Zenith DVB 318 & LG 7832 DVD Player merged thread - Page 20

OK, I had another sync. issue. Eric Clapton Live in Hyde park DVD. Could it be the Zenith or the amp? They are both new. The issue corrected itself after I hit stop. weird. Amp is pioneer 1014. Maybe it just doesn't like the zenith?
with my old settup, JVC player and Pioneer Elite 05 amp, I NEVER had a sync issue.
I have read of issues with the 1014 and various sources and sync issues.

Really hard to say. I have had to hit stop and then play a few times over the last year or so.

I just got a Panny 42PX50U Plasma and connected my Zenith 318 via component to it. I am getting a horizontal screen shift to the left when using 720p or 1080i and their is a 1/2" gap on the right hand side of the plasma because of this. If I use composite or component at 480p, I do not get the shift but the pic suffers considerably. 480p component also has some visible scanning in all of the lines in the black bar area on top and bottom of 2.35:1 dvd. Have not tried DVI yet as I need an HDMI adapter.

Previously was using component 1080i out on the Zenith to a Sanyo 32744 HD CRT without any problem.

Has anyone experienced this horizontal shift and is their a remedy?
Any other true HD sources to display on the Plasma?
Could be an issue of sorts with the Plasma display.
I tried a Samsung HD850 upconverting DVD player over HDMI and it does not exhibit any horizontal shift with the Pannie. Will try component when I get a chance, but I really believe it's a Zenith issue. I've seen some front projector users complain about screen shift. Anyone else see this problem on the Zenith?
Using HDMI, there have been reports. Maybe it happens on Component also, and CRT overscan masks it???

Also a little odd that 480p and 1080i would be positioned different, while it's 480p sucks, I have not noticed any position change between the two on my CRT RP.

One other interesting note... If this sort of thing happens in the LCD Computer Montior World, you have a button called Auto, which will always center the video right up, it seems this would be a usefull feature for fixed pixel HDTV displays as well.

I personally will be returning my Zenith 318. I installed the old firmware, but I get wavy lines on all movies when trying to play the 1080i over component and it's unbearable to watch. I have a Denon 3802 receiver and a Samsung DLP 4677 tv which is 780p I believe.

I also get a lot of audio sync problems with this player, but I had similar audio problems with the Samsung HD850.

I'm not an expert on any of this, but just can't seem to get any of these upconverting players to work well with my setup.

I'm thinking about the Oppo upconverting player that people are talking about over at avs, but don't know if it will freeze up when I connect the dvi output to the hdmi input on my dlp. I ran into that problem with the Zenith.
I am having major audio sync. problems too. About 1 out of every 4 discs... And if I switch audio tracks during a film, forget about it....

My old JVC player which had way better color and black levels (12 bit Video D/A converter) but not better sharpness of course might come out of retirement.

I have the OPPO. It does not have HDCP, so it will play on any display, whether the display is HDCP compliant or not.

I have a 318, and it would lock up with my Infocus 4805 over DVI. The OPPO works great.

One quick question as I am on my way out to buy the LG. Is the firmware fix that you download the same for both players, as I have only seen a ling a few posts back for the 318.
Ryan, the firmware is the same for both the LG and Zenith players as both are identical in all respects save for branding.
I assumed that it was, knowing that both players were identical.

Well, I'll start working on setting up and doing the firmware fix. Oh the fun begins.
Now I have a question. I am fiddling with this player and in "stop mode" (I will call it) when I hit the upconversion button I can toggle between 480p, 720p, and 1080i.

The build date is July 2004. Before I do the firmware fix. Is this correct. Should I be able to toggle to 1080i without the firmware, or is it doing that but actually outputting 480p.

I am guessing that with the new firmware you can still upconvert to 1080i but many dvd's will not function properly due tot he copy protection....correct?

Just want to make sure before I load in the old firmware.
Yes, generally it will fall back to 480p with or without your knowledge on Copy Prot. DVD's.

I hope this get read, I have an emergency where as I just got my DVI/HDMI Cable from Blue Jean Cable and I hooked up the 318 and everything froze up. I didn't even get a picture on the t.v. via HDMI. Am I missing somethihg here. I unplug it and it's still frozen, however when I unplug the DVI cable and put in S-video everything is fine. I even unplugged the DVI cable and place back the component cables and still plays fine. What's the deal here if anyone knows.
This has been cropping up and not just with the Zenith...

I know some people have had success, changing the adapter arrangement around, which doesn't help you with your cable situation.

The DVI to HDMI and visa versa thing is not turning out to be as fool proof as at least I thought anyways.

Also, there is a firmware revision, that is said to be for DVI users which may also help some.
Thanks for the response, I noticed that when I hook up the cable Zenith sent with the unit DVI end, everything appears to work fine except I can't hook it up to the t.v. I think I will pick up the adapter from monster cable just to see and of course if it doesn't work, then I'll have to stick with component. I love the picture but as stated in AVS and Secrets, DVI was suppose to be the best picture.
yeah, I have read and talked to people that have had to go DVI cable with HDMI adapter, and also people that had to do HDMI cable with DVI adapter. It seems to be at least somewhat display dependent.
Well I give up, no sense in pursuing this any further. I emailed Blue Jean Cables with the hope of exchanging the DVI/HDMI cable for some of their well known component cable of equal value. I love the picture and hope the component cable from Blue Jean will give me even a better picture. I'll save the HDMI for HD-DVD or Blue Ray which ever comes first.

I have read enough now, to know if DVI or HDMI was my goal, I think I'd choose a different player.

As a matter of fact, I tell people unless your goal is 1080i via component go with other players period.

Absolutely. The only reason to fool with the 318 is the component output. I have this and a S97, and the S97 is much better (HDMI output).

I do wonder something (if anyone knows) about the 318:
If I place it in 720p or 1080i and place it in 4:3 downconvert mode... does the DCI chip use the full "anamorphic resolution" squeezed into the "downconverted" image or does it simply upsample the downconverted image?

Silly question I guess, just wondering which came first, the cart or the horse.

I agree and disagree. The HDMI/dvi output on some players such as the S97 may be better, but is it that much better to warrant the price difference.

Here in Ontario, the S97 has been and has never lowered from 399 CAD (325US). But the LG player is currently sitting at
149 CAD - futureshop- (121US).

I mean if price is not an option, then go for the S97. I have a Toshiba 51H84 which has HDMI. I would love to use HDMI, but I don't have an extra 200 dollars to put down on a different player for the sake of using HDMI and possible a slightly better picture.

After reading this thread I looked on Best Buys website to purchase the Zenith player and I saw this LG model on there for the same price -- LDA-511

Anyone know anything about this player? Is this the new version of the LG 7832?

The physical buttons on the front of my Zenith DVB318 stopped working this past week. Even the power on/off and disc eject/load buttons do not work.

The remote control can still control the unit.

As a result, I can no longer control the upconversion feature. At least the upconversion is stuck in the 1080i mode which is the one one I want to use anyway since the native resolution on my TV set is 1080i.

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting my buttons to work again?

Thanks,

RonaldS

Have you tried unplugging the unit, waiting 10 seconds and plugging it back in?
How about re-installing the firmware??

That is what I would try. Of course the risk is that it doesn't do anything except change the resolution back to 480 and the buttons still won't work. This player is only good at 1080i so be warned but I would try this in any event.

Thank you for the suggestions. When I get up the courage later, I will try the unplug and replug.

I just have to be ready for the risk of losing the 1080i and the functionality of the buttons. I will post the results when I try it.

Have you contacted Zenith/LG?
Thank you!

I tried unplugging and replugging the unit and all the buttons are working again.

By the way, when the unit powered up, it was still in 1080i mode. The upconversion button is working and I took it through the 480p, 720p and 1080i modes again.

Thank you for your help.
