When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!! - Page 29

THEY HAVE ALREADY STARTED!!!!!

Quote:
"Fox doesn't license any shows out. No reason to believe they are going to start now."--Hank Dearborn.

Why not?!

20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment previously released (at various stages) all four Irwin Allen 1960s SF tv series through Columbia House.

More recently the 20th Century-Fox Television produced made-for-television film THE NORLISS TAPES (1973) was issued through Anchor Bay Entertainment on a DVD release.

A couple of years back there was an online item (somewhere) about 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment licensing some of its film and television catalogue through Anchor Bay Entertainment...indeed some of us thought that a DVD release of VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA was going to come out from Anchor Bay!

Both Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Sony have issued some of their tv series catalogue to outside parties a fairly recent innovative trend that will likely catch on with the other major DVD distribution companies...especially pertaining to their older tv series catalogues!

In other words it is way to early to adamently state that a company like Fox Home Entertainment will not similarly follow suit...especially if it has something to definitely gain from such an arrangement!

I was talking with a local downtown DVD retailer and questioned him about the apparent abandonment of the VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA tv series DVD release.

This informed individual (who is in constant contact with the major DVD distribution companies and knowledgeable individuals in the industry) said that he doesn't think that VOYAGE has been abandoned but currently 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment is (primarily) focussing on its feature film catalogue especially the MGM-United Artists film catalogue that it has recently acquired access to putting its own tv series properties (temporarily) aside for the interim.

If you backtrack the previous message post in this discussion thread I myself mentioned that 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment is "vigorously" concentrating on its film DVD releases as well!

He also said that Paramount Pictures-CBS Television Home Entertainment fully intends to resume the HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL tv series DVD collection with the release of the fourth season (1960-61) albeit no definite date has been scheduled for this!

At least for the present VOYAGE fans have been making their interest known about a (possible) DVD release of the fourth season and there remains nothing more to be done but to stay the course and continue lobbying until Fox Home Entertainment deems it the appropriate time to resume and complete the final outstanding season.

There is still the option of an "outside" second party release but for now let's give 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment the benefit of the doubt.

For someone like me who is seeing this show for the first time through DVD, I am very much looking forward to the 4'th season.

Especially since I heard they used the Mugato creature suit from Star Trek in one of the episodes in the forth season.

Am I mistaken (and I certainly could be), or are the "Four Star Productions" series (BURKE'S LAW, HONEY WEST and ZANE GREY THEATRE) loan-outs from Fox to VCI? Not that I'm expecting VTTBOTS Season 4 to ever to be a VCI release...

Peter, I just received the first set of "Burke's Law" this past weekend and have watched the entire first disc. Not that this necessarily means anything, but there is no reference whatsoever to Fox. The copyright on the back of the DVD cover is attributed to "Four Star - Barbety" which I confirmed at the US Copyright Office. Possibly some of the Four Star series are in independent hands, though Fox did release a season and a half of another Four Star series "The Big Valley." The Four Star logo appears at the end of both "Burke's Law" and "The Big Valley."

In any event, I have sent Clifford Weimer, who wrote a portion of the notes on the insert of "Burke's Law," an E-mail asking what entity licensed "Burke's Law" to VCI. If I hear anything, I'll post here. This ownership thing can be a bit confusing!

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

Peter, Bob, interesting info about Four Star. There are several titles that I'd be interested in getting if this is a trend to get some shows out of the Fox vault.

I wonder.....remember Hank mentioning about some low-key whispering in the industry grapevine about some outsourcing possibly coming soon?

THE MUGATO!!!!!

Yes that's absolutely right!

The white gorilla designed and portrayed by the late Janos Prohaska in the VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA episode "Fatal Cargo" was latter recycled with the conspicuous additions of a horn, a tail and spiny dorsals fins sticking out of its back for the Mugato (also portrayed by Mr. Prohaska) in the STAR TREK episode "A Private Little War."

The discussion on the former Four Star Television Productions brings up the distinct possibility that 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment has (likely) licensed out both BURKE'S LAW and HONEY WEST to VCI Entertainment.

Surely these shows are all part of the same identical tv property catalogue.

I inquired about THE BIG VALLEY DVD releases with this knowledgable local downtown DVD retailer over the weekend and he told me that 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment gave it very limited distribution specifically citing that in Canada it was an "import" commodity.

This translates that Fox Home Entertainment realistically had very modest expectations for it...and likely it performed no better than anticipated!

FOUR STAR PRODUCTIONS!!!!!

I received shipment of the BURKE'S LAW - FIRST SEASON, VOLUME ONE 4-disc set and there is NO mention of 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment at least not on the packaging.

Perhaps we are looking at this all wrong! Perhaps Fox Home Entertainment merely liscensed THE BIG VALLEY from the current copyright holder of the former Four Star Television Productions.

Any way the Anchor Bay Entertainment DVD release of the made-for-television film THE NORLISS TAPES (1973) most definitely had the 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment logo on the back of the packaging.

My immediate thought on reading that article was - I bet it won't include Fox.

Incidentally, it's interesting to note that as yet there has been nothing more on any further releases of The Simpsons. Even though there was speculation about an August release on TVShowsOnDVD a while back.

So it's not just Voyage that's on hold.

No doubt they'll continue releasing Recycled-Plots-Gate/Atlantis and I also note an attempt to flog Prison Break on BluRay. Wanna take any bets as to how long it's going to take for Angel and Buffy to get dug out yet again?

Not that I'm not grateful for any tidbit of info Gord and Dave can pass our way - I am, but what we got today didn't seem like much to me. What I got from the news item was simply that Fox hasn't officially abandoned the 4th season. But they also haven't committed to finishing the series 100%, according to the article. Kinda a wait and see thing.

I'm glad this story was posted. I'd rather know that FOX hasn't given up on the final season of Voyage and are considering a 2009 release, than not knowing anything at all. There is still hope for Season 4 and I can wait until next year.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but it Seems outside of CBS-Paramount and Timeless, No one is doing stready releases of Western TV shows. (and CBS-P is sitting on "Bonanza" and "Have Gun,Will Travel"!)

"Sometime in 2009 hopefuly-maybe"

Not exactly reassuring!

And it means we're going to have to wait at least another seven months...and probably a lot longer than that.

I wish they hadn't spent so much on the LOTG set. I'd rather have had a standard release of that and the remainder of Voyage.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

It isn't that reassuring to me either. If it is still on their radar, why does it take until 2009 maybe? Is something going on at Fox that is slowing down dvd releases?

Hey! We Can Get This Sub Off The Bottom!

While I’m not ready to tell the pessimists among us to change their views just yet, I’m very pleased to hear – from FOX itself, no less – that VOYAGE will continue… even if we must wait until 2009 for it to happen.

As I was the one who (back in Post #803 of this thread) drew parallels between the seemingly slowed release schedule of VOYAGE with what also appeared to be a slowed release schedule for THE SIMPSONS, I’m doubly pleased that my (admittedly complete and total) conjecture that FOX was slowing their TV DVD release schedule in general appears to have been accurate.

Yes, I’d hoped that VOYAGE would continue, if not complete, during 2008 – as prior releases indicated it would – but I’ll settle for next year.

I’d also hope that FOX compensates for this gap by issuing a Complete Season Four release. By this point in the series, anyone who wants it will go for the larger package. Anyone simply looking to sample the series, out of fuzzy memories (as I happily did with THE INVADERS) or for a Blind Buy, has SIX half-season volumes to choose from.

Again, if that all-important Price Point is of primary consideration to FOX, I’ll take it in two volumes – BOTH (I would assume) to be released in 2009. Say January/February and August/September.

An Extra I’d like to see on these final volumes would be the inclusion of the “Next Week Scenes” for the show. These were exciting 30 second bites of action clips from the episode, most often backed with Jerry Goldsmith’s various cues from “Jonah and the Whale” and other familiar VOYAGE scores -- and fronted by a sound bite by the Voice on the opening credits (Scott Mc Fadden?) to the tone of “NEXT WEEK… THE MEN OF THE SEAVIEW FACE DEATH WHEN THEY ENCOUNTER…” Richard Basehart (most often) or David Hedison (rare, and later in the series) would invite us to "...stay tuned for scenes from our next episode".

FOX did this for LOST IN SPACE Season Three and, for all the wonderful things they did for LAND OF THE GIANTS, did not include them for that series. I don’t even know if such next week scenes were done for Season One. But I know they exist for Seasons 2-4. What a great overview of the series it would be to include ALL of them – to “Play All” or select from a menu – as a parting gift to us. I can dream, can’t I?

Finally, and most important, thanks are due to Gord Lacey of tvshowsondvd.com – as it appears that it was he (or David Lambert) who posed the VOYAGE question to FOX. I’ve said in previous posts that it might be meaningful if someone at FOX were to SEE the “eight-hundred-and-something” posts that this VOYAGE thread has amassed, as an indicator of our interest in bring the series to completion.

Well, Gord appears to have made FOX aware of our interest… and maybe that’s why we’ll be having a brighter 2009! Thanks, Gord. Thanks, David! Keep up the great work!

Its a trickle down effect. Bad economy means people aren't buying as many DVD's as normal which means the studios aren't going to put out new releases as fast.
I still consider this a positive. If Fox didn't plan to release Season 4 then they wouldn't even comment on it.

The voice-work for VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA was handled by Ray Didsbury, who also played as an extra on the Seaview set in many episodes. He also served as a voice coach for the series, and as a stand-in for Richard Basehart.

Mr. Didsbury recently celebrated a birthday, and JeffT. and I worked on getting some screengrabs of him up on the Yahoo Time Tunnel Fan Forum site. This is one of those pictures of Ray Didsbury in one of his appearances on VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA:

Thanks for the correction and the photo, Harry! "Ray" was certainly one of the familiar faces in the red and blue jumpsuits. Wasn't he killed on-screen at least once ("Doomsday Island")? Probably more times.

I knew he was Basehart's stand-in, but not that he was the announcer as well. I guess you wore a lots of hats for Irwin Allen... look at Dick Tufeld!

Virtually everything I know about VOYAGE I've learned from JeffT. and the Internet in general. I was never a huge fan back in the '60s - we watched it when we could, but the early Sunday timeslot was difficult for us. As such, I never really followed the series all that much.

Since the DVD's have come out, I've really learned to love the first two seasons at least. I was expecting "awful" from season three, but found it surprisingly good at times. I'm probably not expecting all that much from season four, but would love to have it for completeness sake.

I'm content to wait for Fox to do whatever it is they have to do to get it out there, and whenever. If it's 2009, so be it. I've waited this long. Another year or so won't make all that much of a difference.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

As I pointed out earlier - The Simpsons is looking increasingly unlikely for it's rumoured August release. Normally, Fox post pre-release dates three months ahead, usually in the first week of the month: hence, any Auguest release should have been announced in May. It hasn't been.

So I think there's a general slowdown in DVD releases at Fox - and indeed most studios - but particularly Fox. I don't think Voyage has been singled out - it includes big franchise titles also. They're likely sticking to big sellers like Recycled-Plots-Gate/Atlantis...

It doesn;t help that the general economic outlook - not just in the US - is not conducive to these releases. If people can;t afford petrol, they aren;t buying DVD's.

The news is better than I had feared, but worse than I hoped...

Breaking down seasons 3 and 4 into quartets (as the sets have been released), I would rank them in terms of quality as follows:

S4 - 1st half
S3 - 1st half
S4 - 2nd half
S3 - 2nd half

The last two seasons are fairly interchangeable in terms of quality of writing, effects, etc., but I give the nod overall to S4.

Michael:

I completely agree with your ranking.

Season Four came strong out of the gate with "Fires of Death" (Maybe the best of the season), "The Deadly Dolls" (with Vincent Price), "Cave of the Dead", "Man of Many Faces", and "Time Lock". Henry Jones' rascally villain Mr. Pem will also be represented on S4, V1 with "A Time To Die".

Season Four Volume One will be a good collection. I don't relish Volume Two beginning with "Return of Blackbeard" and "Terrible Leprechaun", though.

Irwin Allen tended to bury his "dogs" in mid season. That why we have VOYAGE S3, V2 beginning with "Brand of the Beast" and LOST IN SPACE S2, V2 beginning with "The Questing Beast". And why VOYAGE S4, V2, will begin with the lesser lights named above.

Who am I kidding.. I want 'em ALL! But, yeah, the second volume of each of the last two seasons does finish behind the first volumes of same.

FOURTH SEASON NEXT WEEK PREVIEWS!!!!!

Because it wasn't done with the second season (1965-66) VOYAGE episodes I completely gave up on the idea of a possible inclusion of the next week previews as bonus extras.

But if it (still) isn't too late it would certainly be great to have this done for the (impending?) fourth season (1967-68) VOYAGE DVD release.

I think that it would pose too many logistical problems to (further) include the next week previews for all the second and third (1966-67) seasons as well...but who knows?!

The first three episodes of VOYAGE from its debut season (1964-65) had a collection of previews from upcoming episodes to be telecast and these were (disappointingly) not included as well!

While it is minor I would like a complete and intact (fully restored and digitally remastered) video transfer of the unaired colour pilot "Eleven Days to Zero" (14/09/1964) with its correct main title included as special bonus extra.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to have some of the original ABC Television Network promos thrown in for (extra) good measure as well!

Jeff:

Why couldn't ALL the "Next Week Promos" be strung together and offered as a "Play All" or individual menu selections. Maybe even segregate them by Season - with a "Play All" option for each Season. You can see something similar to this in the TIME TUNNEL cast interview and promo segments.

There are a number of network promos that would also be nice to have in one place. I particularly like the early Third Season one (with footage from "Day of Evil" and others), and the one that combines first season footage of Lloyd Bochner (from "The Fear Makers") with a sort of intro of the Flying Sub from the Second Season.

It would be a wonderful parting gift to the fans... and there's probably only so much unused remaining David Hedison interview footage left. Though they HAVE been parsing it out carefully!

I don't see it happening, especially as this would be the end of the line for VOYAGE - and there is no necessity to "cultivate" buyers for future releases... but it's nice to dream.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I actually have vcds of some of the episodes and they have the coming next week promos. Love it. They really don't have to be re-mastered for me.

I would think The Simpsons is part of Fox's franchise releases. If this is not getting releases then there is a slowdown at Fox. I would think franchises would get priority even in a slow economy.

I know there is the aired black and white pilot. There is the color version of the aired pilot. There is also one that doesn't use the first season opening credits.
