Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

Thanks Harry and Bob... Looking forward to checking out more eps of Voyage and The Fugitive... and sounds like I will have to get the first set of The Invaders as well.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Voyage to the Bottom of Sea: Season 2, Vol. 1
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: Season One, Vol. 1
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Season 1 Vol. 2

Pete, be sure to check out the CBS Paramount sale going on at Amazon right now. Each season of "The Invaders" is just $19.99; that's about as low a price as I've seen for this series. Forty bucks gets you the entire series, working out to less than a dollar an episode. Just be sure to order the sets individually rather than as a bundle (for which Amazon is charging another $10).

Now that really figures... thanks! I wish I would have seen that before I spent the last of my DVD Budget yesterday. And I just checked... what I ordered yesterday is already in the shipping process so can't cancel it.

Maybe it will still be on sale when I get paid again here in a couple weeks.

Pete:

Coming in a little late, and repeating some the insightful comments of others, you will enjoy everything you already have. And, you will also enjoy The Invaders.

There is a color version of the pilot, but the regular color episodes begin in the Second Season. There are also two major casting changes for that season.

The actor plying Chief Curly Jones died toward the end of the First Season, and so Chief Francis Sharkey was introduced for the Second Season. Sharkey proves to be an invaluable addition to the cast for the remainder of the series.

Sixties “surfer-dude-type” Stu Reilly is also introduced to become the “second featured crewman” after Kowalski in the same type of move that introduced “Beatle-type” Chekov to the Second Season of Star Trek TOS. Don’t cringe. He’s quite good… and a Sixties “surfer-dude-type” is far less annoying than an EIGHTIES “surfer-dude-type”. Trust me on that! The surfer-stuff is played down as the season progresses, anyway.

In addition, the iconic Flying Sub is introduced and propels the series forward like never before!

In the Second Season, VOYAGE shifts from a “Cold War / Espionage” start to a concentration on Sci-Fi. It’s still great for ALL of the season.

In fact, I heartily recommend that you get S2V2, as it contains some of my most favorite eps: “The Phantom Strikes”, “Graveyard of Fear”, “Killers of the Deep”, “The Mechanical Man”, “Shape of Doom”, “The Death Ship”, and “Return of the Phantom”.

For the Third Season, Reilly is gone (the actor was actually DRAFTED!), and Patterson (there since the beginning) becomes the “second featured crewman”. It also goes Sci-Fi / Fantasy for the remainder of the series. The Third Season is weakened by a “Monster of the Week” format, which is lessened to a more tolerable level for the Fourth Season.

In the final two seasons, the “Cold War / Espionage” focus of the First and early Second Seasons is gone – but the adventures remain action-packed, colorful and imaginative, if not outright exciting. Richard Basehart and David Hedison always play it straight, no matter what – to their and the show’s benefit.

We have aliens and time travel. Alchemists and volcanoes. Dinosaurs and saucer invasions. Infiltrators among the crew. Mind controlling forces. Ghost Ships. Doomsday bombs. Supernatural beings. Frozen Nazis. Mermaids. Yes, monsters! And, in the final episode, The Seaview explodes killing everyone… and THEN it finds itself at the American Revolution! (How can you not love something like THAT!)

There were many great episodes (…and, to be perfectly honest, some notable duds!) throughout the entire four year run – and probably the best special effects that the period could produce. By today’s standards, of course, it’s nothing to brag about, but it often beat such respected genre series as Star Trek TOS, The Invaders, and The Outer Limits by quite a bit.

Pete, I hope you continue to enjoy Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea for some time to come! Welcome aboard!

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I still don't understand why the big "Voyage" site on the net calls S1's "Hail To The Chief" a dull episode when IMO it's one of the best in the series, and also has the best guest cast ensemble of any Voyage episode (Viveca Lindfors, John Hoyt, Edward "Chief" Platt, James Doohan AND Nancy Kovack no less!). As the series went on and the budgets became cheaper you never saw that kind of guest cast depth that there was in S1 (and precious little in the way of good female guests).

I'm looking forward to completing the series at long last, but IMO it's too bad the show veered off-course from its espionage origins.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I just watched Episode #2...
The City Beneath the Sea
When ships begin to disappear in the Aegean Sea, Crane goes undercover and discovers a dazzling undersea city, and it's creator, Zeraff, a madman intent on ruling the world.

This was another really good episode that I enjoyed every minute of. I think I may have even enjoyed it more then the pilot episode. Well... at least as much as the pilot episode. Considering this is a series from the mid '60s the undersea city looked amazing. As did the explosions under the sea.

I fully agree and in view of what was to follow down the road, the thumbs down review is IMO unwarranted. But then they are critical of "Long Live the King" and I love viewing this outing (especially around Christmas). Let's face it, in S1 there is very little not to like. And the guest stars as you imply, really drive the show with their skillful acting abilities: Donald Harron in "Doomsday", George Sanders in "The Traitor", June Lockhart in "Ghost of Moby Dick". The list goes on and on.

And indeed, this set is supposed to contain yet another version of the pilot, "Eleven Days To Zero". I believe it will be another color version, this time with the original, non-standard, opening titles. Perhaps other surprises?

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I sure hope everyone has checked all the popular retailers out there on and off line. They are some very good buys for Voyage on line. I also test drove with the Robe which came out this past Tuesday. "The Robe" arrived on Tuesday just as if I had gone to the store. I know I cannot advocate any online retailer. I can only say the one I use is good on price with free shipping. I will also say they have never let me down. I ordered all of Dark Shadows from them after BB stopped having the show in store. I have an order for Peyton Place tv series from this on line retailer as well. Peyton Place was another show my good pals at BB said go online to get it. Battlestar Galacticas finale tonight however will be at BB in April. I hope Fox will announce soon when Volume 2 of Voyage season 4 will be out. I also wish the non Fox movie "City Beneath the Sea" would come out on DVD. Back to shore leave

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

Mark,
I did not know ther was a Voyage episode called
"The Robe".....(lol)!
as for "City Beneath The Sea", it is a Warner Brothers
property(made after Irwin left 20th for a brief period,
after which he went back to Fox for "The Poseiden
Adventure"), interestingly, CBTS is one of the top most
wanted movies requested to be put on DVD at Turner Classic Movies!
I have it recorded from syndicated TV about a dozen
years ago... and the quality is not that bad(which is
fortunate, considering that I don't think Warner's has any
plans to release this anytime soon).
I would second your vote for this movie to come out, though!

Cool. The first eight VTTBOTS Gold Key comic books originally published in the late 60s in a bound volume to be released in May, along with "Turok" and "Boris Karloff's Tales of Mystery". I had a few of the "Voyage" titles at one point, including the premiere issue. I wonder if they'll look as good as the DC Archives series of books.

Michael, I pre-ordered the TUROK and VOYAGE books from Dark Horse. The TUROK volume came today and while the reproduction isn't as nice as the DC Archives, I have enjoyed thumbing through it this evening. I had one of the old Gold Key VOYAGE comics years ago but it's no where to be found now. Oh well, these volumes should compensate for the loss nicely.

Gary "of course the VTTBOTS comics were not really anything like the TV show, but they were still neat" O.

I had approximately 100 various Gold Key titles that were tie-ins to vintage tv shows up until 10 years ago but lost them all in a storage fire. To think at one time I had MFU, "Invaders", "Lassie", "Rifleman", etc. Oh the pain. That's right, LIS too! So you're also interested in Silver Age comics--no surprise there, Gary.

Something else for you and all you other VTTBOTS fans to check out when you feel like dropping $100 or so:

Flying Sub Model by Moebius at FAB Gear!

FS-1 with 13.5" wingspan. Wow. I was quite the scale modeler back in the day and I think I could be swayed quite easily into taking up the hobby again after looking at this!

Yep, Michael. I'm a pretty big GA and SA fan. And I'm not surprised you are either. What an incredible collection of Gold Key comics you had. So sorry you lost them in a fire. Ugh, that had to hurt. The thing I always loved about many of the GK comics were the covers. The Wally Wood TUROK covers were always just incredible to me.

Gary "I should have known you were a GK comics fan, Michael - you're too nice a guy not to be" O.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

these two will look good next to each other:

maybe I should buy the movie(I have the one that
was coupled with "Fantastic Voyage", but I don't
think it is as good a quality as the re-released disc).
I used to have some of those Voyage comics, though and was
always a bit disapointed that they did not have those nifty 'photo' covers,
that Gold Key was pretty famous for.
by the way, does anybody remember the Pocket Book paperback
novels that were put out based on "Voyage"....?
there was the one(based on the movie?) by Theodore Sturgeon
and then another(rarer) entitled "City Under The Sea", which was based
on the TV series.I never got my hands on that second one,
but I had the ones for: Lost In Space(1 novel), Land Of The Giants(3,
although I believe there were 4), Time Tunnel(2 novels) and
The Invaders(2 novels....that second one was a doozy, I remember that)!
there were also Big Little Books and Whitman books of some
of these shows.
all are going for much more $ nowadays.

Had it. Nice B&W photo cover of the cast from the tv show, taken from "Eleven Days to Zero", I believe. Mine was autographed by Mr. Sturgeon no less when I met him in 1976. But, well...did I mention a fire...?

And Gary, you are so right about the old Dell/Gold Key painted covers. "The Phantom", "Doctor Solar--Man of the Atom", "Turok, Son of Stone" and so many others...just beautiful to behold.

Yep, I should have said Dell (often Four Color) & Gold Key because those first Turok's, along with many other titles, were Dell before being GK.

Gary "I'd love to have a hardcover of just those old Dell/GK covers - that would be a sight to behold" O.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I did not mean to confuse folks with my reference to the Movie The Robe and Voyage. My mission was to inform fans who are waiting for the March 31st release that I know of no way to buy season 4 except on line. The Robe was a example of how fast my on line retailer is. CBTS I knew the history behind it I just was hoping and glad now to learn some people would like it released.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I think that Voyage s4 WILL be available at Fry's Electronics,
I don't think they are operating by Best Buy's strategy:
'we don't stock it anymore, so we can watch our sales plummet'!
p.s., Mark: I would buy "City Beneath The Sea" the day of release,
if only Warner would get their act together and put it out already!

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

did anyone here see the in-depth articles that were about
"The Making of VTTBOTS series" that were featured in two issues
of Starlog magazine in the Nineties?
they included(among other things), interviews with surviving
writers of the show and about the episodes that were planned,
but(for various reasons),were never produced:
-"The Surfers"(season 2)
-"King Pearl"(season 2)
-"The Diamond Man"(supposed to be the last episode of
season 4, but they stopped production at "No Way Back")
I liked these articles very much, even though some of the writers
were 'less than kind' about their experiences writing for this show
(it seems like alot of writers of vintage shows are bitter for some
reason, maybe because these things have stood the 'test of time')?

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

David I caught my CBTS when it aired on TBS morning movie over 20 years ago. I also watched it when it first aired on NBC as a pilot for a new show. I also thought maybe there would not be the disaster genre if the pilot had been a success. I enjoyed all of it and seeing the flying sub and even Seaview was fun. I did not know about the Voyage information you provided here on writers and episodes. I just did not want fans to come up empty handed and have to wait two weeks for ordering. Just because they thought some of the chain stores that handle video might have it. I also forgot to mention I even checked with my on line retailer about possible back orders causing delay. I was informed they could handle the order with no problem. Thanks for the info on the Voyage aritcles sounded very interesting. Have a good week end everyone!

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

There are many connections between the CITY BENEATH THE SEA movie and the older Irwin Allen productions. The presence of Richard Basehart from VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA, Robert Colbert, James Darren, and Whit Bissell all from TIME TUNNEL, and much of the set even.

I've attached a picture from the film where one can observe a window on "Pacifica", the frame of which is actually a section of the old Time Tunnel itself!

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I thought the casting on CBTS that all that was cool. I bet he would of used Lee Meriwether for the lead actress but did not for some reason. I have a book published back in 92 that covers Tunnel and Voyage. Another just for Tunnel. I found the reviews David mentioned and all the unshown episodes except Diamond Man. I wonder if they planed to use the big diamond shown in the batcave in Marsha Queen of Diamons episode. I found the writers thumbing thru this book. They speak for themselves. I have the view master reels on Voyage two sets. The same for Tunnel. I always rated Irwin Allen shows for me. Ist Time then Voyage Lost and lastly Land. I like most watched Batman which gave Lost a dent in their rateings leading to their demise. Voyage resyndicated here in the 1987-88 season and some first season in 93. They are quite differrent from SCFI version. There is nice footage of Seaview and Flying Sub together art work announcing Voyage will be back then next week on Voyage kinda cool. Even put commercial here. In color Voyage also at start of show. I realy missed that on Tunnels DVDs. Said enough. Would be cool to announce here when we receive our Dvd. Back to shore leave.
