NEW YORK - There's a new security threat at some of the nation's military bases — and it looks uncannily like a can of Coke. Specially rigged Coke cans, part of a summer promotion, contain cell phones and global positioning chips. That has officials at some installations worried the cans could be used to eavesdrop, and they are instituting protective measures.

Coke Promotion Prompts Security Measures

This is a real issue. I know of similar restrictions at some companies.

So beware those soda cans -- one never knows where evil may lurk!

i say these miniature chips will soon be very commonplace. i just read an article where this guy is implanting them in golf-balls. that way, if you lose your balls, you can track and find them.

and i definitely forsee the days of minority report. pretty soon, i'll walk into the gap and some computerized voice will say "hi ted! - glad you're wearing the underwear you bought last week!"

heck, they already have technology where buildings can scan your cell phone and, if you're in the area, call you and ask you to come in (or something to that affect).

guess what i'm saying is the army better get used to this stuff.

Yup - you thought spam was bad... pretty soon you'll be getting calls stating "We know you're in the area, how about a 2 for 1 Dominos pizza ?"

What about the possible good that could result of all this?

"Cellphone, locate nearest asian escort service"

"Turn left, proceed five blocks"

"Thank you cellphone!"

Weren't there similar concerns at the Pentagon and CIA over people who brought Furby's to work?

I work at H.P and getting in is not hard, just a swipe of our badge and through the turnstile...now getting out, well, thats about like getting on an airplane after 911.All of our personal effects go through the x-ray machine while each and every person is scanned with a wand. I have heard stories from guards one the types of spy devices people have used to get info out, things simmilar to the coke cans...I have also heard of idiots stuffing processors in their bumm bumm and other cavity type places.

Another security concern, apparently, are some remote car starters. Some communicate two-way with the key chain, making it verboten in secure areas.

Cue up the clip from "The Jerk" where the cans are being shot by the sniper!

"It's the cans! He hates these cans!"
