Hi guys, I haven't dropped off the face of the Earth, nor have I been time-displaced by Mr. Pem. No, something far more sinister is involved here - MOVING!
But I've kept up with the thread, checking in when I can. At this moment, I'm in the new place, logging in via dial-up. I can say that I've been a fan of THE FANTASY WORLDS OF IRWIN ALLEN since its inception back in the '90s. As I recall, I saw it on the Sci-Fi Channel when it premiered, because I remember writing down the address where I could get a VHS copy.
I did that and enjoyed it, later upgrading to the DVD when IT came out. The DVD has a bunch of extras that the VHS lacks, like the presentation shorts for CITY BENEATH THE SEA and MAN FROM THE 25th CENTURY, plus it's much easier to navigate if you're only interested in looking at the section on VOYAGE or TIME TUNNEL.
And I've been a fan of the Jon Abbott book on the IRWIN ALLEN PRODUCTIONS since IT came out a few years ago. It was initially expensive, but it's a nice hard-bound book that I've enjoyed thoroughly. The book serves as a pretty decent companion to all of the series.
It's clear from reading it that Mr. Abbott is a TIME TUNNEL most of all, finding positive things to say about even the wonkiest of episodes. His patience for VOYAGE seems to have worn thin after about the second season, as his reviews tend toward the negative as the series delved into its monster-of-the-week format, but I find a good bit of his criticism warranted.
His views on LOST IN SPACE tend to mirror mine, where it's a series that you have to be in the mood for, or the silliness will get to you.
And I believe he found LAND OF THE GIANTS largely uninspired once you get a few episodes in. His book was the one, however, that led me to watch LAND OF THE GIANTS in production order, rather than the aired order of the DVD's. That helps immensely as the characters tend to evolve more naturally in production order.
I also have the William Anchors book on TIME TUNNEL and VOYAGE, and its too makes a pretty good compaion, though it's a little less "professional" with its inconsistent fonts and spacing. It's very detailed in the story-lines, though, more-so than Mr. Abbott's book.
