Joe,

Make sure you rename the file to lgromout.bin or else it won't work.

I've also purchased a Zenith 318 and intend to flash the firmware to enable 1080i via componet. Please explain the "renaming" of the bin file and the steps involved in flashing the firmware. Thanks.

EDIT: Found all the info on the keohi site.

Thanks Robert, that will definitely help

John - The place I got it from was techforless out of CO Springs. The cool part is I ordered it yesterday shipped UPS and it arrived at my house at noon today! Pretty much they ship it up to Commerce City and instead of travelling to another hub, it ships out to delivery in Denver the next morning. Instant overnight without paying for it, how cool is that?

I'll be messing with it tonight, I'll let you know how it goes John. If you ever want to see the difference (if ther is one), you are welcome to check it out sometime. Wife and I don't mind visitors who bring pizza - hehe.

Hi,

To scale my DVDs I use an SDI modified Panny rp82 and the HOLO3D PCI card vid scaler from Immersive. I scale to 1080i on my Tosh 65H80. If you have visited the HT section of www.keohi.com site and read comments that ISF'r Michael TLV made last summer about A/Bing the LG player, (Zenith's twin) with a scaled image from component, it was my setup that was used and I witnessed the comparison.

It was done relatively quickly because Michael had a plane to catch but the PQ that I saw makes either player a bargain. My setup is is much more complex and is really much more valuable to those using a front projector as the scaler can create any rez and size that any display unit can handle. It also scales any 480i input from composite component, s'vid and sdi, and is therefore more costly as in the $1300.00US area, but for straight PQ to 1080i,(my set doesn't do 720p) the results were very similar.

As far a firmware or any other kinds of modifications I have no idea, but right out of the box it was pretty damn good.

I have just glanced through this thread. I am now confused. Do these players NOT convert copyrighted material to 1080i or do they?

Also,
Does the Zenith pass the blacker than black signal?
Has anybody had any reliability problems with the Zenith?
If I'm not mistaken, it will pass blacker than black. Mine has upconverted everything I've thrown at it via component and DVI. I believe there the firmware upgrade though disables certain DVD's from upconverting via component outputs. Drop me a PM if you are interested in one as I am selling mine.
The Zenith is very good. But only very good at 1080i out on the component video. You need to replace the firmare loaded on the player on more recent builds, to avoid this getting blocked on copy protected material.

No reliability problems yet. Only a year on it though.
Thanks John
A year is fine with me. Hopefully by then the Blu-Ray vs HD-
DVD fight will be nearly over. I am not sure how to change the firmware. I only have a CD burner. Can I download the files, burn them to a CD, pop it into the drive and then sit back? Is that how to change the firmware?
I'm not sure if it has to be a DVD ROM or not really.

I bought mine early on, I have not had to do the firmare upgrade. But lots and lots of people on various HT and Audio / Visual internet forums have done it.
I did it using a cd-rom (I also only have a cd burner) and it worked just fine.

Just download the file, rename it lgromout.bin and write it to a cd. Then pop it in a sit back.

This is a really nice player, been enjoying it the past week. Considering the picture I get via component (1080i) at $165 shipped, really it is a steal.

We watched a few movies over the last week:

LOTR RotK EE
Under the Tuscan Sun
I Heart Huckabees
Equilibrium

Even on titles I wouldn't expect much improvement, there is a noticably better picture (like Under the Tuscan Sun.) My wife even notices it and approves of the new picture. I need to crack out that old import version of Hero and really see how nice this can look

For anyone on the fences, I say try one out. Upgrading (downgrading?) the firmware is a snap, took me all of 10 mins to complete. Now it runs like a charm via component no problem.

Thanks again all...
Joe I agree. I am using the DVB 318 with my Panny l300u and the difference in quality is remarkable. I attached some pics I took in each mode. You can see the difference at 1080i.

DVB 318 sample screen shots 480, 720, and 1080
post #523 of 614
Chet, at first I couldn't tell much of a difference so I copied your screen shots and blew up the images about 200% larger. The 1080i is defintely better!

So, Joe, where can I get one of these bad boys for $165???? Thanks.
My upgrade also went without any problem. DL the upgrade firmware, change the name, pop it into the player and 'JOILA...... works like a charm. Not any problems whatsoever.
We have noticed some movies show very little, if any, quality difference and some do. Hotel Rwanda is a very clean and clear pic to start with and looks even better upscaled.
I got my 318 from electronics express, which was linked through amazon.com..... for 149.00.....162.00 after shipping. Great player and plays anything I've put in it..........
Starting watching Daredevil using the Zenith upscale to 1080i via Component, and the up close shots of Ben Affleck is just simply remarkable. True HD no and we know that, but I tell you the next best thing (IMHO) to HD on DVD until the real deal comes out. Give Daredevil a run through you would be pleased. Wow, I paid 200 for mine that's a great deal for 162.00. Also if you like Star Wars Clone Wars the animated saga, you'll love it upscaled, the picture is just simply so clean, clear and the colors just jump out at you.
On my LG, 480p does look pretty bad. But I bought this player for the 1080i ouput and the picture is so much better at the resolution. Running through the DVI output BTW.
Just read through this whole thread... took a while!

I've noticed that all those who want this player to upconvert using component flash to the old firmware. I haven't noticed anyone mention this though: with the newest firmware, has the picture quality for DVI output at 1080i been improved? That is, the white crush, and any other issues that may have popped up? How is it, honestly, in comparison to the component with old firmware? Would I notice a difference on a small (~30") CRT HDTV?

Drew, Not HD but in my mind about as good as you can get with DVD (at least with my projector). I am very pleased with the player. The firmware update was easy and quick.
Could someone PLEASE tell me if you can flash to the old firmware so you can still upconvert over component.

And where can I get the software.

THANKS!!!
Johnny, I assume you are referring to the DVB318 firmware.

firmware link allowing upconvert output via component
post #531 of 614
Awesome. Well that answers my question. Now I love that fact that you can just dl software for these things.

Thanks
For anyone still interested in the DVB 318, bestbuy.com just put this on sale (either today or yesterday).
....if 5% off constitutes a "sale" (doesn't even cover sales tax here in CA!)
Yeah, I was hope'n for like some blockbuster $135 price or something. $170 on sale, there are cheaper sources out there than that. But hey 5% is still 5% and $170.00 isn't a bad price at all on it really.

To all:

I just got my Zenith 318 and hooked it up via the optical link to my Marantz SR5300 home theater system. I enabled the DTS bitstream but get either high pitched squeel or low freq thumping/drone on every availble Marantz surround mode. I switched to coax and the problem gets quite infrequent (once per movie). When I turn off bitstream it works fine but I don't get the 5:1 advantage.

HELP!!!
And another DVD player works just fine???

Man, I have yet to see an issue with digital audio with any of the 318's I have helped out with.
Tim, I don't know if it will matter but on the 318 you can set the bitstream sampling rate to either 48khz or 96 khz. If you have it set to 96 then perhaps 48 might help.
FYI-A lil tip to anyone that has one of these, turn OFF the AUTOSTART feature and save yourself some grief as this is a known issue on these units and can cause lockups on certain discs like National Treasure, but its the player and NOT the disc.
Has not happened to me. Interesting. I was thinking of getting that disc for this weekend.
I've tried 48 and 96K sampling rates. I also swapped 318's with the vendor.
