A question about the David Lean Collection

What do you suppose the chances are that the MGM versions of Oliver Twist and Great Expectations will be superior to the Criterion versions? I love David Lean's work, and I'm actually looking foward to watching In Which We Serve.

I allow for the possibility that MGM's editions might be superior, but I'm hedging my bets: I've only pre-ordered the four MGM Lean titles that Criterion and Image haven't already released: This Happy Breed, In Which We Serve, The Passionate Friends and Madeleine.

I'll wait and read a few reviews after the other discs are released: if the consensus is that Oliver Twist, Great Expectations, Brief Encounter and Blithe Spirit are significant improvements over their previous releases, I'll pick them up then, but not before.

If the price is right, I might just get the collection.

Blithe Spirit certainly needs to be restored.

Without question.

I was just going to post this same question... How do the current Criterion transfers hold up? Can anyone offer any insight into the transfers and condition of available elements, etc?

I much prefer the cover art on the new MGM discs, especially to Oliver Twist, but it's the video that has me concerned. If MGM would be able to match or possibly even surpass Criterion's transfers, than I'd be more than anxious to cross both titles off my list from Criterion and run out to grab those MGM releases...

Any speculations, or will we have to wait and see?

I've a hunch that these will be transfers courtesy of Carlton; MGM have licensed Carlton transfers before (The Ghoul). But as I say, it's just a hunch.

Criterion's disks of Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist

look just fine.

Blithe Spirit isn't a Criterion.

By the way, where's Hobson's Choice? a particular favorite of mine.

BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER (1952) with Ann Todd (Lean's wife at the time) and Ralph Richardson is also a terrific picture and has not been represented on any US homevideo format before. Does anyone have info on the postponement/cancellation/delay?

Time for you chaps to buy multi-region players:

Hobson's Choice / The Sound Barrier
