How could a Voyage fan miss spell Richard Baseharts name all fans please forgive me. I also see Amazon is running a sale on the first 3 years of Voyage and they have the preorder site up for the March release date of season 4.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

According to the Twentieth press release over at TV Shows on DVD,

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD news: Press Release for Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea - Season 4, Vol 1 | TVShowsOnDVD.com

...the specs for the Season One, Volume 4 set say this:

Quote:
DVD Features:
The "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" Season Four, Volume One three-disc DVD collection includes the first 13 episodes of the final season presented in full screen format (4x3 1.33 aspect ratio) with English, Spanish and French Mono sound and English, Spanish and French subtitles...

What caught my eye was the last sentence mentioning English, Spanish and French Mono sound with no mention of the "stereo" sound of prior releases.

Far be it from me to complain, and I'm not, as I'm not a fan of those wonky fake stereo soundtracks anyway. It's just an observation.

Keen observation there, Harry. Myself, I had to snicker at the comments on "...the unparalleled genius of producer Irwin Allen kicked into creative overdrive..." as well as ."...setting new standards for suspense, vision and imagination."

Don't get me wrong--I love the series for Basehart and Hedison, the hardware, underwater photography, sets and more but as I was reading this I was envisioning David Hedison in the "Years 1-4" interview saying something like: "Well, when Richard and me heard that 'Voyage' was being renewed for a 4th season, our joint response was, 'Please, not another year of rubber-suited monsters!'"

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

Well just look at this marvellous promotional still for the VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA episode "The Deadly Dolls" (01/10/1967) nobody shown looks especially unhappy in it!

I had an extensive conversation with David Hedison and David frankly told me that the one aspect that he was particularly unhappy about toward the end was the severely deminished production budgets. To use David's owns words they were done "very cheaply." He may even mention this in the oncamera interviews when he discusses the fourth season (1967-68) in particular.

Actually take a good look at the third season (1967-68) of LOST IN SPACE which was (generally) done very much on the cheap and this will give you a good indication of just what can be expected albeit somehow VOYAGE (at least in my own estimation) still maintains higher standards and succeeds as better entertainment than SPACE.

The presence of "monsters" on the show weren't necessarily a bad thing to cite a good example look at the excellent "The Menfish" (06/03/1966) one of my own personal favourites.

But when you have self-defeating (or demeaning) aspects like puppets, plants and leprechauns then that's another matter entirely.

I am really pleased that 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment has gotten behind this upcoming VOYAGE season four DVD set and is (rightfully) treating it like one of the company's important releases.

At least there be a fleeting glimmer of first season (1964-65) grandeur with the inclusion of the unaired colour pilot "Eleven Days to Zero" (14/09/1964).

I had to laugh when I read that Season Four finally "submerges" onto DVD

Fair enough if they're going to use submarine phrases, but one would have thought that "surfaces" would have been better than the implication that S4 is about to sink into the depths.

On the other hand, given the way that Fox treated the releases, maybe "submerges" is about right!

Snicker away, if you must, BUT…

The fact that so many of us still care about – and continue to be inspired by – Irwin Allen’s television programs of FORTY YEARS AGO...

That there are 905 replies and 82,913 views of this thread (how many other threads can make this claim?)…

And that so many of us were miserable or outright angry when VOYAGE looked as if it were being abandoned by FOX…

Sure speaks to the “unparalleled genius of Irwin Allen” to me!

No one combined adventure, fun, and flat-out oddity as perfectly as Irwin Allen… and no one ever will. Even in view of great modern series like LOST (…and how much of Allen’s legacy turns up there in subtle and wonderful ways?), Allen’s brand of television will always be first and foremost in my heart.

Here, here! Well said!

As much as I appreciate serious and thoughtful science fiction and adventure programming, there's something intriguing about the always-entertaining fantasy worlds of Irwin Allen.

As silly as the silliest episodes of some of his shows can be, there's always something about each of those episodes that just pushes the right buttons for legions of fans.

A Dr. Smith line here, a rubber-suited monster there, a time paradox or a fanciful special effect - something in every show has that little bit of magic that brings out the kid in all of us.

Though I was never the world's biggest VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA fan when it aired, nor over the years with those miserable syndication prints, I've been delighted with the DVD's of the series so far, and am quite anxious to get on with the proceedings as the fourth and final season presents itself to us in 2009.

Yes, I think "unparalleled genius" is just about the right term to describe Mr. Allen, even though he turned out to be his own worst enemy at times.

I do like "intelligent" Science Fiction. But I also really enjoy the whimsical, fantasy Sci-Fi that most of Irwin Allen's Stuff represents.

I certainly enjoy it more than todays self conscious, colorless and packaged to jump start at geek following shows of today.

Well, no one needs to convince me of this. I've been a frequent poster on this thread over the last 4 years and have made nearly unanimously favorable comments about the series. VTTBOTS is a firm favorite of mine and even now I'm screening S1 episodes for at least the third time now and looking forward to S2. All I'm saying is that, well, "wordsmithing" can be taken to fun extremes sometimes.

I admire what Irwin Allen accomplished with the 4 major SF series of the 60s and have been a big fan of most of them (save for LOTG). He knew how to scope out talent for SFX, set design, costuming, etc. and his ability to stretch a dollar is legion. But let's be honest--he was first and foremost a showman and certainly a rather inconsistent producer. Fiery effects, lavish sets and sheer spectacle weighed on his mind at all times (going as far back as "The Price of Doom" where he badgered the director about the "plankton beast") while incisive commentary was nearly always given a back seat. This is why Harlan Ellison disowned his own script and why Richard Basehart had rather low opinions on Allen overall. It's rather fascinating to me that Allen tended to contradict his own philosophy on tv entertainment, by having the kind of actors, in particular, Richard Basehart, that could have delivered the goods (and did rather sublimely in some S1 episodes), but for the most part were given paper thin roles, thereby throwing away a grand opportunity for them to really showcase their mettle.

Yes, VTTBOTS in S3 and S4 in particular, overall makes for very appealing escapist eye candy. But it's hard for me sometimes to watch the episodes without lamenting "what might have been" if more of a premium had been placed on scripting the series with a more serious tone throughout its run, like the better episodes of S1. But I shouldn't really have to explain this since numerous posters over the last few years have echoed the same sentiments.

It's funny because I never was able to see these shows as a kid (only a bit of Lost In Space). As a 1970's kid it was Star Trek, Space:1999, Six Million Dollar Man, etc (all great favorites of mine). So while seeing these for some is a nostalgic treat, for me it's a nostalgic treat that should've been. I watch it, enjoying it as the person I am today but also as how I would've enjoyed it had I been able to see it in the midst of all those other shows I cut my teeth on.

That's part of my feeling too. VOYAGE and LAND OF THE GIANTS were both on the air during my later teenage years, and should have been right up my alley. But both also aired Sunday evenings at 7 PM which turned out to be a problem time slot for me and my family.

Thus, many of these shows went unseen by me. The ones I DID manage to catch were fun and I always regretted not being able to be in front of the TV on Sunday nights for that reason.

This of course was WAY before any kind of video recorders. If you missed the show - that was it. Unless you happened to catch a rerun, it was gone forever.

These DVD sets have made the old inaccessible, accessible, so it was somewhat disconcerting to have this long break between seasons 3 and 4. But now that's it announced, I can wait the 100 or so days till release day and look forward to continuing my VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA.

SOME PERSONAL REFLECTIONS!!!!!

Everyone tends to think of their own favourite tv series as being something special.

Well I have addressed this before but essentially speaking this is NOT a SF genre discussion forum and the fact that this particular discussion thread (and THE INVADERS) have done so well in online public interest (and response) is extraordinary to say the least!

I once read that the Irwin Allen 1960s SF tv series were deemed as being "hokey" but just what does that mean?!

When the Irwin Allen shows first started they were quite extraordinary in their own right. In that sense the 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment print literature evalution of the man (or more appropriately his SF tv series) is perfectly valid.

Enduring SF tv classics like THE TWILIGHT ZONE, THE OUTER LIMITS and THE INVADERS (in contrast to the rest of the television enui) are anything but hokey.

To me hokey are all the tiresome westerns, cop shows and sitcoms ad nauseum that have overwhelmingly inundated the tv airwaves since the medium's inception. SF entertainment certainly tends to be the antithesis of this!

But pertaining to the final season of VOYAGE in retrospect it is of importance (and interest) in that it is the last that we see of our classic characters...something which in my own harsh assessment I have overlooked!

In the fourth season (1967-68) there tends to be some charmingly disarming humour introduced (ie. "A Time to Die" and "No Way Back") far more so than the three previous seasons which serves to endear these classic characters even further.

It is in its fourth year that VOYAGE hits the 100 mark certainly a landmark achievement of distinction during the Golden Age of SF TV Series!

And as I said the final season does adequately end on a positive note.

I have also forgotten that these will be newly restored and digitally remastered video transfers taken from the original 35mm print negatives which may alter one's less-than-enthusiast perceptions about these episodes.

But speaking from an "informed" opinion I really have to say that overall I tend to prefer the third season (1966-67) in comparison to the fourth season the former which consistently exhibits more competency (or quality) and energetic vitality in its presentations. Whatever one makes of "The Fossil Men" (22/01/1967) the rock-like beings in this diverting opus are far better done than the dismally wretched extraterrestrial seen in "The Lobster Man" (21/01/1968).

Point-of-fact if you take note and examine it carefully the latter was merely a recycled costume (minus the insect-like wings and painted a dull rusty red) of a Centauri alien previously seen in "Journey with Fear" (15/10/1967) which looked much more impressive.

In reference to the inclusion of an unaired, recut version of the VOYAGE pilot "Eleven Days to Zero" (14/09/1964) there is no specific indication to it being produced in colour...it just may well turn out to be a variation of the black-and-white televised version!

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

It brings back happy memories of the school summer holidays to me. The show was a regular in the "children's summer morning TV" - I can't remember whether it was shown once a week, or more, but I think it was more - maybe every weekday. This show was ideal because, as with Lost In Space there was an enormous number of episodes available.

The show was shown by Sci-Fi Channel here in the UK some while back, but I didn't have access to that until well into the latter end of Season Four (and there were an annoying couple of days when we got it, but it was wrongly left encrypted, so I could hear but not see The Lobster Man!).

Fox Channel more recently ran Seasons One and Two (about ten times each), and promised (in an email) to be showing Three and Four, but sadly they got "rebranded" and out went Batman, Lost In Space, Land of the Giants and Time Tunnel (all of which got at least one full run though) and in came the inevitable endless runs of Buffy, NCIS and the rest (needless to say, I never bother with "FX" anymore....

But package art has been missing from this mission...until now, that is! The studio has finally made it available to us, and we've got a look at it for you:

It appears from that pic that the box style is going to be different then the previous releases. Rather than the card board box with the individual dvd slim cases, this looks like its one of those that you open and it's got flip dvd holders.

Not that it matters to me im buying it on release date! It's just not going to match the rest of the seasons sitting on my shelf.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

Remember that the front cover art for the individual disc jackets inside is identical to that of the card box.

However, it does appear that the picture shows the spine as well, and thus it can't be one of those "thinkpak" inner casers - but rather a larger three disc "Amaray" style case.

Moreover, the spine seems to be missing the small "portrait" at the bottom, which has been replaced by a "4" which wasn;t on any of the previous releases.

It will be disappointing indeed if Fox have changed the design for just the final releases: we must hope that this is a provisional one. Perhaps it's cheaper than a card case...or maybe it;s been so long they just forgot what the others were like!

It's irnonic that some effort seems to have been made to match the front "SEASON FOUR - VOLUME ONE" lettering whilst changing the spine design and the case.

I have to say, I really dislike that picture of the Seaview. The previous releases had some very nice images - which were either photographs made to look like artwork, or photo-real art, whilst this one looks more like an image drawn from a (cheap) comic book.

As well as having octopus tentacles from a previous season. Not that other covers haven't had things on them that aren;t actually in the episodes inside!

I'm not crazy about circa '66 "lunch box" styled cover, but as long as both volumes of S4 make it, I'm happy.

Heck, they can even use this image for vol. 2:

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

The package art actually looks similar to the art that was used for the original
movie.

I do think the declining budgets created major headaches for Irwin Allen. Then you have actors asking for raises for the new season. That might have been one of the reasons why Irwin Allen passed on a 5th season of Voyage in favor of Land of the Giants which I believe was the most expensive tv show on at that time.

Another habit Allen had was re-using the monster suits on Lost In Space and Voyage. On a Fantasy Worlds of Irwin Allen, Bill Mumy commented that the monster would be on the set of Lost In Space one week and roaming the corridors of Seaview or vice versa next week.

I do believe the 4th season was a huge improvement over the third season. We saw more suspenseful shows like Man of Many Faces. The Deadly Dolls was an excellent episode with a wonderful performance by Vincent Price. It's a shame this episode doen't have a commentary with it. Man-Beast was in the style of a third season show but was better scripted and Lawrence Montaigne gave a good performance. Henry Jones gives two wonderful performances as Mr Pem. Cave of the Dead is another successful ghost story. Fires of Death brings in alchemy. There were clunkers and Lobster Men was probably the clunkiest.

I've heard that Hedison hated the monster of the week shows but I find it interesting that his favorite is Man-Beast which is conceptually very similar to the monster of the week that dominated 3rd season. Hedison lobbyed successfully to play the monster himself. There was definately dissatisfaction with the scripts. A group of Japanes visitors came to the set. Basehart went to the toilet and suggested this is where the scripts come from.

As for Voyage's place in history, it is hokey. Being hokey is not bad. Twilight Zone and Outer Limits are full course meals but Voyage is like a candy bar. It may not be nutritous but it is a lot of fun.

As for the pilots, I have seen three. One is the black and white version that was aired and another is the color version of that. The third one is color but the opening titles are completely different. It looks like it might have been the original pilot that was used to sell the show. The original pilot was shot in color and I would think it unlikely that they would have cut a second black and white version of a color pilot.

Darned if you aren't correct there, Francis. The Seaview as shown is a mirrow image of what appeared on the 1961 poster, once again featuring the customary alteration of the nose windows.

FOUR WEEKS TO GO Until Season 4 Volume 1

In FOUR WEEKS we will have VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA Season Four, Volume One! And, to prime you all, I’ve revived this thread – and look forward to the day we will get Season Four, Volume TWO, and we can abandon this venerable thread for good!

For now, though, I’ll repeat the list of highlights to be found in this volume, and will be back as we draw closer to the release date!

Hope you all enjoy the set as much as I will!

Highlights to come in Season Four, Volume One:

Victor Jory and the depths of a volcano (“Fires of Death”).

Vincent Price (“Deadly Dolls”) ‘Nuff said!

Warren Stevens, one of Sci-Fi’s great character actors and the Flying Dutchman (“Cave of the Dead”).

An improbable, but imaginative, trip to Venus (“Journey with Fear”) features a vastly reconfigured Seaview!

Disappearing crewman – including Richard Basehart’s SON (always cut on Sci-Fi Channel) – and a ticking doomsday bomb (“Sealed Orders”)

Season Two style suspense with a dash of Season Four improbability (“Man of Many Faces”)

Janos Prohaska (Star Trek’s Mugato and others) redressed as a rampaging white gorilla. (“Fatal Cargo”)

Nelson is kidnapped to the future. If you liked TIME TUNNEL’S “The Kidnappers”, you’ll like this – it’s just about the same thing, by the same writer. (“Time Lock”)

Cat and Mouse with stock footage of The Vulcan, Season Three’s “special guest enemy submarine” (“Rescue”)

Alien plant controls Nelson. Yeah, we’ve seen it before and done better – but there is a great battle between the Seaview and the Flying Sub (“Terror”)

Time-Master Mr. Pem invades the Seaview. (“A Time to Die”) Henry Jones is marvelously unassuming in the role! This episode’s sequel is the series finale.

Basehart gets to “stretch” as a dangerously paranoid Nelson. (“Blow Up”). He does a wonderful job. Consider how Shatner would have overacted something like this.

Season Three’s “Fossil Men” recast with amphibians. (“Deadly Amphibians”). Soon to be LAND OF THE GIANTS star (and two time LOST IN SPACE guest star) Don Matheson lurks within the “head amphibian” suit.

The opening credits sequence changes with EPISODE NINE (!). Paul Sawtell’s classic theme is slowed and given a more brass and bass sound – and a freeze frame teaser to match the one created for that year's LOST IN SPACE – begins with “Rescue” (but is not included in “Blow Up”).

I AM disappointed that we will complete the series with none of the “Next Week Scenes”. That would have been a better extra than more stills… BUT it looks as if we WILL complete the series and that is cause for celebration.
