Seaview 7 I enjoyed your comments about Voyage. I believe it aired on Channel 50 around 6:00Pm around 1987 then again on 50 in the early 90s airing on late night along with the those lovely Women asking you to call and the Woman who read your palm or something. We all at work laughed at that junk. I did watch Voyage but not as much as like it now .

Really? I kinda think we'll see it before the year is up. I have no inside knowledge, mind you, but I honestly don't think we will have to wait too long for the last volume.

Having said that, Fox is the studio that put out BIG VALLEY Season 2, Volume 1 and never even followed up with a second volume. So there is some evidence for what you say. But I'm not ready to panic just yet.

Season Four Volume One has only been on sale for 43 days!

Why in the world would anyone be concerned about this now?

I’m hardly the biggest fan of how FOX has handled VOYAGE – particularly Season Four – but I’d rather see this thread go dormant for a while than see it become devoted to such totally unwarranted fretting!

With DVD sales generally down and, if you believe the posters on this forum, classic TV releases scaled back in particular, you’d actually have to commend FOX in its continued support of this particular series.

Besides, I’d be far more concerned if Season Four had never begun. Since it has, I’m fairly confident that it will complete. 6-8 months from now with no announcement or release, maybe I’ll feel differently…

Agreed. There's always been a lot of interest in the Irwin Allen properties, and with one remaining half-season to go, does anyone actually think that Fox Home Video is going to somehow pull the plug?

It'll be out when it's out. Meantime there's nearly 100 other episodes of just that one series to enjoy again and again, plus the other series. A better question at this point is if and when they might re-do LOST IN SPACE.

It's more that we hear about these releases four months in advance - that has been consistent across all the volumes, the sole exception being that we didn't hear about S3V2 - October - until the August prior to that.

As we have yet to hear about S4V2, this would normally mean, it won't be here until at least September, meaning a six-month gap between V1 and V2.

Unless, of course, Fox break the pattern of announcements.

It would not surprise me to see an end of September release (six months). Failing that, November (given that this year's was March rather than the "usual" February).

All in all, this has got to be one of the slowest and most aggravating ways to do the DVD's. Ever!

The killer is the 17 month gap between S3 and S4.

Hell, they actually made and broadcast the whole thing faster than they released it to DVD!

I know that it will be released. I just want anyone who reads this thread that we are er maybe not so patiently waiting.

Mark, I have some questions, comments and Voyage trivia - not sure how "rockin" these will be. But here goes:

The Q: Towards the end of "Man of Many Faces," there is stock footage of a giant explosion on the sea surface (I think from year 2's Terror on Dinosaur Island). But am I imagining things or did the special effects people add a new effect here within the footage? I refer to a strange, white orb seen in the background as Dr. Mason's magnet gets blown to bits. I don't recall seeing that "moon" in previous "stock" uses of this shot.

A Memory: A convention in Los Angeles in the late 1970s and they showed a 20-minute outtake reel of technicians launching the flying sub model from various angles, many shots never used in the actual series. Also, as the flying sub would complete a pass in the sky, it would fly into what looked like a giant pillow case/bag and the technicians would then appear and remove the sub from the wires. I have never seen this footage again, it would make for a great DVD extra.

Trivia: In a book by Tim Colliver (circa 1992), in which he covers Voyage's history, there's a section in the back of the book with all of the Nielsen ratings of every Voyage episode. You can see what episodes really got the high numbers and which didn't. No Way Out (year one) was the highest rated Voyage ever, 25.3 rating. Fatal Cargo was Voyage's highest-rated year 4 show, 19.1.

I believe Colliver says a TV series back then needed a minimum rating of 16 for a passable grade. Colliver did OK with the book but he insists that Warren Stevens played one of the androids in Time Lock. However, I trust Jeff T's earlier info on this one - that Gil Perkins and Roy Sickner were the androids.

Seaview interesting stuff, what is this book you looked in called? I have a book with Time Tunnel and Voyage plus a book on Time Tunnel alone. The one I picked up at a convention of sorts the other at my local comic book store. Put a plug in for City Beneath The Sea at Turner Clasics Web site it is a great movie from Irwin Allen. Mark, the book was called Seaview: The Making of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea by Tim Colliver, published by Star Tech in 1992. A kind of high budget, softcover fanzine:

The Good:

* Mini-interviews with Terry Becker, Pat Culliton, Del Monroe, others (Becker has a great story of a day in 1967 when he and Basehart went out fishing, it ended in disaster)

* Lots of pics, good overview-of toy merchandise, etc.

* The aforementioned posting of Nielsen ratings for all Voyage episodes (it also includes Voyage's competitors' ratings (Disney, Favorite Martian, UNCLE, Gentle Ben). According to this book, year 4 of Voyage did fairly well, ratings-wise, but starting with Deadly Amphibians (Dec 17), which had a measly 13. 7 rating, Voyage then dived and never recovered, lingering in the ratings sub-cellar until cancellation.

But unfortunately, many typos are in the book, and over-long story descriptions for all the episodes. Guest credits are often wrong or sparse. The most complete and accurate Voyage actor credits out there seem to be on Mike Bailey's excellent Voyage web site.

A little off topic, but since you brought it up, What's wrong with the DVD releases of Lost In Space? I've done some searches and gleaned nothing other than the usual pickyness on certain episodes? Were they time compressed or some such?

Have you seen them?

The episodes were mastered to DVD by using old syndication masters done for USA Network back in the early '90s. They were fine for cable television in the CRT age, but, oh, my, they look horrible on today's display devices.

Most episodes were at least complete, though a couple had some minor edits - that wasn't the biggest sin. Just the general fuzziness of the transfers is and was a big disappointment.

Each succeeding season seemed to be worse that the previous, with the third season looking "miserable" - and that's being generous! The black & white season was, I suppose, passable, though it has its problems with horizontal line effects marring the image at times. That was magnified in the second season, and with the shift to color, looked even worse. There was also a general softness/fuzziness to the image.

LOST IN SPACE most definitely needs a re-do someday.

I will grant you that the LIS masters used for DVD are not the best by today's standards but there are a lot of us who hadn't seen the show in decades when they were still using beat-up 16mm prints for syndication, for whom the episodes as used then were an improvement. When it comes to DVD releases by a major studio, NOTHING will ever top the beat-up 16mm prints used for "Emergency!" by Universal with most of the recent releases.

Oh my, They are not up to today's standards for sure. Kinda like the Xena box sets which I cringe looking at on my 60" display.

I do have the Lost in Space sets and have only viewed the B&W first season which I thought was fine enough, but that was on the smaller 43" set.
Perhaps a clean up for Bluray some day?

Maybe we will hear something this week. There was a ton of release news today for other shows at tvshowsondvd.com including Bonanza and the Untouchables season 3. True they are Paramount property's but not a bad way to start the month.

Seaview thanyou for the FYI. Did you know that much of the soundtrack from the movie " The Enemy Below" was used a great deal on the show. They also used a lot of music from the soundtrack "The Day The Earth Stood Still". The Mummy episode they used music from " Rains of Ranchipur" The common ending music of each episode we all know was the great "Whale Episode" Soundtrack from Season Two the first show. That episodes music is used a lot through out the series. I have a cd of Voyage soundtrack I do not know how many are still out there. I would say a must for any Voyage fan. Amazon I am sure would have it. I too carry the hope that soon we shall hear about season 4 part 2.

Great detective work on the music, Mark!

On the DVD “The Day the Earth Stood Still – 2 Disc Special Edition” released last year by FOX, there are two commentary tracks for this great classic Sci-Fi film.

The second one, by a quartet of film and music historians, discuses the film’s score and its composer Bernard Harmann.

At about 1 hour 1 minute – and about 1 hour 11 minutes into the commentary, they reference this music being reused for Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Lost in Space!

Music director Lionel Newman and Time Tunnel composer Lyn Murray are mentioned in the discussion – and one of the speakers states that this music has become “embedded” in many peoples minds not because of “The Day the Earth Stood Still” but because of its repeated use on Voyage and LIS. (That certainly held true for me!)

The film also features Voyage guest star Hugh Marlowe (Bainbridge Wells of Season 3’s “Thing from Inner Space”) and stars the great Michael Rennie (Lost in Space, Time Tunnel, The Invaders)… just in case you needed an additional reason to check out this set!

In addition to LOST IN SPACE and VOYAGE, the music from THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL was also used, unaltered, by Mr. Allen in THE TIME TUNNEL's episode, "Visitors From Beyond The Stars".

Harry, let's see if you can expand on this--I'm guessing your interest in film and television music will turn up an interesting tidbit or two that I've neglected to showcase where Bernard Herrmann's 20th Century Fox film scores are concerned:


Lost in Space:

"Beneath the 12-Mile Reef" (The cue "The Marker" is used for John Robinson jet-pack scenes)

The Day the Earth Stood Still" (used in "The Keeper", "War of the Robots", etc.)

"Garden of Evil" (used in "Follow the Leader" amongst others. I remember it here best for the scene with the phantom warrior behind the mask and a sealed off Professor Robinson. ["Sleep, John Robinson, sleep. And when you wake up..."])


Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea:

"The Day the Earth Stood Still" ("The Mechanical Man" and others)

"Beneath the 12-Mile Reef" (Short cue from the film [not "The Marker"] used in "Deadly Invasion" when Nelson and Crane are examining the miniature spaceship with a magnifying glass)


The Time Tunnel:

"The Day the Earth Stood Still" (aforementioned "Visitors From Beyond the Stars". Only appearance of the opening title music from the film? [Other than for main titles to LIS pilot "Nowhere to Hide"?])

"Garden of Evil" (Used in "Merlin the Magician" when Merlin appears in TT complex. Same basic cue used in LIS, only expanded. Probably used in other episodes as well)

"Journey to the Center of the Earth" (2 or more cues used in various latter episodes)

How could I have forgot "Garden of Evil" one of my favorite movies just released by Fox last year. The Bernard Herrmann score was used frequently in Time Tunnel and maybe Voyage. The "King of the Khyber Rifles" movie music used in The Time Tunnel episode "Night of the Long Knives". "Chase Through Time" used the movie scores from "Beneath the 12 mile reef", "Prince of Fox's", "Prince Valliant", and "Garden of Evil" no less. Film scores from the Fox vault gave these shows a rich feel not to mention the movie footage used on both shows. Pear Harbor episode on Tunnel used music from the movie "Soldier of Fortune". I watched The movie "The Revolt of Maime Stover" the footage of the Pearl Harbor attack came from that movie! Watch the move sometime and you will see. The movie "The Young Lions" Tunnel used one particular track over and over and maybe Voyage. I have always wanted to pin down one track from Tunnel and Voyage. The great action music is used on Tunnel and Voyage. The track is used in the Pirate episode on Tunnel and a Voyage pirate episode in season 3. The track is used on Tunnel in large action scenes constantly. I wish I could track it down. "Journey With Fear" on Voyage used alot of "Journey to the Center of the Earth" for backgroung music. I have noticed on both shows they used the Composers Herrmann, Waxman, and Friedhofer a great deal.

Nice detail there, Mark. You certainly have a good memory and an ear for music cue origin. So then some of Alfred Newman's music was used in TT as well ("Prince of Foxes")--I didn't know that.


For Voyage are you referring to "Dead Men's Doubloons"? If you can narrow down the scene it appears in, I'd like to check out this cue myself.

Yes Mike; Newman's cue is used when Robert Duvall is running around the complex with his gun before he jumps into the Tunnel. The cue can be heard #13 on "Prince of Fox's" cd. The movie scene is the assisan. The end of Merlin Tony and Doug are taken and and you hear a funny exit cue after. I had that pinned down to a movie but cannot remember. I have it on a cd somewhere. I have always thought they wanted "Chase through Time" to be special and it was 4 composers at their best.

You hit it "Dead Men's Doubloons" opeining scene on the Pirate ship the cue plays. Tunnel "Pirate's of Deadmans Island" the cue is used during battle scenes on the ships. I believe it is cue from some movie it is just frustrating because Tunnel used it a lot. I believe I heard just some strings of "Beneath The 12 mile reef" on Voyage season 4. I would have to think which episode. I also was gald to hear I was right. Wild Wild West composer did compose that episode on Voyage. He didn't compose much of WWW though. The Peyton Place thread we were talking the great music on that show.

Voyage fans if you liked Peyton Place when you were a kid buy it! The show looks great and will hook you all over again. Next chapter release is in July. Best Buy has it right now! They also have a bunch of Voyage dvds. Why they would not carry Voyage 4 astounds me.

The Voyage DVDs quailty and Time Tunnel are head and shoulders above most of the TV series dvds I own. Put Voyage in a blu- ray machine it will knock your socks off!!!

I thought I knew quite a bit on that subject, but you’ve not only dwarfed me, but provided SO MUCH (new to me) information that I saved it to disc for future reference.

Oh, and forgive me for misspelling Bernard Hermann’s name (in my last post about “The Day the Earth Stood Still” score in Allen series). Maybe I should finish my morning coffee before posting!

This VOYAGE thread is what caused me to discover HTF, and it’s proved to be perhaps the greatest thread on the forum – in terms of information shared and general civility – not to mention outright longevity!

And let's not forget JeffT., whose expertise on this stuff is just amazing. In fact, just this morning on our TIME TUNNEL FAN FORUM, he's given word that Del Monroe, "Kowalski" on VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA, has apparently just passed away, which is sad news indeed.

We're awaiting official word on that.

I am sorry to hear of Del Monroe. I saw him in a Mission Impossible last season episode. The show aired on my local station not a Dvd. The Time Tunnel episode "Kidnappers" which he starred used a good deal of Bernard Herrmann movie soundtracks as we all know. "The Ghost of Nero" from TT and "The Mummy" on Voyage both used "The Day The Earth Stood Still" The "Robot" on Voyage though was the best I thought.The footage on Nero was from the movie "A Farrwell To Arms".

The movie soundtrack from "Seven Cities of Gold" Hugo Friedhoffer" composer was used in the episode "Idol of Death" on Tunnel. The movie footage came from the Movie "The Captain of Castile". "Robin Hood' and "Merlin" used "Franz Waxman" soundtracks and footage from the movies "Prince Valiant" and "The Virgin Queen". "Between Heaven and Hell" soundtrack from FSM Hugo Friedhoffer cd is a great treat for Tunnel fans.

"The Enemy Below" composer "Heigh Harline" is a great buy for Voyage fans because it is used so much in the show and possilbe movie clips from the movie were used in a Season 3 and or Season 2 episode. The episode was non monster and concerned the seaviews survival. Two episodes were done in Season 2 the other season 3. The same actor was used to go into a tunnel area I think to save the sub. He was a crew member from season 2. The footage of this scene was used again in Season 3. The cd can be found at Amazon I am sure. I would say must buy for Voyage fans.

The Comet episode on Tunnel both footage and and a cue for the Comet ly came from "Lost in Space". The 40th year Lost in Space Cd also I think I caught Voyage only cues not Tunnel. The Voyage soundtrack I am sure can be found at Amazon or other on line dealers.
