod's appearnce as Big Chicken. Amazing clarity on these DVD's. You can see the sweat on his neck drip onto his shirt collar. It would be interesting to learn if MacLeod was very hot in the Hawaiian climate, or they wanted him to be that sweaty for the character. Can't blame him seeing he was wearing a turtleneck and thin jacket.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

Big Chicken has his prisoner shirt opened for most of "The Box" too, but that's because he just finished a shower and there was no time to button it up.

This is a very disturbing discussion for us men to be having.

The answer to the ultimate fate of "Bored, She Hung Herself" should be known by July 31 (or thereabouts) !

Thanks to Dave Lambert for the news.

Re: Hawaii Five-O - Any Interest Out There?

I'll say a few things for the 2nd season.

"Forty Feet High....and it Kills!" brought Khigh Dhiegh back as Wo Fat back in grand style. Other guest stars: Will Geer as a kidnapped scientist and Sabrina Scharf as his gorgeous daughter add much to the story. The opening features one of the best choreographed chase scenes in Five-O history....and the music heard during that chase with the Chinese agents is one of my favorite melodies. Of course it would be re-used endlessly on the show for the next couple of years, but I never got tired of it.

"A Bullet for McGarrett" -- Wo Fat hires Eric Braeden (as a professor / hypnotist) who uses pretty young women to do his bidding. With Sheila Larken, the actress who would play Scully's mom in a number of episodes of The X-Files many years later!!

"The Singapore File" with guest star Marj Dusay is the first time since the first season's "Once Upon a Time" (Los Angeles) that McGarrett leaves Hawaii.

"Three Dead Cows at Makapuu" -- Another 2-parter that would have worked better as one episode! With Loretta Swit (who had great legs) as a telephone operator and Ed Flanders!

And I saw Blind Tiger when it was recently syndicated. Great episode with McGarrett dealing with the results of a bomb and Marion Ross guest starring. Looking forward to S2.

Hope they include any interviews with surviving cast members and featurettes/documentaries.

First Season - Back in Stock?

[from Usenet Five-O newsgroup]

I checked with my retailer today and found they just restocked the
title. That was a mighty quick action, but apparently there were back-
ups sitting in warehouses. It's just that the distribution outlets
they draw from never anticipated that pre-orders would fly it off the
shelf the way it did ... even Best Buy sold out in less than a week.
That's really impressive.

There is a lot of sweat visible in these remastered episodes. I even saw a few beads on Danny Williams' lip at one point.

Just curious -- does anyone know if these shows were shot on 35mm? I suspect the hand-held shots in the John Larch episode mentioned earlier (where he drills McGarrett on the beach) were shot with a 16mm camera.
