When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!! - Page 13

Hey guys I need your help.

I bought the first set on Febuary 24th from Wal-Mart.

I've been busy and finally opened it up today and found out that I have 2 discs of disc 2. No disc 1 at all.

I have the different sleeves for each disc, but disc sleeve 1 and 2 both contain the same disc.

I don't really want to return the entire set as there is nothing wrong with the discs themselves.

Does FOX have an e-mail or a phone # that I can contact them at to see if I can get disc 1.

Would Walmart accept an exchange on opened DVDs in this case of incorrect discs?

I have the receipt.

Thanks in advance.

I had a similar situation, with two disc threes and no disc two. But I ordered mine from an online supplier, who had me mail in the one errant disc for an exchange for the correct disc.

Walmart's usually pretty good about exchanges. I'm sure if you explain your situation and have everything you need right in front of them, they'll let you do what you need to.

Take it in and claim that you bought it as a birthday present for someone, wrapped it up weeks ago and they just opened it to find it's wrong.

Play the sympathy card!

Seriously, most stores will help you out if this happens.

I just did two recent side-by-side comparisons of the dual pilots presented in both this VOYAGE set and the TIME TUNNEL set.

In the VOYAGE set, we're presented with two versions of the pilot - a so-called unaired pilot in color, and the black & white aired version.

My HDTV is capable of displaying two side-by-side images, so I ran one DVD player into one and another DVD player into the other, then I synched up the start and let them run side by side, start to finish.

What astonished me here was that the only differences I could detect, other than color/black & white, were the opening titles section. The color version seemed to to use an early season two opening sequence, which differed from the images on the back & white version. In other words, the pictures of the Seaview, Basehart, and Hedison were in the same places, but were filmed at different times. The timing matched perfectly, since it was all timed to the same theme and narration.

With only a couple of minor timing differences going in and out of commercial break spots, these two films are identical. They ran side-by-side virtually unattended, and finished at the exact same moment. So really, the only differences one could detect is the color.

The color version also seemed to have a softer image - perhaps that's normal, since I've never had a chance to compare a color print to a black & white print of the same film. The black & white image was crystal clear, while the color looked a little blurrier by comparison, something I hadn't noticed when playing these individually.

I know that the color version that aired on SciFi differed from the color version on the DVD, particularly in the title sequence, which used a totally different section of music, no narration, and no images of Hedison or Basehart. We've heard mention in this thread that perhaps a third version of the pilot will show up on a future set.

I had thought, perhaps incorrectly, that variations in the VOYAGE pilot episodes might have had something to do with the Dr, Gamma actors oming and going, but there's nothing to substantiate that here. Both of these DVD versions have the same two actors, Klemperer and Marcuse, in the same places.

Notes about the TIME TUNNEL pilot episodes will be over in that thread.

Interesting read, Harry. Thanks for going through this much trouble for the "Voyage" afficianados out there. I suspected that there was little if any difference between the two pilots other than what appears in the titles. The true unaired, rarely seen pilot features different opening music I believe, not the familiar Sawtell "nautical" theme--but I can't imagine what that might be. Bernard Herrmann's opening theme to "The Day the Earth Stood Still" is used in the original unaired "Lost in Space" pilot--I wonder if a 20th Century Fox library cue was used here as well.

I thought I'd update you guys on the mispackaging with my copy.

I had 2 #2 disc and no disc #1.

So I went to Walmart and told them the situation.

They said go get another one, they opened it up and it was the exact same thing. 2 #2 discs and no #1. She called the manager and she got the OK to go get another copy.

And again it was the same problem. So I went to get a third copy and the same thing again.

So I went again and got another copy and finally it had the correct discs.

So the one I originally returned and the 3 they opened up, Walmart had 4 incorrect disc packaging.

So I don't know if this is rare, but I wonder how many they had left on the shelf is also error packaging.

Quality control just isn't what it used to be.

Has anyone noticed that the actual duplicator/author/manufacturer for the VOYAGE set is not the same as for the TIME TUNNEL set?

I noticed that recently. The TIME TUNNEL set, when you're playing the last episode on a disc will pop up a "Panasonic" manufacturing splash screen, while the VOYAGE set comes up with something totally different (and I'm drawing a blank here as to what it actually says - it's not Panasonic though).

I would have thought that the two would have been the same, but I suppose Fox had to farm them out to whomever could handle the order.

actually the opening credits have 2 other discrepancies-after showing the titles and the two main stars, there is a shot of the SEAVIEW plowing through the water...the color has it heading to the left, the BW to the right,
Couldnit tell if this was a simple reverse-shot, or two similar but different clips.
And of course the color version has the Flying sub bay doors, absent in the BW, under the name of "produced and created by Irwin Allen"

Interesting that both versions episode info font for "Eleven Days to Zero", guest stars, writer, director etc is in that psychedelic, watery style.
from then on it became Lucida Grande or something more normal.

Both carry a 1963 copyright

Ok, it's time to get a release date for the second half of Season 1. Gord? Dave? Anyone?

Gary "I'm hoping for nothing later than a July release" O.
I was about to post a similar message myself, in light of the announcements for a July release for "Rawhide" and "Man from U.N.C.L.E." which did not even register as a radar blip more than a few weeks ago. VTTBOTS has already had a vol. 1 release. Why do consumers have to wait approximatey 5 months or more anyway? Seems to me Fox would want to 'strike while the iron is hot'.

I'd think so as well. I've not seen patterns to TV/DVD releases. Strange business....unpredictable, to me, anyway. Oh well....as long as the "classics" keep coming, I'll be 'ing.

Yea, you'd think that they'd move a tad faster inbetween releases. To be fair though, they released the first set of this series along side "TIME TUNNEL" so that probably factors into the equation. I do think, between the two series, a quarterly release for each wouldn't be asking too much, but what do I know...

Gary "just give us a release date so we can pre-order it Fox. Please." O.
After finishing watching through the volume one set, I'm eagerly awaiting word of v2 myself. I'm getting impatient already.
Fox releases the first volume around five weeks after Time Tunnel. If they stick to that then that would put it into July. I saw a Fox release announced for the last week in June. Hopefully in the next 2-3 weeks the word will be coming.
I have been slowly watching episodes off the first volume. It isn't as great as Time Tunnel, but it is entertaining despite sometimes absurd plots and twists. I just wonder if I will start making fun of it in a MST3000 style when season 2 comes along to DVD. I do hope vol 2 of s1 is released for all VTTBOTS fans.

You beat me to the punch by a few seconds, David. July 11th will be a great day! Thanks to Gord and David for the good news.

To each his own, I always say, but I find this a tad strange. Not that I think TT was campy or goofy, but neither was VTTBOTS during its first season. I'm just not sure why you'd think there were "absurd plots and twists" in VOYAGE, but not TT. And I surely don't know why anyone would think about making fun of the second half of season one in a "MST3000 style", as you put it. Maybe during the third or fourth season, but not the first.

Gary "that first season of VTTBOTS was easily the most 'serious' season of any Irwin Allen series" O.
Interesting. So at this point we're now a little under two months to TIME TUNNEL v2 and about 3 months from VTTBOTS v2.

I notice in Gord Lacey's description there is mention of mono audio and yet no mention of the "stereo" audio that was included in v1 of VTTBOTS. It's fine with me if they did away with it - I prefer the original, and more natural, mono audio to any fake stereo. In fact, I can generate my own fake stereo (if I wanted to) with my system receiver's different sound-field settings.

It'll be fun to see the conclusion of season one of this series, though I'm more anxious to get the balance of the TIME TUNNEL's in my collection. I find myself RE-watching TIME TUNNEL episodes, while still not finishing up the VOYAGE episodes. I wish I knew what it is that keeps me from fully embracing VTTBOTS. I'm sure it's not the color/b&w thing, and the stories in season 1 have been excellent for the most part.

Maybe I'll go look at the last episode I have, HAIL TO THE CHIEF.

I'm on the Same ep Harry, enerally its the other way around for me I finished Viyage fater than TT thou I'm on the last TT Disk and watched the Alamo the other day. Maybe I'm just more into that B&W Noirish quality of the 1st season of Voyage, although TT is as good as I remember it. Still how come they can bring everybody back in time but not Doug or Tony just does'nt make sense.
Well, I figure that bringing back Tony and Doug pretty much would've ended the series right then and there. After their ordeal, they would've had to have been idiots to go through it again for further stories.

Same as bringing home the Jupiter 2 or the Spindrift - the series would just be over. In order to further these series, the two ships had to remain lost, and our two time travellers had to remain lost in time.

VOYAGE had a built-in longevity (with credibility) with its tales of roaming the seven seas - able to reach many ports and yet still tackle the unknowns in the depths of the oceans.

For whatever reason though, VTTBOTS just doesn't "push my buttons" the way TIME TUNNEL did.

I don't really remember the first season that well. Do the second half of episodes stay more grounded in reality like the first half? When did the series get more fantastic? Did it start getting sillier with season 2 or is that still in the serious vein?

I only remember the fantastic monsters and people continually popping in and out like Jeannie. I guess I'm just trying to find out what the experts here feel are the best seasons.
I'm pretty certain that season one continues, grounded in the more noirish stories of espionage and intrigue. And season 2, for its greater portion of episodes continues that tradition, with more of a veer towards the fantastic, now looking more glorious in color.

As the monsters appeared, the ratings went up, and, from what I've learned, the network ordered more and more monsters. So by season 3, the show was pretty well a monster-of-the-week show.

While that trend continued into season 4, there were a few attempts to bring a bit of reality back into the series, but by then it had pretty much damaged its reputation and become a kiddie-science-fiction show.

Certainly there are fans of those two latter seasons, and I don't mean to disparage anyone here - to each his own - but the first two years are the best for VOYAGE.

Harry
Harry's correct. Season 1 is all but exclusively done in the cold war/spy/intrigue genre. Season 2 continues down that same path, with just a few pitstops at the "fantasy" cafe.

Once Season 3 rolled around things got campy/silly, although some solid episodes, that aren't quite so monster of the weekish, were done during the last 2 years.

Gary "Seasons 1 & 2 should be 'must buys' for anyone that likes what they've seen thus far with the first release" O.

The second half has several top notch episodes ("Mutiny", "Doomsday", "The Enemies" "The Condemned") that are on a par with first half season entries like "The Mist of Silence", "The Fear Makers" and "Submarine Sunk Here". Unlike the latter half of TT, Voyage showed barely perceptible slipping off of quality.

I'm hoping that this will herald an announcement for the complete Time Tunnel and complete first season of Voyage here in the UK.

The Fox site here lists releases up to June, and thankfuly this sees the final volumes of the Angel and Buffy re-re-re-re-releases of the releases we had last year. Mind you wouldn't surprise me if they went for another go at The X-Files.

As I've said earlier, Uk releases from Fox tend to be full seasons. All of Lost In Space was for example.

So I'm hoping that we get something new, rather than "Buffy: The Complete End Credits in Six Volumes" or something like that.

being a 'serious' actor Ive always wondered what Richard Basehart thought when Leprechauns, Ghost Pirates, Werewolves and talking evil Marrionettes started appearing on the show in season 3 & 4...

In a recent David Hedison interview, he mentioned that Basehart appears slightly more irritable on camera in the remaining seasons. I don't remember enough about S3-4 to get a mental picture, but he does appear upbeat and enthustiastic in S1 at least. Having Hedison and Terry Becker on the set helped him to see through it all as he got on so well with these two. It is known that Basehart never cared much for Irwin Allen, which I'm beginning to understand more readily.
Maybe he was thinking about where he could cash his check
post #390 of 1497
I can remember an interview with Hedison way back in like 1965 where he was asked what he thought about the show, and his answer was something like:
"At first I was kind of embarrassed, but then I took a good look at the other dreck on TV and decided there was nothing to be ashamed of..."
