When are We going to see a Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea DVD Release?!!!!! - Page 7

I think that the conning tower is a little too near the bow nose section of the Seaview as well but afterall it's supposed to be a symbollic abstract representation of the show.

But seriously people were dissastified with the eight windowed depiction of this fantastic futuristic submarine seen in the initial previewed box design so it just goes to show that everybody can't be pleased.

At least now we have something more tangible to go on and it does recognizably capture the true essence and stature of this classic 1960s SF tv series...and I want to place emphasis on the word stature!

To my thinking (overall) VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA (ABC 1964-68) was a much more outstanding achievement than LOST IN SPACE (CBS 1965-68) ever was and while Peter Staddon himself never specifically related his own feelings about the earlier Fox Home Entertainment release I'm sure that in the case of VOYAGE he is most definitely proud of the (grand) achievement in finally making this time honoured and immensely popular adventure series available on DVD at long last.

This discussion thread is almost 2 years in the making and it signifies a triumphant culmination of stoic dedication and (at times) hard fought perserverance in making this fervent dream a reality.

I feel that all the VOYAGE fans who (generously) contributed to this (noble) effort in (positively) expressing their earnest desire in having it made commercially available in what will prove to be I'm sure a high quality complete series home entertainment collection rightly earned their just reward.

And it is to all these hardy and conscientious souls that I (proudly) dedicate this VOYAGE discussion thread to. This (auspicious) moment belongs to you!

Bring on VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA in February 2006!

The more I look at this new cover design, the better I like it, and the thought of pristine black & white prints on DVD from the first season is really appealing to me. Here's hoping that Fox is doing what we hear that they're supposed to be doing - making these VOYAGE episodes look and sound the best they ever have.

Yesterday (1/24), Jeff Bond of Film Score Monthly magazine (now available online only) had this to say about the upcoming release for VTTBOTS:

"I've seen the check discs for these and the image quality for both B&W and color (the unaired pilot and Irwin Allen's ABC promotional presentation) is excellent. Extras include about 20 minutes of behind the scenes footage on the pilot (without audio), promotional artwork and PR photos and photos of merchandise from the series. Can't wait for the color episodes--not as serious as season one but more fun to watch to me."

This is very encouraging news--it looks as though the transfer quality of the episodes are every bit as good as those for TT! This is the first time I'm reading that the un-aired pilot that is included in this set is in fact the color one. (I believe this is on disc 4, side B, while the aired B&W pilot is on disc1, side A).
I thought there were supposed to be TWO extra versions of the pilot, one b&w, and one color - in ADDITION to the aired b&w version. I could be wrong, but that's what I thought I read earlier in this thread.

Finally Amazon.com has previewed the packaging design for the impending VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA - FIRST SEASON, VOLUME ONE 4-disc box set due out on February 21st, 2006 and now we can get started in making this an outstanding triumph!

Advance word from those who've actually seen this stellar DVD collection have reported that the same fine work done with THE TIME TUNNEL, VOLUME ONE 4-disc box set has been maintained here so that VOYAGE fans should be very pleased with the final results.

The three versions of the VOYAGE pilot episode "Eleven Days to Zero" (14/09/1964) will be released but not all together in volume one which would tend to make it ponderously top heavy with the selfsame episode (despite the differences in evidence). Since Michael has stated that both the unaired colour pilot (screened for the ABC Television Network programming executives) and the primetime broadcast black-and-white version will be packaged in volume one set then (apparently) the alternate, never before seen unaired black-and-white version should be included in volume two no doubt due out sometime later in the year.

Anyway just few more weeks and a (yet another) long sought after dream will (finally) become reality for this classic 1960s SF tv series' anxious and devout fan following.

I have contributed to many other message posts for (classic) tv series DVD releases made here that I believe in but this one is my personal baby I'm proud to say!

I only remember this series as a kid from reruns. Someone told me that Kowalski and some of the other regulars were starting to get bumped off in the later episodes. I'm hoping not, as that would be like knocking off Scotty in Star Trek. Anyone remember whether they began killing off the cast?

Thanks

Jeff
Not that "Kowalski rumour" again! The one and only (semi) regular crewman that gets bumped off is Paul Carr's role as seaman Clark. Like Star Trek, Voyage had its own "red shirt" syndrome where expendable crewmen were concerned. But as for Admiral Nelson, Capt. Crane, Commander Morton, Chief Sharkey, Kowalski, Patterson, Sparks and the good Doctor (Richard Bull), they all survived everything the universe managed to throw at them.

This has topped my Wish List of DVDs for years. It's my Holy Grail, if you will. The packaging isn't perfect, but it could be a lot worse. It doesn't look bad at all. I absolutely can't wait to see this on DVD.

Well VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA (ABC 1964-68) has the same stature as STAR TREK (NBC 1966-69) in popularity among the SF community out there.

Point-of-fact VOYAGE always scored higher in tv audience ratings and lasted four (highly) successful seasons much longer than its chief (contemporary) rival did at the time.

I've never heard that Kowalski (Del Monroe) rumour before but there were some major cast changes during this classic 1960s SF tv series' run on the ABC Television Network nonetheless.

CPO Curley Jones was replaced after the first season (1964-65) due to the death of Henry Kulky (August 11th, 1911 - February 12th, 1965).

Crewman Malone (Mark Slade) was dispensed with after only a handful of episodes produced in the early part of the first season ultimately being replaced by Crewman Patterson (Paul Trinka) who stayed for the remainder of the show's run.

Crewman Casey Clark (Paul Carr) made infrequent appearances in several segments actually advancing in rank during the course of the first season. In the second season Paul Carr appeared as Crewman Benson ("Terror on Dinosaur Island") and again as Crewman Clark in a third season (1966-67) segment ("No Escape from Death") via stock film footage (as Michael has already mentioned).

Crewman Stu Riley was eliminated with the departure of Allan Hunt after his single season tenure in VOYAGE's second year (1965-66) who left the show to enlist in the U.S. military.

Terry Becker was almost written out of the series in the second season after a contractural salary dispute arose with Irwin Allen (June 12th, 1916 - November 02nd, 1991) in the episode "The Sky's on Fire" (23/01/1966) in which CPO Francis Ethelbert Sharkey was supposed to be killed but ultimately retained when an (amicable) agreement was reached.

See how many changes in the cast everybody has to look forward to?!

Holy Cow!!!! TVShowsonDVD has just announced that FOX plans on releasing Volume 2 of Season 1 in either May or June! The common disclaimers apply, but this is fantasic news none the less.

Makes sense; these are only half-season sets. With one every three months or so, you get two seasons a year; about the same rate that Fox released the X-Files sets. Methinks having half-sets is a strategy to make people feel they're getting the stuff quicker, even when they aren't (and feel like they aren't paying out so much either). Those six months were a long time between releases, and didn't present such a steady revenue stream. It also means that Fox get "New Release" shelfspace twice as often. And spoken about twice as often.

Interesting that we still haven't heard a thing about these in r2...just more Angel and Buffy rubbish...time to import them from the USA methinks.

In r2 we got full sets of Lost In Space, we never did get half-seasons. Our editions looked just as awful though!

I wonder when they will announce the other half of Time Tunnel. Maybe, as there's only the second half to go, they will put the full six months betwene those two...

Did these R2 releases also have the PAL speed-up factor? Just curious - I already have all of the R1 sets.

Good to hear about the Volume 2 tentative date. If one paces their viewing of the VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA Season One Volume One set to around one episode a week, it could stretch out to the release of Volume 2.

Thanks, Dave "You & Gord are the best".

What I REALLY want to know, is....did you do a "dance around the room" when Gord posted that info about the A-Team S3 Universal logo being removed from beginning of the eps?

Great news on Voyage. Now I'm going to get greedy and expect Time Tunnel Vol. 2 at the same time and then Voyage Season 2 and Land of the Giants Season 1 later in the year
post #197 of 1497
Michael_KS and JeffT, I appreciate the information. The person I spoke with swore up and down that all the regulars except the Captain and Admiral were killed off in the final season, specifically the Commander and Kowalski.

The (apparent) fact that volume two of the VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA (ABC 1964-68) first season DVD collection is being immediately prepared for either a May or June release date is a good indicator that it will also be marketed abroad as a complete first season (1964-65) set (in Region 2) at around the same time.

No doubt 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment has deemed VOYAGE as the most likely IRWIN ALLEN 1960s SF tv series to start off with first in the foreign markets which is really good, sound judgement.

With this advancement in the scheduling LAND OF THE GIANTS (ABC 1968-70) just may be released sometime later in 2006 afterall albeit I would still expect/want THE TIME TUNNEL, VOLUME TWO 4-disc box set to come out sometime this year as well...hopefully before the time that the GIANTS collection does as I not really much of series fan myself.

Fox should finish what has been started before turning its attention to other such projects.

Because VOYAGE's second season (1965-66) and THE TIME TUNNEL (ABC 1966-67) were both produced in colour I don't want to see a rush job done on either as colour film restoration is a lengthy and (highly) meticulously involved process.

In this (particular) instance just rewards will come to those with (reasoned) patience.

I don't resent the two series; what I resent is Fox in r2 relentlessly churning and rechurning the DVD releases of those two series to the detriment of other shows.

Instead of us getting new stuff, like Time Tunnel and Voyage, we just got yet another repackaging of Angel and Buffy instead.

And it's not as though Fox are in a rush to release stuff either; the "new editions" of these two have occupied their pre-release listings right up until the first week of April! So we have to wait until probably May or June at the earliest for either of the ones I want.

Makes me wonder if r2 will get complete seasons, after the two half-seasons are out in r1...?

We got completes for Lost In Space, not half-seasons.
I cant decide-buy the 2 seperates or wait for a (supposed) full- season UK boxset...

Given volume pricing structures, and a 17% VAT discount, the cost could be quite competitive with the total of the 2 R1 boxes...
Great news about season 2! Somebody posted the news on another board and I was pretty darn happy about that.

I picked up the Time Tunnel set yesterday and the transfers on that are fantastic. I'm really looking forward to seeing the same from the Voyage set.

Just 18 days left until Captain Crane takes command of the Seaview.

Just think - one week from now, next Friday, it will be 11 days to zero (the name of the VOYAGE pilot!).

I'm so excited by the VTTBOTS release that I've bookmarked and check these two sites every day for posting of video clips:

On one of these sites, don't remember which, I reported on the release of the TT clips from the pilot episode.

I think that other forum members here are going to get fed up with all the attention being lavished on the two Irwin Allen 1960s SF tv series DVD releases but it's gratifying to witness such sincere delight and joyous enthusiasm being expressed for a favourite program like VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA (ABC 1964-68).

2006 has certainly proven to be an especially excellent one for classic 1960s SF tv series fans in particular with both THE TIME TUNNEL (ABC 1966-67) and the soon-to-released VOYAGE collections having been scheduled this year.

Thanks to DVD releases of classic (pre-1970s) tv series television viewing (in recent years) has never been so good...and won't ever be for we'll never see their (colourfully imaginative and excitingly entertaining) likes again I regret to say!
