Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

IMHO the transfers look fantastic, like they were done yesterday
Wonder what the deal was, that they had to:
1. use Goldsmiths score for just one episode.
2. Use season ones opening credits of the sub rising a amidst a torrrent of bubbles-which gave it real scale.
Anyone notice that for the first couple episodes, they used both the old 8 window and the new 4 window Seaview?
a gripe:
the the "bonus" special effects scenes are a joke-
6out-takes of a wolfman glaring throught the windows, 6 outtakes of the obviously 8 inch Seaview model resting on the bottom of an aquarium. 6 takes on the LOST IN SPACE 'Kelp creature' misshandling the Flying sub...etc
and the same for a couple of other things.

2 or each would have been plenty, since they were all pretty much identical.
I would love a docu on the seaview-how it ws bulit, various close up shots and effects work from LB Abbott-I

The one time use of Goldsmith's theme goes back to 1965. Irwin Allen disliked this theme and had the tried and true Sawtell theme reinstated with the next episode, "Time Bomb". However, Goldsmith's theme does appear in the closing credits for this outing.

The first eight episodes and again in episode #10 the opening shot of the 8 window Seaview as it appears in S1 is used. In the body of several S2 episodes, stock footage of the older Seaview appears as well.

The "Kelp creature" was origianlly designed for "Voyage" and appears in S1's "The Condemned" and later on in the "Lost in Space" episode "The Raft" and "The Keeper".

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I just finished watching The Left-Handed Man today. I've been taking it slow through the set to savor it for a while since the next set won't be out until Feb. 20. Good episode, too.

It seems like a long time to wait to complete the series in late 2008, but as long as they keep coming, I'll be anticipating each release.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I zipped through my set rather quickly. Gosh, it made me wish Fox had just put the entire season in one set. These half-seasons end too abruptly, after I really start getting 'into' a series. I know, I know, it's better than nothing. Anyway, the scripts are starting to show a few more gaps in logic, but the episodes themselves are nonetheless a barrell of fun. I think my favorite of the set was "The Machines Strike Back." Zesty stuff; hardly gave me a chance to breathe. A lot of folks seemed to like "Leviathan," but I don't know. The Seaview 'miniature' is a really nifty model and I buy into it, but when you put some dude (mr. giant) in the water tank with it, knocking it about, it got to be a bit much for me. The cornball Halloween teeth didn't help. But, oh well. As a whole, I found the set marvelously entertaining. Made me feel like a kid again.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I just finished my set and overall I thought it was really good. My favourite episodes are "The Cyborg", "The Machines Strike Back", "The Left Handed-Man" and "The Peacemaker". I found "The Monster From Outer Space" to be better than expected, for a dreaded monster episode, the story was pretty good. I agree with Bert about "Leviathan", that episode had me until the end with the guy grabbing the Seaview. My least favourite episode was "The X Factor". I didn't care for the plot and how Crane and the others kept stopping at spots where there was things that could help them during the chase at the end, like the hose and the steam vent. Otherwise, I enjoyed the set.

VOYAGE - SEASON TWO, VOLUME TWO PACKAGING DESIGN!!!!!

Oh, I like the VOYAGE episode "The X Factor" (05/12/1965) which was a wildly offbeat THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.-like domestic espionage suspense thriller especially with the notable casting of John McGiver as the ruthless toy manufacturer cum foreign operative head Alexander Corby and some visually stunning advant garde direction by Leonard Horn...but to each his own!

Point-of-fact I immensely enjoyed all 13 episodes in the excellent season two, volume one set.

Well the packaging design for the impending VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA - SEASON TWO, VOLUME TWO 3-disc set has been finalized and the Flying Sub makes it at long last.

There is still some confusion over the correct number of observation windows in evidence on the Seaview...something that will likely never be satisfactorily resolved.

Looking ahead, hopefully the packaging design for the third season (1966-67) episode sets will mark a (welcome) return of both Richard Basehart and David Hedison giving a more human aspect to the promotional artwork.

It appears as though 4 of the 8 windows were masked out--I wonder what's it store for S3 vol. 1... Also, look at the bay doors for the FS-1. Looks odd, indeed as the outline seems to configure to the shape of the vehicle. The people in charge of this are not "Voyage" fans, that much is certain.

I thoroughly enjoyed all 13 episodes too and am frustrated in having to wait until the end of February to see "The Graveyard of Fear", "Deadly Creature Below!", "Killers of the Deep" and "The Phantom Strikes". Although the second half of the season does not have the cloak and dagger intrigue I enjoyed in episodes like "Escape from Venice", there is plenty to enjoy in vol. 2, even if, lamentably Terry Becker only appears in the first five of the thirteen installments.

One thing that surprised me is how much more I enjoyed episodes like "The X Factor" and "The Peacemaker" to the reviewers on vttbots.com. I had low hopes for the latter entry and found myself really enjoying this one--in fact it was one of the first episodes I viewed twice. This site, by the way has updated the images to go with the summary/commentary for the episodes in S1, vol. 2--and what an improvement when one compares them to the current images being used for the latter half of the yet unreleased set to S2.

FAVOURITE SECOND SEASON EPISODES!!!!!

I fully appreciate your anxiousness for I myself am looking forward to "The Menfish" (06/03/1966) and "The Mechanical Man" (13/06/1966) two of my personal favourites from VOYAGE's second season (1965-66).

The second year of VOYAGE can be thought of as its Teflon season in that it could (seemingly) do no wrong with a continued succession of one resounding success after another.

"The Peacemaker" (21/11/1965) with featured guest-star John Cassavettes is certainly one of the more respectable efforts adeptly presented in a definite I SPY (NBC 1965-67) vein aptly demonstrating that VOYAGE could readily adapt itself to any dramatic milieu and style when necessary.

Pertaining to those two online critics in my own estimation they both often miss the mark entirely in their evaluations and betray very little understanding of the episodes being discussed.

Case-in-point "The Cyborg" (17/10/1965) which has consistently been so favourably lauded by consumers of the recent VOYAGE season two, volume one DVD set.

It really isn't a very pursuasive argument that a segment can be so negatively appraised when the example video screen captures used to illustrate it look so exceptionally good. Seeing is believing!

It brings to mind a popular and well done periodical in the 1960s called CASTLE OF FRANKENSTEIN magazine that had absolute contempt for VOYAGE when it debuted but later had nothing but esteemed acclamation for "The Cyborg" (and the toweringly bravura performance of guest-star Victor Buono as the megalomaniacal electronics-bionics expert Tabor Ulrich) in particular citing it as one of this Irwin Allen 1960s SF tv series' finest achievements to date.

That's certainly good enough of a recommendation for me.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

It really does look like they masked over the lower four windows on the 8-window sub based on that cover design. Not that I'm too worked up over the cover art. I just can't wait for the next volume to arrive so I can safely say I have two full seasons of Voyage on DVD!

My memory may be a bit hazy, but I recall really enjoying "The Menfish" and think that the reviewers here are being much too harsh. Although Basehart is absent, the episode features a great teaser, the very capable John Dehner and Gary Merrill along with a spectacular denizen vs. Seaview battle--possibly the best ever filmed for the series. With the transfers looking so superb, this segment will be a showcase event for me.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

Meanwhile, still no news here in r2-land!

January sees the release of Alien Nation (exactly one year behind r1), but that will also mark a year from the r1 release of Time Tunnel and no sign of that.

No listing in Febuary for Voyage either (also 1 year), just Stargate and Stargate Atlantis.

I have been holding out in the hope that r2 discs would be DVD-9 based, and also maybe they'd master new PAL discs from the original film (though knowing Fox we'd get an NTSC conversion job!)...

The groundhog missed seeing his shadow; Spring is supposedly therefore right around the corner; and if it's February, then it must be time to start thinking about VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA, SEASON TWO, VOLUME TWO, due out in stores on February 20th.

I've just pre-ordered it and will now wait the two+ weeks until it arrives.

Bring em on! I plan to buy the entire series, even the ones with those silly "Monster Episodes"

"The Time Tunnel" had Irwin Allen's Made-for-TV Movie "Time Travelers" in it as well as a Failed Remake. Hopefully Future VTTBOTS Seasons will have Irwin Allen's "City Beneath the Sea" TV Movie in it with a few other "Goodies"

CITY BENEATH THE SEA!!!!!

Unfortunately the made-for-tv film CITY BENEATH THE SEA (1971) was produced by Warner Brothers Television and won't likely be included in any forthcoming VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA tv series DVD packages but the original 17 minute pilot presentation short with Glenn Corbett was made under the auspices of 20th Century-Fox Television and that just may be thrown in as an extra.

Yes indeed, the last half of VOYAGE's second season (1965-66) is a real knockout rivaling the first especially "The Menfish" (06/03/1966) and "The Mechanical Man" (13/03/1966) with featured guest-star James Darren (aka Tony Newman on THE TIME TUNNEL tv series).

Right now this looks like one of the best tv series DVD releases of the year!

Amazon seems to think that S3 vol. 1 is a sure thing as they have it listed for preorder (with no release date set). What a shock I got when I saw the old Whitman book cover serving as the picture. Message to Fox studios: if you are going to use this as the DVD cover, please remember to mask out 4 windows. Thank you.

MUCH MORE TO COME I'M SURE!!!!!

I think that the remaining two seasons of VOYAGE are now a certainty and since 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment is (apparently) continuing with two volume per individual season editions then this must surely be a good indication that sales for this particular Irwin Allen 1960s SF tv series classic have been reasonably respectable to warrent further multi-volume sets.

If all works out well we may just have the entire third season (1966-67) VOYAGE episodes by the year's end!

Naturally it's very gratifying to have VOYAGE (finally) made available on a quality DVD release as this invaluable tv property is currently not being aired in syndication anywhere...as far as I know!

This is precisely what I (personally) want to see: More rare television shows that aren't being shown anymore and are generally inaccessible to those who value them marketed on DVD.

Just wish they get rid of the damn flippers, it's inexcusable to be using them for a 15 episode set, it could easily fit on 4 DVD-9's I have not had one set that did not have at least one episode that had some sort of Problem. I've Ordered S2 Vol2, but If I have a problem with it I'm done with them, as much As I want them.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

Dave, you've had an unfortunate string of bad luck there. I have all three volumes and the only disc that gives me problems is the one with "Turn Back the Clock" where freezing occurs in the diving bell scene. I chose to live with it when I realized that this appeared to be a widespread problem. Hope you have better luck with S2, vol. 2. And I completely agree--the 'flippers' must go.

I honestly expect there to be a complete VTTBOTS series set released down the road with all the glitches rectified, picture discs, bonus disc, etc. I'm seriously considering holding off on purchasing S3-4 for this reason.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I have all season's 1 and 2 now. I received season 2, vol 2 last week. I can say that I have had no problems with these dvds, I had only one problem where one of the episodes skipped forward a few seconds in the episode ‘The Deadliest Game’. I have replayed that spot where it skipped and it played ok the second time so there is no serious fault on that spot. Other than that one time, the dvds have played wonderful.

TWO VOLUME SEASON SETS!!!!!

It was reported earlier in this discussion thread that someone had problems with their VOYAGE - SECOND SEASON, VOLUME ONE set but fortunately my own played just fine without any difficulties encountered.

This is one of the (unappreciated) advantages of breaking an entire season into two volumes in that they are much easier and faster to monitor should there be any manufacturer defects.

So at present I have no reason not to continue acquiring further seasons of VOYAGE myself.

Re: When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!!

I've watched the first four episodes of the S2V2 set and they've all been excellent! Especial kudos goes to the 're-imagining' of Robert Mitchum's 'The Enemy Below' with 'Killers of the Deep', utilising lots of footage from that film; and the moody 'The Phantom Strikes' with a wonderful turn by Alfred Ryder!

Quality-wise, visually, they continue to be as good as the previous sets. There are some odd audio glitches in 'The Phantom Strikes', as if the actors were speaking through a hollow tin. It sounds like a raw audio recording, frankly. But it lasts for just one short scene, though. Of course, I'm no expert, so I'm sure someone else here would be more accurate in their assessment.

Bring on S3!

Cheers!

I just still don't get it why they can't put 13 episodes on 3 DVD-9s instead of 3 flippers. It's a waste. I wish they switch to DVD-9s for future releases. I do have a my copy and I hope to look at it soon (I wish Fox sent it sooner than last week).

I hate the quality of the sets of this show I've been getting, the copy I bought today has a fingerprint on disc two and two long scuff marks on disc three (On the sides facing up on each disc). Other sets have had problems playing the first disc, I have this problem with some of the MASH episodes too but I think it's my DVD player, since those discs play on my computer and my other DVD player. I hate returning DVDs.

The sad truth is that not all dvd players will play all disks. That might be the reason that it plays on your computer and elsewhere.
